  • In this paper, an analytical method and a difference approximation method to calculate the gradient of an objective function have been applied to the directivity optimization in an adaptive ultrasonic transducer which is combined with a point source array and an optimization algorithm (DFP method). To compare these two methods, quasi-ideal .beam with a beam width and direction specified are chosen as the desired directivity. As the numerical results, the difference approximation method shows better suppressive capacity of side lobe level, good stability in the convergence processing, faster convergence speed and excellent adaptability compared with the analytical method.

  • Purpose: This study investigated maxillary third molars and their relation to the maxillary sinus using panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) Materials and Methods: A total of 395 maxillary third molars in 234 patients were examined using panoramic radiographs and CBCT images. We examined the eruption level of the maxillary third molars, the available retromolar space, the angulation, the relationship to the second molars, the number of roots, and the relationship between the roots and the sinus. Results: Females had a higher frequency of maxillary third molars with occlusal planes apical to the cervical line of the second molar (Level C) than males. All third molars with insufficient retromolar space were Level C. The most common angulation was vertical, followed by buccoangular. Almost all of the Level C molars were in contact with the roots of the second molar. Erupted teeth most commonly had three roots, and completely impacted teeth most commonly had one root. The superimposition of one third of the root and the sinus floor was most commonly associated with the sinus floor being located on the buccal side of the root. Conclusion: Eruption levels were differently distributed according to gender. A statistically significant association was found between the eruption level and the available retromolar space. When panoramic radiographs showed a superimposition of the roots and the sinus floor, expansion of the sinus to the buccal side of the root was generally observed in CBCT images.

  • Using conventional textile techniques such as weaving braiding knitting and stitching it is possible to produce a wide range two and three dimensional fiber preforms, however so far only a limited attention has been given to knitted fabrics in composite industry. This is mainly due to the opinion that knitted fabric reinforced composites posses low mechanical properties owing to their looped fiber architecture. But it is possible to obtain desired mechanical properties by selecting proper knitted fabric structure, In this paper mechanical characteristics of kevlar plain weft knitted fabrics reinforced plastics(KFRP) are evaluated for th development of intrusion beam of car side door. Tensile bending impact properties of KFRP are measured experimentally and crush demands of Americal Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.214(FMVSS 214) compared with the bending load and displacement of KFRP by quasi-static test method. The applicability and limitation of bending load and displacement of KFRP according to specimen size has been discussed.

  • We have developed a 270-W 15-kHz MOPA system based on side-pumped rod-type Nd:YAG gain modules. The master oscillator is a 3-W 15-kHz $TEM_{00}$ $Nd:YVO_4$ laser with a pulse duration of 30 ns. To preserve the high beam quality during the amplification, we use image relay and polarization rotation which can simultaneously compensate for thermal lensing and thermal birefringence generated in the rod-type gain modules. After the amplification to 270 W with six rod-type gain modules, the beam quality factor ($M^2$) of the amplified laser beam is 5-10, and the pulse duration is maintained at 30 ns.

  • In this paper, a performance analysis of waveguide broad-wall slot array antenna for millimeter-wave seeker in Ka-band was performed as using near-field measurement. The measurement of slot array antenna was conducted in both far-field and near-field. And the validation of near-field test in millimeter band was confirmed. It was confirmed that the beam pattern characteristics including beam width and side lobe level of the slot array antenna that performed the verification were the same. Differenced in the side lobe level of azimuth and elevation beam pattern were verified to be less than 1dB. Additionally, the new antenna aperture distribution was extracted as using back-projection method modifying the near-field data and then introduced the method conducting performance analysis of array antenna.

  • In laser imaging, accurate extraction of the laser's center is essential. Several methods exist to extract the laser's center in an image, such as the geometric mean, the parabolic curve fitting, and the Gaussian curve fitting, etc. The Gaussian curve fitting is the most suitable because it is based on the physical properties of the laser. The width of the Gaussian laser beam depends on the distance from the laser source to the target object. It is assumed in general that the distance remains constant at a laser spot resulting in a symmetric Gaussian model for the laser image. However, on a curved surface of the object, the distance is not constant; The laser beam is narrower on the side closer to the focal point of the laser light and wider on the side closer to the laser source, which causes the distribution of the laser beam to skew. This study presents a modified Gaussian model in the laser imaging to incorporate the slant angle of a curved object. The proposed method is verified with simulation and experiments.

  • Buried pipelines can be classified as continuous and segmented pipelines. These infrastructures can be damaged either by ground movement or by seismic wave propagation during an earthquake. Permanent ground deformations (PGD) include surface faulting, liquefaction-induced lateral spreading and landslide. Liquefaction is a major problem for both superstructures and infrastructures. Buyukcekmece lake zone, which is the studied region in this paper, is a liquefaction prone area located near the North Anatolian Fault Line. It is an active fault line in Turkey and a major earthquake with a magnitude of around 7.5 is expected in this investigated region in Istanbul. It is planned to be constructed a new 12" steel natural gas pipeline from one side of the lake to the other side. In this study, this case has been examined in terms of two different support conditions. Firstly, it has been defined as a beam in liquefied soil and has built-in supports at both ends. In the other approach, this case has been modeled as a beam in liquefied soil and has vertical elastic pinned supports at both ends. These models have been examined and some solution proposals have been produced according to the obtained results. In this study, based on this sample, it is aimed to determine the behaviors of buried continuous pipelines subject to liquefaction effects in terms of buoyancy.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the shear wall location in rigid frames on the dynamic behavior of a roof structure due to vertical and horizontal earthquake motions. The study deals with a gabled long span beam supported by two story rigid frames with shear walls. The earthquake response analysis is carried out to study the responses of the roof: vibration mode, natural period, bending moment and horizontal shear force of the bearings. The study results in the following conclusions: First, a large horizontal stiffness difference between the side frames is caused by the shear wall location, which results in a large vertical vibration of the roof and a large shear force at the side bearings. Second, in this case, the seismic design method for ordinary buildings is not useful in determining the distribution of the static equivalent loads for the seismic design of this kind of long span structures.

  • Wheel bearing units were almost exclusively used for car front wheel, where the two ball rows are directly side by side with integrated rubber seal. The seal is of important for wheel bearing units due to the adverse environmental conditions with mud and splash water. The seal of wheel bearing units was designed to have geometry with multi lips, which elastic lip contacts and deforms with bearing. The equation of reaction force for deformed lip as cantilever beam was previously used for seal lip design. But it's result was not useful because deflection of the beam differs from lip's. In this study, deformed shape of the lip was assumed to and order function which is more similar to lip deformation and made the equation for reaction force prediction. The Reaction forces from each other equations were compared with results by FEA to prove usefulness of new equation.

  • A 54-year-old male patient presented for a periodic check-up at the dental clinic. A panoramic radiograph showed bilateral ossification of the stylohyoid ligament with an oval radiopacity on the right side. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined, homogenous hyperdense entity from the lower third of the ossified stylohyoid ligament on the right side. The differential diagnosis of osteoma on the stylohyoid chain includes Eagle syndrome and benign tumors of the stylohyoid chain and adjacent structures. Osteoma rarely manifests in the neck. Even more infrequent are tumors originating from the stylohyoid chain, with only a single documented case of osteoma reported in the literature in 1993. Due to the asymptomatic status, no surgical intervention was advised, and the case would be monitored periodically. This case report describes the details of an osteoma that emerged from the stylohyoid chain, marking it as the second recorded occurrence of this highly rare condition.
