Imaging Diagnosis of Central Giant Cell Granuloma Showing Massive Osteoid Material (다량의 골양물질을 형성한 중심성 거대세포육아종의 영상진단)

  • A 19-year-old man was referred to Seoul National University Dental Hospital for evaluation of a large painless swelling of the left mandibular angle area in August, 1999. The growth had been first noted 6 years ago. He had visited other hospital in 1997. In spite of the treatment given at the hospital, the mass continued to grow rapidly. Conventional radiographs in 1999 showed an expansile, lobulated, and destructive lesion of the left mandibular body. CT scan demonstrated an expansile mass with a corticated margin. Bony septa were seen within the lesion. Internal calcification noted on the bone-setting CT image, and corresponded to the hypointense area in T1-weighted MRI image. MRI clearly delineated the extent of the lesion which had heterogenous intermediate signal intensity in T1-weighted images and heterogenous hyperintense signal intensity in T2-weighted images. The lesion was well-enhanced. Histopathologically, the lesion was well demarcated. Multinucleated giant cells were presented in a fibrous background, demonstrating a storiform pattern. Areas of osteoid rimmed by a few osteoblasts were scattered throughout the lesion. Inflammatory cells, blood vessels, and hemosiderin deposition were also shown. CGCG may show lots of internal calcification foci on the CT, and varied signal intensity in MRI. More cases will be needed to understand the features of the CT & MR finding of CGCG.

A CASE REPORT OF ANEURYSMAL BONE CYST OF THE MANDIBULAR CONDYLE (하악과두에 발생한 동맥류성골낭)

  • The aneurysmal bone cyst is a nonmalignant reactive bone lesion. Developing rarely in the craniofacial region, and more commonly affecting the long bones and the spine, the lesion has variable etiopathogenic characteristics. The authors diagnosed a 33-year-old female as aneurysmal bone cyst after undergoing clinical, radiological and histological examinations. The characteristics were as followed: 1. The patient complained of pain and swelling of the right preauricular area. 2. The conventional radiograms showed a relatively well defined radiolucent lesion with partially scalloping margin. The cortical bone of the right condyle was thinned and expanded by the lesion. 3. Bone scintigraphy with ~c demonstrated ring-like or doughnut-pattern accumulation of radioactivity. 4. On Tl-weighted imaging of MRI, the lesion on the right condyle had middle signal intensity. T2-weighted MRI demonstrated multiple high signal intensities seperated by septa which had low signal intensity. Finger in balloon appearance was seen. 5. Histologically, the lesion was composed of large sinusoidal blood spaces lined by fibroblasts and histiocytes. Its fibrous stroma consisted of fibroblstic element, multinucleated giant cells, extravasated erythrocytes and focal hemosiderin pigmentation. New bone formation was also observed around larger sinusoidal spaces.

MRI Findings of Neuro-Behcet's Disease (신경베체트병의 자기공명영상소견)

  • MR findings in nine patients(three female, six male) with neuro-Behcet's disease were retrospectively analyzed. NeuroBehcet's disease was diagnosed on the basis of typical clinical symptoms. Involved site, pattern, signal intensity, and contrast enhancement pattern on MRI were evaluated. In addition, follow up MR imaging was performed in four patients. The midbrain(7/9), internal capsule(7/9), pons(6/9), thalamus(6/9), basal ganglia (5/9), middle cerebella peduncle(4/9), medulla oblongata(2/9), and subcortical white matter(2/9) are involved on MRI. The size of lesions was 1cm to 3cm and their margin was ill-defined and patchy. Inhomogeneous high signal intensity on the T2-weighted images and low signal intensity on T1-weighted images was seen respectively. In four of nine cases, there was focal enhancement. On follow up MR imaging, improvement or recurrance of the lesions was found. Also in two cases of follow up cases, there was artophy in brainstem and(or) middle cerebellar peduncles. In conclusion, MR imaging with systemic clinical symptoms is useful for diagnosing neuro-Behcet's disease.

