  • Acoustic Emission(AE) technique has been applied to not only material characterization evaluation but also on-line monitoring of the structural integrity. The AE source location technique is very important to identify the source, such as crack, leak detection. Since the AE waveforms obtained from sensors are very difficult to distinguish the defect signals, therefore, it is necessary to consider the signal analysis of the transient wave-form. In this study, we have divided the region of interest into a set finite elements, and calculated the arrival time differences between sensors by using the velocities at every degree from 0 to 90. A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission in fiberboard plates has been studied by introducing Wavelet Transform(WT) do-noising technique. WT is a powerful tool for processing transient signals with temporally varying spectra. If the WT de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the errors of source location in fiberboard plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved.

  • In spite of the difficulties and uncertain characteristic of cable driven method, surgical robot instrument has adopted it as driving mechanism for various reasons. To overcome the problem of cable system, previous research applied SMCSPO (sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer) algorithm as robust controller to control the instrument and found that the value of SPO (sliding perturbation observer) followed force disturbance, reaction force loaded on the tip very similarly. Thus, this paper confirms that the perturbation observer is sufficient estimator which finds out the mount of loaded force on the surgical robot instrument. To prove the proposition, simulation using the similar model with an actual instrument and experimental evaluation are performed. The results show that it is possible to substitute SPO for sensors to measure the reaction force. This estimated reaction force will be used to realize haptic function by sending the reaction force to a master device for a surgeon. The results will contribute to create surgical benefit such as shortening the practice time of a surgeon and giving haptic information to surgeon by using it as haptic signal to protect an organ by making force boundary.

  • In this study, the feasibility of magnetic resonance techniques for nondestructive internal quality evaluation of Korean red ginseng was examined. Relaxation time constants were measured using various grades of red ginsengs. Solid state magnetic resonance imaging technique was applied to image dried red ginsengs which have low moisture contents (about 13%). A 7 tesla magnetic resonance imaging system operating at a proton resonant frequency of 300 ㎒ was used for acquiring MR images of dried Korean red ginseng. The comparison test of cross cut digital images and magnetic resonance images of heaven grade, good grade with cavity inside, and good grade with white part inside red ginseng suggested the feasibility of the internal quality evaluation of Korean red ginsengs using MRI techniques. A good grade red ginseng included abnormal tissues such as cavities or white parts inside was observed by the signal intensity of MR image based on magnetic resonance properties of proton nucleus. Analysis on an one dimensional profile of acquired MR image of Korean red ginseng showed easy discrimination of normal and abnormal tissues. MR techniques suggested ways to detect internal defects of red ginsengs effectively.

  • Motion-compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) techniques in video signal processing have many application areas. Frame rate up-conversion (FRUC) or distributed video coding (DVC) technique needs an effective MCFI algorithm. For these applications, it is necessary to develop an effective post-processing technique to improve visual qualities or to reduce virtual channel noises, resulting in the reduced channel bit rate. This paper proposes a reliability evaluation method based on spatio-temporal characteristics for motion-compensated interpolated blocks. The proposed algorithm investigates the temporal matching characteristics for current frame and then is designed in such a way that it can measure temporal characteristics as well as the spatial ones. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional temporal matching method.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a real-time soil moisture meter using RF impedance. The impedance suchas capacitance and resistance (or conductance) was analyzed using parallel cylinder type capacitance probe(C-probe) and Q-meter (HP4342). The capacitance and conductance of soil increased as volumetric water content increased. The 5 MHz of modified Colpitts type crystal oscillator was designed to detect the capacitance change of the C-probe with moist soil. A third order polynomial regression model was proposed to describe the relationship between RF impedance and volumetric water content. The prototype real time moisture meter consisted of the C-probe, sample container, oscillator, frequency counter and related signal processing units. The calibration equation for measurement of volumetric moisture content of soil was developed and validated. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error between measured volumetric water content by oven method and predicted values by prototype moisture meter for unknown soil samples were 0.984 and 0.032$cm^3$$cm\^3$, respectively.

