Dynamic modeling of LD converter processes

  • Because of the important role LD converters play in the production of high quality steel, various dynamic models have been attempted in the past by many researchers not only to understand the complex chemical reactions that take place in the converter process but also to assist the converter operation itself using computers. And yet no single dynamic model was found to be completely satisfactory because of the complexity involved with the process. The process indeed involves dynamic energy and mass balances at high temperatures accompanied by complex chemical reactions and transport phenomena in the molten state. In the present study, a mathematical model describing the dynamic behavior of LD converter process has been developed. The dynamic model describes the time behavior of the temperature and the concentrations of chemical species in the hot metal bath and slag. The analysis was greatly facilitated by dividing the entire process into three zones according to the physical boundaries and reaction mechanisms. These three zones were hot metal (zone 1), slag (zone 2) and emulsion (zone 3) zones. The removal rate of Si, C, Mn and P and the rate of Fe oxidation in the hot metal bath, and the change of composition in the slag were obtained as functions of time, operating conditions and kinetic parameters. The temperature behavior in the metal bath and the slag was also obtained by considering the heat transfer between the mixing and the slag zones and the heat generated from chemical reactions involving oxygen blowing. To identify the unknown parameters in the equations and simulate the dynamic model, Hooke and Jeeves parttern search and Runge-Kutta integration algorithm were used. By testing and fitting the model with the data obtained from the operation of POSCO #2 steelmaking plant, the dynamic model was able to predict the characteristics of the main components in the LD converter. A Study on Design Automation of Cooling Channels in Hot Form Press Die Based on CATIA CAD System (CATIA CAD 시스템 기반 핫폼금형의 냉각수로 설계 자동화에 관한 연구)

  • This paper focuses on the development of a support system that can rapidly generate the design data of a hot-form die with cooling channels, commonly known as hot stamping technology. We propose a new process for designing hot-form dies based on our (automated) system, whose main features are derived from the analysis of the design requirements and design process in the current industry. Our design support system consists of two modules, which allow for the generation of a 3D geometry model and its 2D drawings. The module for 3D modeling automation is implemented as a type of CATIA template model based on CATIA V5 Knowledgeware. This module automatically creates a 3D model of a hot-form die, including the cooling channels, that depends on the shape of the forming surface and the number of STEELs (subsets of die product) and cooling channels. It also allows for both the editing of the positions and orientations of the cooling channels and testing for the purpose of satisfying the constraints on the distance between the forming surface and cooling channels. Another module for the auto-generation of the 2D drawings is being developed as a plug-in using CAA (CATIA SDK) and Visual C++. Our system was evaluated using the S/W test based on a user defined scenario. As a result, it was shown that it can generate a 3D model of a hot form die and its 2D drawings with hole tables about 29 times faster than the conventional manual method without any design errors.

Computational estimation of the earthquake response for fibre reinforced concrete rectangular columns

  • Due to the impressive flexural performance, enhanced compressive strength and more constrained crack propagation, Fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) have been widely employed in the construction application. Majority of experimental studies have focused on the seismic behavior of FRC columns. Based on the valid experimental data obtained from the previous studies, the current study has evaluated the seismic response and compressive strength of FRC rectangular columns while following hybrid metaheuristic techniques. Due to the non-linearity of seismic data, Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) has been incorporated with metaheuristic algorithms. 317 different datasets from FRC column tests has been applied as one database in order to determine the most influential factor on the ultimate strengths of FRC rectangular columns subjected to the simulated seismic loading. ANFIS has been used with the incorporation of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic algorithm (GA). For the analysis of the attained results, Extreme learning machine (ELM) as an authentic prediction method has been concurrently used. The variable selection procedure is to choose the most dominant parameters affecting the ultimate strengths of FRC rectangular columns subjected to simulated seismic loading. Accordingly, the results have shown that ANFIS-PSO has successfully predicted the seismic lateral load with R2 = 0.857 and 0.902 for the test and train phase, respectively, nominated as the lateral load prediction estimator. On the other hand, in case of compressive strength prediction, ELM is to predict the compressive strength with R2 = 0.657 and 0.862 for test and train phase, respectively. The results have shown that the seismic lateral force trend is more predictable than the compressive strength of FRC rectangular columns, in which the best results belong to the lateral force prediction. Compressive strength prediction has illustrated a significant deviation above 40 Mpa which could be related to the considerable non-linearity and possible empirical shortcomings. Finally, employing ANFIS-GA and ANFIS-PSO techniques to evaluate the seismic response of FRC are a promising reliable approach to be replaced for high cost and time-consuming experimental tests.

