Evolution, Transformation, and Representation in Buddhist Architecture - The Square Shrines of Buddhist Monasteries in Central Asia after the Fourth Century

  • This study notices that all religions in Central Asia from the fourth century through seventh century C.E. provided considerable hands in keeping a uniform unity through a process of assimilation, although art and architecture were greatly stimulated by the creative genius of the many people. The study thus intends to argue that the common ideas of rituals and primitive forms of religious shrines lead the square-based layout of Buddhist shrines the unity and universality in the architectural products of particular regions or epochs: i.e. the "square-based plan" in Buddhist temples of Central Asia was a significant prototype in the synthesis with pre-Buddhist architectural models and Buddhist universal ideas. Thus, this thesis notes that they did not lose the universal principles of the Buddhist shrine plans due to ritual functions, and even there have been never differences from pre-Buddhist building models remarked by the periods and the venues in which they were produced, although there had been continuous evolutions and adaptive transformations in the local tastes of religious architecture. Accordingly, this study discusses how such plans in Buddhist architecture had been consistently produced within that regional style also representative of the local idioms of architecture, and how they were adopted in the sites, founded on the composition of ritual functions. The foreign architectural cultures were selectively chosen getting along with local building types of each site according to each taste for architecture as a result.

  • This paper proposed CHELS-App that Smart-phone APP optimized cultural heritage experiential learning is configured can learning and sightseeing at the same time with experience the cultural heritage and enjoying the mission through quests to take advantage of the Smart-phone. CHELS-App is provide a guide maps by using the location-based service and cultural commentary(commentary, photos, quizzes, games, cartoon) with capability of event push about the Jongmyo Shrine as world heritage, and configured with capability of experience diary create and foot stamp through these experiences.

A Case Study on the Wedding Culture of the Main Family in the Gyeongbuk Area (경북지역 종가의 혼례문화 사례연구)

  • This study surveyed features of weddings in the main family by selecting 10 families in which the grandnephew and grandnephew's wife dwell in the head house, have a shrine, and hold a memorial service for Bulcheonwi (不遷位). A case survey through in-depth interview was carried out from April 9, to October 8, 2011. It surveyed the contents and the wedding artifacts in Uihon (議婚), Napchae (納采), Nappye (納幣), Daerye (大禮), Hyeongugorye (見舅姑禮), which are the procedures of traditional wedding that have been kept in the wedding ceremony of the main family. As a result, in deciding on marriage, the marriage was formed on the basis of similar Gagyeok (家格) and on ancestor's common scholastic mantle or origin. As for wedding furnishings, wedding presents, and wedding gifts, 9 out of 10 families were indicated to give and take weakly. Also, 6 out of 10 families held a traditional wedding ceremony in the yard of the bride's house. Hyeongugorye (見舅姑禮) was indicated to be held by all of the 10 families. A continuous effort in academic circles and industries is demanded for preserving the living culture of the main family, which proceeds with following the traditional elements even amid a rapidly-changing historical flow as today.

Recognition of Japan politics about Dokdo and our strategy (일본 정치권의 독도인식과 우리의 대응전략)

  • Last December, the Abe government came back, and it is critical core of Northeast Asia. They visited to Yasukuni Shrine, denied to Korea's invasion and they are denying all of their invasion history. I'm afraid they want to take Dokdo. Dokdo is Korean territory, but Japan politics assert it belongs to them. To make matters worse, they are waiting an opportunity to invade. Ministry of Foreign Affair blue paper and Ministry of Defense white paper have claimed Dokdo as Japanese territory, and many right wing politicians are taking part in the Cabinet. Liberal Democratic Party of Japan is becoming more right wing politicians than before by Japan Restoration Party, and the others also have more right wing ideologies. It can't control Japan right wing political parties. They finally aim to take Dokdo. In this situation, we have to defend Dokdo. Japan must be very important partner for our nation's development. But it is necessary to trust between two countries. Dokdo is effective controlled by Korea. It is the best way how to keep Dokdo. During Dokdo is effective controlled by Korea, the Japanese Government has limited Dokdo's ownership. Now we don't have any way to keep Dokdo except more effective control. We have strategies about Japanese claim of Dokdo's ownership as follows. First, we can overpower Japan right wing politics as Japan conscientious force's ideology. Second, Japan politics say to Dokdo's ownership is based on The San Francisco Treaty. But it is not right. Third, we have to exchange a lot of local government and civic society in Japan. Finally, we must prepare thoroughly to bring the matter to the International Court of Justice.

