  • In this paper, we propose a new indoor location estimation method which combines the fingerprint technique with the propagation prediction model. The wireless LAN (WLAN) access points (APs) deployed indoors are divided into public APs and private APs. While the fingerprint method can be easily used to public APs usually installed in fixed location, it is difficult to apply the fingerprint scheme to private APs whose location can be freely changed. In the proposed approach, the accuracy of user location estimation is improved by simultaneously utilizing public and private APs. Specifically, the fingerprint method is used to the received signals from public APs and the propagation prediction model is employed to the signals from private APs. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of conventional indoor location estimation schemes through measurements and numerical simulations in WLAN environments.

  • TMA (Target Motion Analysis) in passive sonar is generally conducted with the bearing only or the bearing frequency. In order to conduct TMA fast and accurately, it is essential to estimate a initial target maneuver precisely. The accuracy of TMA can be improved by using SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) information and acoustic propagation model additionally. This method assumes that the radiated noise level of the target is known, but the accuracy of TMA can be degraded due to a mismatch between the assumed radiated noise level and the actual radiated noise level. In this paper, TMA with the acoustic propagation model, bearing measurements, and SNR information is conducted in the ocean environment of South Korea (East Sea/ Yellow Sea/ South Sea). And the performance analysis of TMA for the mismatch in the radiated noise is presented.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model based on the finite element method was built to simulate the wave propagation phenomena that occur during the ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD) process. First, longitudinal-wave TOFD was simulated, and the numerical results agreed well with the theoretical results. Shear-wave TOFD was also investigated because shear waves have higher intensity and resolution. The shear wave propagation was studied using three models with different boundary conditions, and the tip-diffracted shear-to-longitudinal wave was extracted from the A-scan signal difference between the cracked and non-cracked specimens. This signal showed very good agreement between the geometrical and numerical arrival times. The results of this study not only provide better understanding of the diffraction phenomena in TOFD, but also prove the potential of shear-wave TOFD for practical application.

  • This paper proposes the design of the model following control system using the PID control structure. PID control system became model following control by inserting new pre-compensator in order to improve control performance in discrete-time region. Gain of the PID controller needs to be readjusted when response of system changes due to disturbance or load fluctuation. Performance of control system improves by joining neural network to PID control system because performance of control system depends largely on each PID gain in PID control system. And the games of the PID controller in the proposed control system are automatically adjusted by back-propagation algorithm of the neural network. Angular position of DC servo motor is selected as a plant in order to verify control performance in model following control. After it is applied to the position control system, it's performance is verified through computer experiment.

  • Results of the numerical simulation and experimental data analysis for identification of mode cutoff frequency and estimation of sound speed of seabed from the spectrum of acoustic signal received at fixed source-receiver range are presented. Model simulations for Pekeris waveguide show that the frequency-dependent propagation loss and interference pattern are closely related to mode cutoff frequencies and it could be possible to the identify them from the changes of interference pattern. The concept considered at numerical simulations is applied to signals acquired at sea test. Cutoff frequency and sound speed of seabed are estimated from the interference pattern of measured signal. Propagation loss predicted using the estimated sound speed of seabed as model input parameter shows similar estimation result compared to propagation loss derived from measured data.

  • Fatigue life and crack retardation behavior after penetration were experimentally examined using surface pre-cracked specimens of aluminium alloy 5083. The Wheeler model retardation parameter was used successfully to predict crack growth behavior after penetration. By using a crack propagation rule, the change in crack shape after penetration can be evaluated quantitatively. Advanced, waveform-based acoustic emission (AE) techniques have been successfully used to evaluate signal characteristics obtained form fatigue crack propagation and penetratin behavior in 6061 aluminum plate with surface crack under fatigue stress. Surface defects in the structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue crack growth, which may cause serious failure of the whole structure. The nondestructive analysis on the crack growth and penetration from these defects may, therefore, be one of the most important subjects on the reliability of the leak before break (LBB) design. The goal of the present study is to determine if different sources of the AE could be identified by characteristics of the waveforms produced from the crack growth and penetration. AE signals detected in four stages were found to have different signal per stage. With analysis of waveform and power spectrum in 6061 aluminum alloys with a surface crack, it is found to be capabilities on real-time monitoring for the crack propagation and penetration behavior of various damages and defects in structural members.

  • This paper compares various propagation models developed by several researchers with the measurements in Korea. The models we have considered are Okumura model, Longley-Rice model, ITU-R model and Lee model. The measured signal is vertically IXllarized E -field transmitted from Mt. Namsan at 320MHz. According to the result, Okumura model shows the best performance for the overall test IXlints, and ITU-R model has a good performance as Okumura model for receiving points above lOkm from the transmitter.

  • In order to accomplish a wireless communication of capsule endoscopy, an environment study in the human body and receiving antenna design have been performed. The proposed antenna is the loop antenna designed to minimize the propagation loss in multi-loss layer such as the human body and utilize the magnetic field. Considering the propagation loss in the human body, the frequency range is from 400 MHz to 500 MHz. Acorrrding to the FCC regulations, the permittivity and conductivity for each human tissue were extracted. We set up an equivalent model and make an aqueous solution which is replaced with the human body. Due to movement of capsule in the human body which propagation loss is extremly severe, an array antenna is required. Irrespective of the location of transmission antenna transmitting a signal of 1 mW, we confirme what it is possible for the enough signal detection as the average signal level of array antenna is -60 dBm.

  • We propose a neuron model that is possible to learn three-dimensional movement. The neuron model by imitating structure of a neuron, has the system resemble a neuron. We considered a neuron system based on the arguments, and wished to examine whether the system had reasonable function. Koch, Poggio and Torre believed that inhibition signal would shunt excitation signal on the dendrites. They believed that excitation signal operated input-signals and inhibition did as delayed ones. Thus, they were sure that function for directional selectivity was arisen by the shunting. Koch's concept is so important; therefore, we construct the neuron system with their concept. The neuron system makes the shunting function; thus, the model may have a function for directional selectivity. We initialized the connections and the dendrites by random data, and trained them by the back-propagation algorithm for three-dimensional movement. We made sure the defection of three-dimensional movement in the system.