Evaluation of friction of esthetic brackets according to different bracket-wire angulations (심미 브라켓의 종류와 브라켓-호선 각도에 따른 마찰 저항에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the friction that occurs during the sliding movement of the archwire through esthetic brackets is differently affected by bracket materials, slot designs, and tip angulations of the archwire. Methods: Eight types of brackets with 0.018 inch slots (composite: Brillant (BR); composite with metal slot: Spirit MB (SP); ceramic: Inspire (IN), Signature (SI), Cristaline V (CR); ceramic with metal slot: Clarity (CL), Luxi II (LU); and metal bracket: Integra (IT)), and placed into groups of 20 brackets in each group, were tested in artificial saliva with 0.018 inch stainless steel wire. The wire tip angulations were given as 0, 4 and 8 degrees. Results: CR group significantly showed the lowest frictional force with all wire tip angulations of 0,4, and 8 degrees. IN significantly showed the highest frictional force (p < 0.001). BR (polyoxymethylene) had significantly less frictional force than SP (polycarbonate) (p < 0.001) and showed no significant difference between metal brackets. Friction was increased as the wire tip angulations were increased, but no notches were observed on any parts of the archwire. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, esthetic brackets are superior or similar to 55 brackets from a frictional point of view.

Study on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded duplex stainless steel (마찰교반접합된 이상 스테인리스강의 미세조직 및 기계적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • 마찰교반접합법은 특정한 회전수로 회전하는 용접 툴을 이용하여 접합하고자 하는 피접합재의 맞댄면에 삽입시킨 후 툴을 이동시키거나 혹은 시편을 견고하게 고정시킨 장치(backing plate)가 움직여 고상 상태에서 접합이 이루어진다. 알루미늄, 마그네슘 등 비교적 융점이 낮은 저융점 재료의 재료에 처음 적용이 되어 많은 연구가 활발히 진행되었고 타 용접방법에 비해 우수한 접합특성을 나타내었다. 최근 이러한 마찰교반접합은 이러한 저융점 재료를 넘어서 스틸, 타이타늄, 니켈 등과 같은 고융점 재료 등에 대한 적용이 늘어나고 있다. 마찰교반접합을 이용하여 이러한 고융점 재료의 접합 경우 내마모성 및 내열성 등의 내구성이 갖추어진 툴과 이러한 툴을 냉각시킬 수 있는 냉각 장치 등이 필요로 하나 경제적 측면이나 접합부의 우수한 특성 등을 고려 할 때 그 적용 및 발전 가능성이 매우 높다고 볼 수 있다. 2상 스테인레스 강은 금속 조직적으로 페라이트와 오스테나이트 상이 거의 1:1의 동등한 비율로 매우 미세하게 결합된 구조를 가지고 있다. 또한 이상 스테인레스 강은 각상의 개개의 특성에 기인하여 염소 분위기에서 응력부식 저항성이 우수하고, 공식과 틈부식에 대한 저항성이 매우 뛰어나다. 그리고 이상 스테인레스 강은 비교적 고가인 Ni이 일반 오스테나이트 스테인리스 강의 약 1/2의 수준으로 적게 포함이 되어 경제적인 이점을 지니고 있으며 또한 용접성이 좋아 산업계의 수요는 현재 점차 증가하고 있는 상황이다. 하지만 이러한 이상 스테인리스 강은 용접 후 페라이트 상의 조대화, 그리고 페라이트 상의 분율이 오스테나이트 상의 분율보다 높아지게 되어 용접부에서의 저온 인성 감소 및 내식성 저하 등의 문제가 발생하게 된다. 그리하여 용접 시 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해서는 입열량의 조절이 가장 필요로 하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 마찰교반용접을 이용하여 두께 3mm의 대표적인 이상 스테인리스 강인 SAF2205 스테인리스 강에 대해 맞대기 마찰교반접합을 실시하였다. 툴 회전속도를 변수로 하여 접합을 실시하였으며 접합 시 툴은 $Si_3N_4$ 툴을 사용하였다. 접합 후 외관상태 점검, 미세조직 관찰, 경도 및 인장강도 측정 등의 실험을 실시하였고, 이러한 결과를 이용하여 미세조직과 기계적 특성과의 관련성을 조사하였다.

미세금형 가공을 위한 전기화학식각공정의 유한요소 해석 및 실험 결과 비교

  • To fabricate a metal mold for injection molding, hot-embossing and imprinting process, mechanical machining, electro discharge machining (EDM), electrochemical machining (ECM), laser process and wet etching ($FeCl_3$ process) have been widely used. However it is hard to get precise structure with these processes. Electrochemical etching has been also employed to fabricate a micro structure in metal mold. A through mask electrochemical micro machining (TMEMM) is one of the electrochemical etching processes which can obtain finely precise structure. In this process, many parameters such as current density, process time, temperature of electrolyte and distance between electrodes should be controlled. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the result because it has low reliability and reproducibility. To improve it, we investigated this process numerically and experimentally. To search the relation between processing parameters and the results, we used finite element simulation and the commercial finite element method (FEM) software ANSYS was used to analyze the electric field. In this study, it was supposed that the anodic dissolution process is predicted depending on the current density which is one of major parameters with finite element method. In experiment, we used stainless steel (SS304) substrate with various sized square and circular array patterns as an anode and copper (Cu) plate as a cathode. A mixture of $H_2SO_4$, $H_3PO_4$ and DIW was used as an electrolyte. After electrochemical etching process, we compared the results of experiment and simulation. As a result, we got the current distribution in the electrolyte and line profile of current density of the patterns from simulation. And etching profile and surface morphologies were characterized by 3D-profiler(${\mu}$-surf, Nanofocus, Germany) and FE-SEM(S-4800, Hitachi, Japan) measurement. From comparison of these data, it was confirmed that current distribution and line profile of the patterns from simulation are similar to surface morphology and etching profile of the sample from the process, respectively. Then we concluded that current density is more concentrated at the edge of pattern and the depth of etched area is proportional to current density.