Design of a Correlator and an Access-code Generator for Bluetooth Baseband (블루투스 기저대역을 위한 상관기와 액세스 코드 생성 모듈의 설계)

  • We describe the design for a correlator and an access code generator in bluetooth system. These are used for a connection setting, a packet decision and a clock synchronization between Bluetooth units. The correlator consists of two blocks; carry save adder based on Wallace tree and threshold-value decision block. It determines on an useful packet and clock-synchronization for input signal of 1.0Mbps through the sliding-window correlating. The access-code generator also consists of two blocks; BCH(Bose-Chadhuri-Hocquenghem) cyclic encoder and control block. It generates the access-codes according to four steps' generation process based on Bluetooth standard. In order to solve synchronization problem, we make use of any memory as a pseudo random sequence. The proposed correlator and access-code generator were coded with VHDL. An FPGA Implementation of these modules and the simulation results are proved by Xilinx chip. The critical delay and correlative margin based on synthesis show the 4.689ns and the allowable correlation-error up to 7-bit.

A 0.13-㎛ Zero-IF CMOS RF Receiver for LTE-Advanced Systems

  • This paper presents a zero-IF CMOS RF receiver, which supports three channel bandwidths of 5/10/40MHz for LTE-Advanced systems. The receiver operates at IMT-band of 2,500 to 2,690MHz. The simulated noise figure of the overall receiver is 1.6 dB at 7MHz (7.5 dB at 7.5 kHz). The receiver is composed of two parts: an RF front-end and a baseband circuit. In the RF front-end, a RF input signal is amplified by a low noise amplifier and $G_m$ with configurable gain steps (41/35/29/23 dB) with optimized noise and linearity performances for a wide dynamic range. The proposed baseband circuit provides a -1 dB cutoff frequency of up to 40MHz using a proposed wideband OP-amp, which has a phase margin of $77^{\circ}$ and an unit-gain bandwidth of 2.04 GHz. The proposed zero-IF CMOS RF receiver has been implemented in $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology and consumes 116 (for high gain mode)/106 (for low gain mode) mA from a 1.2 V supply voltage. The measurement of a fabricated chip for a 10-MHz 3G LTE input signal with 16-QAM shows more than 8.3 dB of minimum signal-to-noise ratio, while receiving the input channel power from -88 to -12 dBm.

The Change of Adjacent Segment and Sagittal Balance after Thoracolumbar Spine Surgery

  • Objective : To characterize perioperative biomechanical changes after thoracic spine surgery. Methods : Fifty-eight patients underwent spinal instrumented fusions and simple laminectomies on the thoracolumbar spine from April 2003 to October 2008. Patients were allocated to three groups; namely, the laminectomy without fusion group (group I, n = 17), the thoracolumbar fusion group (group II, n = 27), and the thoracic spine fusion group (group III, n = 14). Sagittal (ADS) and coronal (ADC) angles for adjacent segments were measured from two disc spaces above lesions at the upper margins, to two disc spaces below lesions at the lower margins. Sagittal (TLS) and coronal (TLC) angles of the thoracolumbar junction were measured from the lower margin of the 11th thoracic vertebra body to the upper margin of the 2nd lumbar vertebra body on plane radiographs. Adjacent segment disc heights and disc signal changes were determined using simple spinal examinations and by magnetic resonance imaging. Clinical outcome indices were determined using a visual analog scale. Results : The three groups demonstrated statistically significant differences in terms of angle changes by ANOVA (p<0.05). All angles in group I showed significantly smaller angles changes than in groups II and III by Turkey's multiple comparison analysis. Coronal Cobb's angles of the thoracolumbar spine (TLC) were not significantly different in the three groups. Conclusion : Postoperative sagittal balance is expected to change in the adjacent and thoracolumbar areas after thoracic spine fusion. However, its prevalence seems to be higher when the thoracolumbar spine is included in instrumented fusion.