  • Phaya-Thon-Zu temple has a unique architectural style connected by the three temples, and cultural values are highly as murals remain on some of the walls. However, various damages in internal walls and vaults have occurred due to earthquake and environmental influences. In order to analyze these damages, accurate structural analysis is required, but structural modeling is difficult, because Phaya-Thon-Zu temple is the complex masonry structure which is stacked with small bricks. Therefore, this study intends to analyze the causes of damages by examining collapse mechanism for cross section and longitudinal section of vaults in the entrance hall and shrine by using thrust line analysis, which is a geometric method, and to compare it with the actual damage situation.

A study on the revival of learning policy of Kwang-Hae-Kun (광해군조의 문예진흥 정책)

  • During his reign, Kwang-Hae-Kun has done various works to promote literature and book acquisition. Among those works is the establishment of a special office called 'Tok Seo Dang' as he was enthroned in 1608, though it was demolished in 1622. And 'Seo Chuk Kyo In To Kam' was built to recover the scattered and lost books. He encouraged the people to collect and publish books by rewarding those who were engaged in a sort of library works. Their primary responsibility was to collect rare and essential resources, seek the material even in China and publish them using metal printing type. They even sought the diaries and newsletters which the individuals kept at their house. The collected materials were first copied and then kept in 'Shilok' shrine. Among the imported books are Dae Myung Hoi Chon, Chon Choo Sa Chon, Tong Kam Chan Yo, Du Si Tong Chon, Ok Hae, Mun Seon, Hak Hae, Lim Geo Man Rok and some were without titles. Majority of the compiled materials were medical books and geographies like Shin Cheung Tong Kak Yeu Chi Seung Ram, Tong Eui Po Kam, etc. Because of this strenuous effort, they were able to collect and retrieve lots of books and materials between 1608 and 1623. Majority of the published books were of Confucianism(13) which were followed by Political and Legal items(5), Historical documents(3), literature (3), etc. Regarding our library history, one should never forget Kwang-Hae-Kun's significant and remarkable contribution to it.

External Space Characteristics of the Seowon -A case Study of Sangju Area- (서원의 외부공간 특성 -상주지방의 사례연구-)

  • The research deals with external space Seowon(lecture hall) dedicated to education and memorial rises in Sangju area of Choson Dynasty. Characteristics of Seowon as follow; 1. Seowon of Sangju area were built from the middle of 17C to the beginning of 18C. Ideological background of building functioning were grafted into the belief in the three God governing Childbirth, the theory of feng-shui(wind-and water-magic) which is in close connection with the principles of yin and yang, and confucianism and the philosophy of lao-tze and chung-tze. The formation of space were horizontally arrangement and vertical arrangement as the first-learning and then-ancestor shrine of Youngnam provinces. 2. Background and factors of site selection were applied geographical feature, tried to connect owner home town. 3. The shape of path of flow were simple of vertical and curved composition, were continued, were stabilized through composition of human scale's space by reasonable internal. A case of Sangju area, D/H ratio of the front area of buildings and courts was as follows. D/H=1>Hyangkyo> houses on the river>temples>lecture halls. D/H ratio ot the backside areas is as follows. D/H=1>Hyangkyo>houses on the river>lecture halls. 4. Inner garden were planted deciduous than evergreen trees with Lagerstroemia indica. Enclosed dominant trees were planted by Pinus densiflora, Querces seuata.construct GEM strain, and examined for the expression and functional stability in microcosms.