  • The Pd-Ni-Ag alloy composite membrane using modified porous stainless steel (PSS) as a substrate was prepared by a electroless plating technique. In this work, we have introduced the intermediate layer between Pd-based alloy and a metal substrate. As an intermediate layer, the mixtures of nickel powder and inorganic sol such as $SiO_{2}$ sol, $Al_{2}O_{3}$ sol, and $TiO_{2}$ sol were used. The intermediate layers were coated onto a PSS substrate according to various membrane preparation conditions and then $N_{2}$ fluxes through the membranes with different intermediate layers were measured. The surface morphology of the intermediate layer in the mixture of nickel powder and inorganic sol was analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Finally, the Pd-Ni-Ag alloy composite membrane using the support coated with the mixture of nickel powder and silica as an intermediate layer was fabricated and then the gas permeances for $H_{2}$ and $N_{2}$ through the Pd-based membrane were investigated. The selectivity of $H_2/N_2$ was infinite and the $H_{2}$ flux was $1.39{\times}10^{-2}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$ at the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and trans-membrane pressure difference of 1 bar.

Adsorption Characteristics of Three-components Volatile Organic Compounds on Activated Carbonaceous Adsorbents (탄소흡착제에 의한 삼성분계 휘발성 유기화합물의 흡착특성)

  • Toluene of aromatic compounds, MEK of ketones and IPA of alcohols were extremely used as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) on the getting into step with industrial process. The adsorption characteristics of three component solvent vapors (Toluene-MEK-IPA) on the activated carbonaceous adsorbents such as AC, ACF and AC+ACF were investigated in a stainless steel fixed bed adsorption experimental apparatus in order to identify those carbons for eliminating and recovering solvent vapors from industrial emission sources. The used activated carbonaceous adsorbents were pelletized commercial activated carbon and activated carbon fiber. The breakthrough curves and adsorption capacity have been obtained at atmospheric pressure in a adsorption fixed bed. It has been found that non-polar and larger molecules have been adsorbed better than polar and smaller molecules. Especially, alcohols and ketones were poorly adsorbed due to competitive adsorbability in ternary mixture system. However, it could be overcome by employment of activated carbonaceous adsorbent which have different porosity distribution appropriately.

  • With the goal of eradicating overwork, overload, and speeding of general freight cars(cargo) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Infrastructure and Transport, the "The Fare of safe transportation for freight cars System" has been enforced since 2020. 'The Fare of safe transportation for freight cars' rate for each item is being applied and supplemented, but the 'The Cost of safe transportation for freight cars' of general freight cars (cargo) and steel items is under discussion. The purpose of this study was to estimate the willingness to pay( WTP) for cargo. A survey was conducted on shippers, transportation companies (arrangers, carriers), and cargo drivers (using direct questioning among contingent valuation method (CVM) and the Tobit Regression analysis was conducted, and the average and median values of freight rates were derived using the estimated results, and the willingness to pay by tonnage of freight cars was confirmed. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as a reference to the "The Fare of safe transportation for freight cars Committee" an organization for deliberation and resolution of the 'The Cost of safe transportation for freight cars'.

A Study on the Fundamental Properties of Mortar Mixed with Converter Slag and Ferronickel Slag (전로슬래그 및 페로니켈슬래그를 혼입한 모르타르의 기초물성 연구)

  • Converter steel slag(BOF slag) is a vast amount of solid waste generated in the steelmaking process which has very low utilization rate in Korea. Due to the presence of free CaO which can derive bad volume stability in BOF slag, it usually land filled. For recycling BOF and identify its applicability as fine aggregate, this study investigates the fundamental characteristics of mortar with cement replaced ferronickel slag(FNS), which has the potential to be used as a binder. The results suggest that the mineral phases of BOF slag mainly include larnite(CaSiO4), mayenite(Ca12Al14O33) and wuestite(FeO) while olivine crystallines are shown in FNS. The results of flow and setting time reveals that the flowability and process of hardening increased when the amount of FNS and BOF slag incorporated was increased. The length change shows that the amount of change in the length of the mortar was almost constant regardless of mix proportion while compressive strength was reduced. Micro structure test results revealed that FNS or/and BOF slag mix took a long time to react in the cement matrix to form a complete hydration products. To achieve the efficient utilization of B OF slag as construction materials, proper replacement rate is necessary.
