  • Biofilters packed with various materials commonly show problems such as low performance and clogging in a long-term operation. Recently, a bioactive foam reactor(BFR) using surfactants has been suggested to ensure efficient and stable VOCs removal performance. This study was mainly conducted to investigate the feasibility of the BFR system using styrene as a model compound. An abiotic md a biotic tests were conducted to estimate a mass transfer coefficient($K_La$) and a specific substrate utilization coefficient(k) for the BFR, showing the rate of mass transfer was greater in the BFR than in other diffuser systems. A dynamic loading test also indicated that the performance of the BFR was stable under a shock loading condition. Furthermore, the maximum elimination capacity of the BFR was determined to be 109 $g/m^3/hr$ for styrene, which was much higher than those for biofilter systems generally reported in the literature. Overall, the experimental results suggest that the BFR be a potential alternative to the conventional packed-bed biofilters.

  • When emergency core cooling system (ECCS) is operated during loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), pressurized thermal shock (PTS) phenomenon can occur as cooling water is injected into a cold leg, mixed with hot primary coolant, and then entrained into a reactor vessel. Insufficient flow mixing may cause temperature stratification and steam condensation. In addition, flow vibration may cause thermal stresses in surrounding structures. This will reduce the life of the reactor vessel. Due to the importance of PTS phenomenon, in this study, calculation was performed for Test 1 among six types of OECD/NEA ROSA tests with ANSYS CFX R.17. Predicted results were then compared to measured data. Additionally, because temperature difference between the hot coolant at the inlet of the cold leg and the cold cooling water at the inlet of the ECCS injection line is 200 K or more, buoyancy force due to density difference might have significant effect on thermal-hydraulic characteristics of flow. Therefore, in this study, the necessity to include buoyancy force term in governing equations for accurate prediction of single phase thermal stratification in both cold legs and downcomer by ECCS injection was numerically studied.

  • Drivers are becoming more fatigued and uncomfortable with increase in traffic density, and this condition can lead to slower reaction time. Consequently, they may face the danger of traffic accidents due to their inability to cope with frequent gear shifting. To reduce this risk, some drivers prefer automatic transmission (AT) over manual transmission (MT). The AT offers more superior drivability and less shifting shock than the MT; therefore, the AT market share has been increasing. The AT is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU), which provides better shifting performance. The transmission control unit (TCU) is a higher-value-added product, so the companies that have advanced technologies end to evade technology transfer. With more cars gradually using the ECU, the TCU is expected to be faster and more efficient for organic communication and arithmetic processing between the control systems than the l6-bit controller. In this paper, the model of an automatic transmission vehicle using MATLAB/Simulink is developed for the Hardware in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation with a 32-bit embedded system, and also the AT control logic for shifting is developed by using MATLAB/Simulink. The developed AT control logic, transformed automatically by real time workshop toolbox, is loaded to a 32-bit embedded system platform based on Freescale's MPC565. With both vehicle model and 32-bit embedded system platform, we make the HIL simulation system and HIL simulation of AT based on real time operating system (RTOS) is performed. According to the simulation results, the developed HIL simulator will be used for the performance test of embedded system for AT with low cost and effort.

  • A novel application of nano-technology in the field of engineering, called colloidal damper, is investigated. This device is complementary to the hydraulic damper, having a cylinder-piston construction. Particularly for colloidal damper, the hydraulic oil is replacedby a colloidal suspension, which is consisted from a nano-porous matrix with controlled architecture and a lyophobic fluid. In this experimental work, the porous matrix is composed from silica gel, with labyrinth architecture, coated by organo-silicones substances in order to achieve a hydrophobic surface. Water is considered as associated lyophobic fluid. The colloidal damper test rig and the measuring technique of the hysteresis are described. the influence of the hydrophobicity level upon the colloidal damper hysteresis is investigated, for silica gels with similar pores distribution. A certain desired shape of the hysteresis can be achieved by employing mixture of silica gels with different level of hydrophobicity and/or architecture. With these results, it is believed that the proposed damper can be designed and be applied to the desired structure.