King Sejong's role in the repair of the Kyeongbok Palace in the early period of the Joseon Dynasty (조선초기 경복궁 수리에서 세종의 역할)

  • The Kyeongbok Palace was completely renewed during the reign of King Sejong, the fourth King of the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910). The repair was done for the two main purpose; one was to obtain the dignity of the main palace of the dynasty, the other was to make the palace suitable for the performing of the various ritual ceremonies. It was under the reign of King Sejong that every detail of the procedure of the royal ritual ceremony. The procedure of ritual ceremony changed the buildings of the palace. The quarter of Sajeong-jeon, King's office, was changed remarkably from the original form as the building became the beginning and ending point of King's moving during the ritual ceremonies. The site of the palace had ill reputation from the point of geomancy since its establishment. King Sejong ignored the rumor and kept the palace as usual. In his later year's, Sejong had tried to build a detached quarter and a Buddhist shrine in the palace. But he had to give up his plan because of the retainer's strong opposition. The original layout of the Kyeongbok Palace could be remained as the King renounced his controversial personal wish. King Sejong deserves a full credit for the establishment of the Kyeongbok Palace as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty.

The Collective Types of Architecture in Temple Gowoon (고운사(孤雲寺) 건축(建築)의 집합유형(集合類型) 연구(硏究))

  • A collective theory is tried in analysis on the architectural history of Temple Gowoon in Gyongbook Province. For this purpose, firstly, the chronicle of construction was composed based on the critical study of the old documents. Secondly, the drawings of existing facilities were made after the field survey. And lastly, the collective theory was be able to extracted from the relation between chronicle and physical composion of the Temple Gowoon. The whole temple is composed of two territories, northern one and southern, which are divided by the central ravine. Northern territory was enlarged from Gukrakgeon's cluster through Myongboogeon's to Yeonsoogeon's. On the other hand, southern territory was reduced its position and its size from Daewoongeon's cluster, which was one of the main cluster, to Monigeon's, sub one. These processes were the results of the architectural adjustment, that is say, the dogmatic principles adapted in the topographical environments. The collective forms of clusters are different from each other. Gukrakgeon's cluster is composed of four buildings which enclose the empty inner court. Monigeon's is similar to the small temple type, Myongboogeon's selects the straggling form, and Yoensoogeon's has the type of Confucian shrine. The various types of clusters were the physical settings to symbolize the religious heirarchy of their buildigs. In the front of temple area, Gawoonloo, which located on the ravine and has a big volume, integrates straggling clusters.

A Study on the Expression Style of the Sci-Fi Movie Set Design (SF 영화 세트 디자인의 표현 유형에 관한 연구)

  • In the Sci-Fi movie, with future scene in its setting, how images are shown in the film is very important. Sci-Fi movie is supposed to be expressed In different way of its set design. This study suggests various types of expression in Sci-Fi movies. Sci-Fi movies construct the narrative upon the binary opposition of nature vs. culture, human vs. nonhuman. Sci-Fi movie is a contested terrain where conservative, liberal and radical ideologies are competing. While liberal Sci-Fi movies consider the opposition compatible, conservative texts show the paranoid towards science and nonhumans. And, Sci-Fi movies are expressed as utopian and dystopian. Utopian and dystopian elements are found in the history of architecture. Utopian element is often found in the religious architecture, and those buildings are geometric, orderly, and gorgeous. Dystopian element is often found in modern architecture, and those are asymmetric, distorted, and incompleted. Conservative movie, which developing of science is expressed negatively, retains both utopian and dystopian elements evenly. Liberal movie, such as Space Opera which science is expressed positively, is changed from futurist and mechanical type into more simple, geometric and orderly shrine type. Radical movie, which the boundary of human and science is expressed darkly, retains dark, complex, and incomplete dystopian expression elements.
