  • Sidewall curl is the curvature that results from non-uniform through-thickness strain present in the sheet stamping process which involves material flow over a die radius. In order to understand and control sidewall curl for tight fit-up tolerances, an analytical model that can provide a reliable measure for the amount of curl would be very helpful. In this study, a model is developed based on the moment-curvature relationship during bending-under-tension operations. The analytical model includes the variables of applied tensile force, the yield strength, the elastic modulus, the bending radius, and the sheet thickness, which are the primary factors affecting sidewall curl during sheet stamping operations. For the accuracy of analytical model, six possible deformation patterns are proposed on the basis of material properties and bending geometries.

In this study, a model is developed based on the moment-curvature relationship during bending-under-tension operations. For the verification of analytical model, sidewall curl is experimentally measured after deformation of a strip using a bending-under-tension test system. The results show a consistent relationship between the theoretically predicted value and the experimentally obtained one, especially in regions of high curl.

프론트 사이드 멤버의 비틀림 저감을 위한 성형공정 설계 (Forming process design for the twist reduction of an automotive front side member)

  • Increasing needs for light weight and high safety in modern automobiles induced the wide application of high strength steels in automotive body structures- The main difficulty in the forming of sheet metal parts with high strength steel is the large amount of springback including sidewall curl and twist in channel shaped member parts- Among these shape defects, twist occurs frequently and requires numerous reworks on the dies to compensate the shape deviation- But until now, it seems to be no effective method to reduce the twist in the forming processes- In this study, a new forming process to reduce the twist deformation during the forming of automotive structural member was suggested- This method consists of forming and restriking of embosses on the sidewall around the stretch flanging area of the part- and was applied in the forming process design of an automotive front side inner member with high strength steel- To evaluate the effectiveness of the method, springback analysis using $Pamstampa^{tm}$ was done- Through the analysis results, the suggested method was proven to be effective in twist reduction of channel shaped parts with stretch flanging area.

  • The springback characteristics of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet was investigated in OSU draw/bend test. Springback is the elastically-driven change of shape of a part after forming and it should be estimated and controlled to manufacture more precise products in sheet forming. The demands are increasing for magnesium alloy sheet press forming, but the study on its springback characteristics is insufficient. Strip draw/bend tests were conducted with various conditions - die radius, sheet thickness and controlled tensile force. The springback angles were measured from 'sidewall curl' of deformed shape. The tendency of springback angle was observed from the tests.