Useful MRI Features for Distinguishing Benign Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors and Myxoid Tumors in the Musculoskeletal System

  • Purpose: To identify the differential MRI findings between myxoid tumors and benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (BPNSTs) in the musculoskeletal system. Materials and Methods: The study participants included a total of 35 consecutive patients who underwent MRI between September 2011 and December 2013. The patients were pathologically diagnosed with myxoid tumors (22 patients) or BPNSTs (13 patients). Evaluation was done by two radiologists, based on the following characteristics: size, margin, degree of signal intensity (SI) on T2-weighted images (T2WI), homogeneity of SI on T2WI, enhancement pattern, enhancement homogeneity, presence of cystic portion, internal fat component, presence of fat split sign, presence of target sign, presence of continuation with adjacent neurovascular bundle, and presence of surrounding halo. Results: Large size, high SI on T2WI, heterogeneous enhancement, and internal fat component were commonly observed in myxoid tumors, while homogenous enhancement, fat split sign, target sign were common in BPNSTs. The differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Other findings, such as margin, homogeneity of SI on T2WI, enhancement pattern (peripheral or solid), internal cystic portion, continuation with neurovascular bundle, and surrounding halo, did not show significant difference between myxoid tumors and BPNSTs (P > 0.05). Conclusion: In the differential diagnosis of myxoid tumors and BPNSTs involving the musculoskeletal system, several MRI findings such as degree of SI on T2WI, enhancement homogeneity, internal fat component, fat split sign, and target sign, may be helpful in establishing the diagnosis.

  • This paper describes a 12.5 Gb/s low-power receiver design with equalizer adaptation. The receiver adapts to channel and chip process variation by adaptation circuit using sampler and serializer. The adaptation principle is explained. It describes technique receiving ground referenced differential signal of voltage-mode transmitter for low-power. The CTLE(Continuous Time Linear Equalizer) having 17.6 dB peaking gain to remove long tail ISI caused channel with -21 dB attenuation. The voltage margin is 210 mV and the timing margin is 0.75 UI in eye diagram. The receiver consumes 0.87 mW/Gb/s low power in 45 nm CMOS technology.

${\mu}$BGA and ${\mu}$Spring Packages for Rambus DRAM Applications and Their Electrical Characteristics (Rambus DRAM실장용 ${mu}!$BGA (Ball Grid Array) 및 ${mu}!$Spring 패키지와 전기적 특성)

  • This paper presents the structure of a $\mu$Spring package, its fabrication process and an analysis of its electrical characteristics compared to that of a $\mu$BGA. It was found that both $\mu$BGA and $\mu$Spring packages provide with outstanding high speed signal transmission characteristics due to their lower inductance of package interconnection lines, smaller than half of inductance of TSOP package lines. Even the worst case substrate trace of a Rambus DRAM $\mu$Spring package yields the line inductance of 2.9nH, which provides with 25% margin compared to the Rambus DRAM specification of 4nH. The fabrication cost of $\mu$Spring package is lower than that of $\mu$BGA by 50%, passes 1000 thermal cycles, meets JEDEC Level 1 specification whereas $\mu$BGA does not, and thereby yields high reliability and strong competing power.

  • Multi-Platform Image and Intelligence Common data link(MPI-CDL) systems are designed to transmit the imaginary and signal intelligence data at an aeronautical to ground line of sight(LOS) link. This paper proposes a method to predict a link availability and analyzes the required link margin to satisfy a given link availability for MPI-CDL systems. To estimate a link availability the proposed method applies the conditional probability so that both a rain attenuation and a multipath fading are considered simultaneously. Link margins to meet the link availability for MPI-CDL systems are calculated according to an operating environment including frequencies, flight altitudes and transmission ranges. The required link margins for actual unmanned air vehicle systems are also given by simulation results.
