  • Scoliosis is a complex musculoskeletal dieses requiring 3-D treatment with surgical instrumentation. Conventional corrective surgery for scoliosis was done based on empirical knowledge without information of the optimum position and operative procedure. Frequently, post operative change of rib hump increase and shoulder level imbalance caused serious problems in the view of cosmetics. To investigate the effect of correction surgery, a reconstructed 3-D finite element model for King-Moe type V was developed. Vertebrae, clavicle and other bony element were represented using rigid bodies. Kinematic joints and nonlinear bar elements used to represent the intervertebral disc and ligaments according to reported experimental data. With this model, optimization technique was also applied in order to define the optimal magnitudes of correction. The optimization procedure corrected the scoliotic deformities by reducing the objective function by more than 94%. with an associated reduction of the scoliotic descriptors mainly on the frontal thoracic curve.

  • The personal authentication technique is an essential tool in this complex and modern digital information society. Traditionally, the most general mechanism of personal authentication was using alphanumeric passwords. However, passwords that are hard to guess or to break, are often hard to remember. There are demands for a technology capable of replacing the text-based password system. Graphical passwords can be an alternative, but it is vulnerable to shoulder-surfing attacks. This paper looks through a number of recently developed graphical password systems and introduces a personal authentication system using a machine learning technique with electroencephalography (EEG) signals as a new type of personal authentication system which is easier for a person to use and more difficult for others to steal than other preexisting authentication systems.

  • Adsorption mechanism of alkyl aldehydes, acetaldehyde, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde on cations supported by layer silicates was studied by means of IR spectroscopy and X-ray. An analysis of four characteristic split bands in the region of $1720∼1580㎝^{-1}$ was made. The carbonyl stretching band which shifted about $130㎝^{-1}$ to lower frequencies was observed only for $Ni^{2+}$ and Al^{3+}$ but slightly with $Ca^{2+}$ at high sample temperature and was attributed to >C=O…M complex formation. A sharp band which appeared as a shoulder at 1722 for acetaldehyde and 1690 for acrolein and crotonaldehyde was responsible for the interaction of carbonyl with surface hydroxyl. The second broad band which appeared at about 1710~1660 was responsible for hydrogen bonding between carbonyl oxygen and cationic hydroxyl group. The third band which appeared at about 1640~1660 was attributed to induced >C=C< double bond due to the strong carbonyl interaction. This was supported by the interlamellar spacings obtained by X-ray diffractometry.

  • Background: This study aimed to determine the effects of complex Korean medicine treatments on a patient suffering from tetraplegia caused by spinal cord injury. Case Summary: A 64-year-old female patient diagnosed with tetraplegia was treated using acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, knee joint motion style treatment (MST), and herbal medicine. Clinical symptoms were measured using the numeric rating scale (NRS) and manual muscle test (MMT). After 67 days of treatment, the NRS score for lower back pain and knee pain decreased from 7 to 3. For the shoulder joint the MMT grade improved from 3+/4+(Rt./Lt.) to 4/5-; in the hip joint, it improved from 3-/3+ to 4/4+. No side effects were observed from the treatments used in this case report. Conclusion: The complex Korean Medicine treatments appeared to be effective in recovering muscle strength and reducing pain in patients with tetraplegia caused by spinal cord injury.

  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which is a syndrome that is defined by pain and sudomotor and/or vasomotor instability, is usually resistant to conventional treatment. Here, a case involving a 30-year-old male patient with CRPS type I who showed severe intractable right shoulder pain with allodynia and hyperalgesia despite being treated with oral medications, nerve blocks including thoracic sympathetic neurolysis, and spinal cord stimulation is described. The patient frequently visited the emergency room due to severe uncontrollable breakthrough pain. Although a favorable effect was observed in response to intermittent ketamine infusion therapies that were performed on an outpatient basis, acute exacerbation of pain occurred frequently during the night and could not be controlled. Therefore, subcutaneous ketamine infusion therapy using a patient-controlled analgesic system was attempted and found to effectively control acute exacerbation of pain during 6 weeks of infusion without serious complications.

  • Upper limb morbidity including shoulder pain, lymphedema, adhesive capsulitis, myofascial pain syndrome, and limited range of motions (LROMs) occurs frequently in breast cancer patients. Especially restricted upper limb motion aggravated by chronic lymphedema results in functional limitation and impaired activities of daily living (ADL). However, conventional rehabilitation therapy including complex decongestive therapy and stretching exercise is insufficient for managing advanced breast cancer patients with complex upper limb morbidity. Here, we report a case of breast cancer-related chronic lymphedema in a 62-years old female with severe LROM in all joints of the affected upper extremity that caused severe disability in ADL. Significant improvements in range of motion and upper extremity function were observed after serial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), combined with conventional rehabilitation therapy. Therefore, ESWT might be recommended for managing the extensive limited joint motion which causes functional decline in a patient of chronic lymphedema with trophic skin change.

  • Need to develop human body's posture supervised robots, gave the push to researchers to think over dexterous design of exoskeleton robots. It requires to develop quantitative techniques to assess human motor function and generate the command to assist in compliance with complex human motion. Upper limb rehabilitation robots, are one of those robots. These robots are used for the rehabilitation of patients having movement disorder due to spinal or brain injuries. One aspect that must be fulfilled by these robots, is to cope with uncertainties due to different patients, without significantly degrading the performance. In this paper, we propose chattering free sliding mode control technique for this purpose. This control technique is not only able to handle matched uncertainties due to different patients but also for unmatched as well. Using this technique, patients feel active assistance as they deviate from the desired trajectory. Proposed methodology is implemented on seven degrees of freedom (DOF) upper limb rehabilitation robot. In this robot, shoulder and elbow joints are powered by electric motors while rest of the joints are kept passive. Due to these active joints, robot is able to move in sagittal plane only while abduction and adduction motion in shoulder joint is kept passive. Exoskeleton performance is evaluated experimentally by a neurologically intact subjects while varying the mass properties. Results show effectiveness of proposed control methodology for the given scenario even having 20 % uncertain parameters in system modeling.
