  • The influence of solidification condition on the segregation of SiC particles in the $Al-xSi/6wt%SiC_p$(x: 6, 10, 14, 18${\cdot}$wt%) composites was investigated in the study. The results are as follows: 1) During the counter-gravity unidirectional solidification of $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composites melt, most of the SiC particles are pushed to the top of the casting. 2) The SiC particles pushing in the $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composite melts are not observed, when the interface velocity of melts increases more than 1.41 ${\mu}m/sec$. 3) The SiC particles are entrapped in the interdendrite regions, when the sizes of SiC particles in the $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composites are large than ${\varphi}22{\mu}m$.

  • The microstructure and the mechanical properties of RS-SiC and RS-$SiC_f/SiC$ materials have been investigated in conjunction with the content of residual silicon and porosity. The mechanical properties of RS-SiC materials suffered from the thermal exposure were also examined. RS-SiC based materials bave been fabricated using the complex matrix slurry with different composition ratios of SiC and C panicles. The characterization of RS-SiC based materials was investigated by means of SEM, EDS ~d three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, the high temperature applicability of RS-SiC based materials was discussed.

  • Strength characteristics of $Si_3N_4$ composite ceramics has been studied as functions of heat-treatment temperature and additive $SiO_2$. $SiO_2$ colloidal could significantly increase the bending strength. Crack healing temperature decreased 300 K by additive $TiO_2$. Bending strength of specimen added $SiO_2$ is higher than that of non-added $SiO_2$. Moreover, bending strength of specimen with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating is much higher that of non-coated specimen. In in-situ observation, crack-healed specimen at 1,573 K shows phenomenon like a fog on the surface. By SPM, both crack-healed specimen, non-coating and coating of $SiO_2$ colloidal, at 1,273 K were healed completely but both of 1,573 K exist crack. This was made by evaporation of $SiO_2$ at high temperature. Crack-healing materials of $Si_3N_4$ composite ceramics is crystallized $Y_2Si_2O_7$, $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ and $SiO_2$. A large amount of Si and O, and little C were detected by EPMA. Si and O increase but C decreases according to heat treatment temperature. Specimens with additive $SiO_2$ were more detected Si and O than that of non-additive $SiO_2$. Specimen with $SiO_2$ colloidal coatings were much more detected O.

  • A noble technique has been developed for fabricating in situ formed $TiC_p/Al$ composites. In this process, fairly stable TiC particles were in situ synthesized in liquid aluminum by the interfacial reaction between an Al-Ti melt and SiC, which is a comparatively unstable carbide from the view-point of thermodynamics. It is possible in the present process to generate TiC particles of nearly 1 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, even utilizing SiC of 14 ${\mu}m$ as raw material. However, the dispersion behavior of TiC particles in the matrix depends on the size of the raw material SiC. Decomposing finer SiC makes the dispersion of TiC particles more uniform and the mechanical properties of composites are improved accordingly. The structure of in situ composites and their mechanical properties are affected by the fabrication temperature and the stirring time. It has been found that the most suitable condition for fabrication should be applied depending on the size of the raw material, even if the same kinds of carbide are used. Furthermore, although Al-Ti-Si system intermetallic compounds are detected in a $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite which is fabricated by conventional melt-stirrng method, these compounds can not be observed in a $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite made by this in situ production method. Hence the mechanical properties of the in situ $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite are superior to those of the conventional $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composites.

  • Experimental samples were produced with mullite and cordierite powders with SiC. Effects of temperature, atmosphere and additive on the composite properties were investigated by XRD, STA and PSA methods. Results show that samples containing calcinate cordierite and calcinate mullite with SiC baked in air atmosphere have not suitable properties at the temperature range of $1380-1450^{\circ}C$ due to SiC intensive oxidation, while argon atmosphere decrease SiC oxidation. Using $Bi_2O_3$ as the additive, cordierite phase formation and prevention from SiC oxidation at low temperatures were achieved, leading to the improvement of physical and mechanical properties

  • Ti-silicide was deposited by sputtering the composite target($TiSi_{2.6}$) on single-Si wafers and oxide on them. The heat treatment temperatures by rapid thermal annealing(RTA) have been varied in the range of $600-850^{\circ}C$ for 20seconds. It was not until RTA temperature was $800^{\circ}C$ that a stable $TiSi_2$ was formed, and the value of resistivity of that phase was $27~29{\mu}{\Omega}-cm$, which seems a little higher than that formed by the reactive method. The result of x-ray diffraction peals showed that till $750^{\circ}C$, C49 $TiSi_2$ phase was dominant, but at $800^{\circ}C$, at last, the phase was transformed into a stable C54 $TiSi_2$ phase. And, the result of x-ray photoeletron spectroscopy(XPS) measurements showed that the composition ratio of Ti and Si was 2 1 in the case of specimens treated at $800^{\circ}C$, The surface roughness of $TiSi_2$, which was condidered a weak point, was improved to a superior value of $17{\pm}1nm$, therefore increasing the possibility of applying $TiSi_2$ to semiconductor devices.

  • In order to elucidate the extrusion characteristics of $SiC_{p}$/6061 Al composite, defomation resistance, $K_{w}$ was determined using the empirical formula suggested by Watanabe et al, and also extrusion pressure was measured using the extrusion press with a capacity of 350 ton. The $K_{w}$ which are propotional to extrudability, was increased with increasing volume fraction of reinforcement, $SiC_{p}$, but decreased with increasing the particle size. The peaks of maximum extrusion pressure in curves of extrusion force vs ram stroke were changed sharply with decreasing the particle size. The elevated extrustion temperature resulted in the decreased $K_{w}$ and extrusion pressure, but caused the surface tearing of extrusion composite bars. The results showed that extrudability of the composite billets is depend on the extrusion conditions as well as the characteristics of reinforcement, $SiC_{p}$.

  • A small diameter of SiC fiber mat can produce much higher heat under microwave irradiation than the other types of SiC materials. Fabrication of high strength SiC fiber consists of iodine vapor curing on polycarbosilane precursor and heat treatment process. The curing stage of polycarbosilane fiber was maintained at $150-200^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum condition under the iodine vapor to fabricate a high thermal radiation SiC fiber. The structure and morphology of the fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In this study, the thermal properties of SiC fiber mats under microwave have been analyzed with an IR thermal camera and its image analyzer. The prepared SiC fiber mats radiated high temperature with extremely high heating rate up to $1100^{\circ}C$ in 30 seconds. The fabricated SiC fiber mats were not oxidized after the heat radiation process under the microwave irradiation.