  • Cardiac arrest is owing to the failure of the heart that makes the blood circulation stop. Arrested blood circulation prevents the supply of the oxygen and the glucose and it results the loss of consciousness and, finally, brain death. Many public institution installed the AED for emergency treatment, but, it is not efficient when the patient is alone. In this paper, we made multiplexed wearable device for cardiac arrest detection. With this device, we measure the individual's electrocardiography, heart sound and motion. If the cardiac arrest is detected, the device make a warning horn and transmit the signal for defibrillation. We obtain 98.33% of ECG data, 94.5% of PCG data and 98.38% of IMU data accuracy for each evaluation and 93.33% accuracy for integrated evaluation.

  • Whitening agents are eagerly demanded especially by oriental women who often suffers from the pigmentary disorders such as melasma and solar lentigines. As these pigmentary disorders are exacerbated by ultraviolet (UV), the whitening agents could exert its effect not only by inhibiting melanin synthesis but also by inhibiting UV activated signals. Eumelanin protects UV-induced DNA damages so that the chemicals which could reduce UV-induced DNA damages might be the ideal lightening agents. The effect of newly synthesized antioxidants, a-tocopheryl ferulate, on protective effect for UV-induced DNA damages as well as inhibiting melanin synthesis are briefly shown. For clinical evaluation, our results of the efficacy of lightening agents on treating pigment macules in combination with chemical peeling are shown. Furthermore, newly developed facial image analyzers to quantitatively evaluate the improvement of pigment macules are introduced.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is an active microwave instrument that performs high-resolution observation under almost all weather conditions. Although there are many advantages of SAR instrument, many complicated steps are involved in order to generate SAR image products. Many research and algorithms have been proposed to process radar signal and to increase the quality of SAR products. However, it is hard to find research which compare the quality of SAR products generated with different algorithms and processing methods. In our previous research, a SAR processing s/w was developed for a ground station. In addition, quality assessment procedures and their test parameters inside a SAR processor was proposed. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the quality of SAR images generated from the developed SAR processing s/w. However, If there are no direct measurements such as radar reflector or scattering field measurement values it is difficult to compare SAR images generated with different methods. An alternative procedures and parameters for SAR image quality evaluation are presented and the problems involved in the comparison methods are discussed. Experiments based on real data have been conducted to evaluate and analyze quality of SAR images.

  • The Electro-optical camera subsystem as a payload of a satellite system consists of OM (optical module) and CEU(camera electronics unit), and most performances of the camera subsystem depend a lot on the CEU in which TDI CCDs(Time Delayed Integration Charge Coupled Device) take the main role of imaging by converting the light intensity into measurable voltage signal. Therefore it is required to specify and design the CEU very carefully at the early stage of development with overall specifications, design considerations, calibration definition, test methods for key performance parameters. This paper describes the overview of CEU development. It lists key requirement characteristics of CEU hardware and design considerations. It also describes what kinds of calibration are required for the CEU and defines the test and evaluation conditions in verifying requirement specifications of the CEU, which are used during acceptance test, considering the fact that CEU performance results change a lot depending on test and evaluation conditions such as operational line rate, TDI level, and light intensity level, so on.

  • This study was performed to evaluate sleep efficiencies and conditions for comfortable sleep based on the analysis of sleep efficiency and MST under four thermals conditions ($22^{\circ}C,\;24^{\circ}C,\;26^{\circ}C,\;30^{\circ}C$). Five female subjects who have similar life cycle and sleep patterns were participated for the sleep experiment. Their age was from 20 to 22 years old. They were healthy, and had regular sleep with consistent bed and wakeup time. It was checked whether they had a good sleep before the night of experiment. Experiments were performed in an environmental chamber using thermo-hygrostat. The physiological signal (EEG) for sleep stage were obtained from C3-A2 and C4-Al electrode sites. Sleep stages were classified, then SWS latency and SWS/TST were calculated for the evaluation for sleep efficiencies on thermal conditions. As results, mean skin temperature for comfort sleeping was $34.5{\sim}35.4^{\circ}C$. Considering sleep efficiency and mean skin temperature, indoor room temperature of upper limit was $28.1^{\circ}C$.