  • The main objective of this paper is to design and test a new type of polymer ZnO surge arrester for AC power system of railroad vehicles. Metal oxide surge arrester for most electric power system applications, electric train and subway are now being used extensively to protect overvoltage due to lightning. Surge arresters with porcelain housing must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. When breakdown of ZnO elements in a surge arrester occurs due to flashover, fault short current flows through the arrestor and internal pressure of the arrester rises. The pressure rise can usually be limited by fitting a pressure relief diaphragm and transferring the arc from the inside to the outside of the housing. However, there is possibility of porcelain fragmentation caused by the thermal shock, pressure rise. etc. Non-fragmenting of the housing is the most desired way to prevent damage to other equipment. The pressure change which is occurred by flashover become discharge energy. This discharge energy raises to damage arrester housing and arrester housing is dispersed as small fragment. Therefore, the pressure relief design is requested to obstruct housing dispersion. The main research works are focused on the structure design by finite element method, pressure relief of module, and studies of performance of surge arrester for electric railway vehicle.

  • Tetanus is rare in Korea due to the introduction of vaccination programs and the advancement in public health. Its common signs are trismus, voice disturbance, neck stiffness, and difficulty in swallowing, etc. A 56 years old man was injured by grasping a high voltage electric cable. After the accident, he fell down on a steel plate and had a head trauma. When he visited Emergency Department, there was multiple electric burn wound on left arm and left facial area. He was hospitalized on a department of neurosurgery, because intra cranial hemorrhage was presumed. 12 days later, he was referred to department of OMFS with developed painful masseter spasms and trismus. That night he violently bit his tongue with his denture. Because masseter muscle and temporal muscle constriction was involuntary, tongue was lacerated and denture was distorted. At first we supposed that the symptom was related with neurologic disturbance following head trauma or electric shock. But it was revealed that trismus was caused by tetanus on an electrophysiological test. By using mechanical ventilation and administration of tetanus immunoglobulin, muscle-relaxant, and sedatives at ICU, symptoms had subsided (4-weeks). Because tetanus is rare disease, we rarely suppose tetanus infection to be a cause of a trismus. Especially it is more difficult to diagnose in patient who has head trauma, burn and neurologic problem as in this case.

  • Students who have correct conception didn't show big changes in a test of cognitive conflict, while students who have misconception made significant changes Most students who had misconception were considerably curious about demonstration of an actual phenomenon. On the other hand, according to their own confidence of preconception, the higher confidence of misconception is, the bigger conflicts are and when they meet some different phenomenon unlike their ideas, their psychological shock was big. After a cognitive conflict lesson, students' conception was significantly changed regardless of students' confidence of preconception and the persistence effect new conceptions showed similar result as preceeding research regardless of confidence of preconception. That is, the change decreased from immediate after demonstration of an conflict situation to a week after. After conceptual change, students' confidence of correct conception was generally increased, so it turned out that cognitive conflict lesson had a positive effect on students who had a misconception.

  • Thrust vector control system is control device which is mounted exit of the nozzle to generate pitch, yaw and roll directional force by deflecting flow direction of the supersonic jet from the nozzle. By obtaining control force, jetvane which is exposed in jet flow is working thermal and aerodynamic load. Axial thrust loss and side thrust is affected by shock patterns and interactions between jetvanes according to jetvane geometry and turning angle. In this study, we designed 6 types of jetvane to evaluate pitch, yaw and roll characteristics of ietvane in supersonic flow, and perform the cold flow test in range of turning angles of jetvanes between $0^{\cire}$ and $25^{\cire}$ by $5^{\cire}$ respectively. Also, calculation is going side by side to analyse flow interaction. Results show that there is no interactions between jetvanes upto turning angle 20$^{\circ}$, chord and lead length ratio is very important parameter to aerodynamic performance and maximum thrust loss is appeard to 17% of axial thrust in roll directional control.

  • In the present study were examined numerically and experimentally the off-design performance characteristics on an axisymmetric plug nozzle with variable throat area. In this nozzle concept, its throat area can be changed by translating the plug into the axial direction. First, a mixed-expansion plug nozzle, in which two expansion parts are arranged both inside and outside, was designed by means of the method of characteristics. Second, the CFD analysis was verified by the cold-flow wind tunnel test. Third, its performance characteristics were evaluated over a wide range of pressure ratio from half to double throat area through the design point, using the CFD code verified by the wind tunnel tests. It was made clear from the study that not so critical thrust efficiency losses were found and the maximum thrust efficiency loss was at most approximately 5 % under off-design conditions without external flow. This result shows that a plug nozzle can give the altitude compensation even under off-design geometry operations. However, shock waves were observed in the inner expansion part under the doubled throat area operation and thus some thermal problems may be caused on the plug surface. Furthermore, collapse of cell structure on the plug surface was observed with external flow (around Mach number 2.0) as it became lower pressure ratio below the design point and the fact may result in big efficiency loss regardless of geometrical configuration.
