Hypersonic wind tunnel test of the rectangular variable geometry intake is performed. For realization of a Precooled turbojet engine, development of a hypersonic ramjet engine is planned. To investigate performance of the intake of the hypersonic ramjet engine, wind tunnel test is done with freestream Mach number of 5.1. The total pressure recovery was 18 % with 12.9 % of ramp bleed. Several reasons for low total pressure recovery are shown. Supersonic internal compression is not enough. Then, the throat Mach number is high (M2.61) and total pressure losses at the terminal shock is large. Supersonic flow at the throat and position of the terminal shock is sensitive to a difference of the second ramp's throat height and the third ramp's throat height. Flow separations at the second ramp's trailing edge and the third ramp's leading edge are seen those could result in the trigger of unstart. The seal mechanism between the ramps and the sidewalls is important.
When a shock wave is discharged from the exit of a duct, complicated flow is formed near the duct exit. The flow field is much more complicated under the ground effects or any other objects near the exit of a duct, such as the circumstance near the exit of the high-speed railway tunnel. The resulting flow is essentially three-dimensional unsteady with the effects of strong compressibility. In the current study, three-dimensional flow fields of the weak shock wave which is discharged from the exit of a duct are numerically investigated using a CFD method. Computations are performed for the weak shock wave in the range below 1.5. The results obtained show that the directivity and magnitude of the weak shock discharged strongly depend upon the Mach number of initial shock wave and are significantly influenced by the ground effects.
Fracture characteristics of plates and dome shapes for machinable glass ceramics using compressed shock wave. Machinable glass ceramics have been considered as a promising candidate material for the dome port cover of air breathing engine. This part of the air breathing engine has an important role separating solid and liquid fuel, and needs the frangible characteristics whereby the fracture of a part should not affect the internal components of combustion. The objective of this study are to evaluate the fracture pressure and phenomena of separated membrane using a shock tunnel. The experimental apparatus consists of driver, a driven section and a dump tank. The used material is machinable glass ceramic from Corning company. Specimens are used 3, 4.5 and 6mm thickness with plates and dome shapes. It is expected that the results obtained from this study can be used in the basic data for the dome port cover design of an air breathing engine.

When a high-speed railway train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates through the tunnel, compressing and accelerating the rest air in front of the wave. At the exit of the tunnel, an impulsive wave is emitted outward toward the surrounding, which causes a positive impulsive noise like a kind of sonic boom produced by a supersonic aircraft. With the advent of high-speed train, such an impulsive noise can be large enough to cause the noise problem, unless some attempts are made to alleviate its pressure levels. In the purpose of the impulsive noise reduction, the present study calculated the effect of porous walls on the compression wave propagating into a model tunnel. Two-dimensional unsteady compressible equations were differenced by using a Piecewise Linear Method. Calculation results show that the cavity/porous wall system is very effective for a compression wave with a large nonlinear effect. The porosity of 30% is most effective for the reduction of the maximum pressure gradient of the compression wave front. The present calculation results are in a good agreement with experimental ones obtained previously.

The experiments for NACA airfoils are conducted as the preliminary study for the aerodynamic characteristics of the transonic airfoil flow in the shock tube. The test section configurations were designed to use shock tube as simple and less costly experimental facility generating transonic flow at relatively high Reynolds numbers. Experiments at hot gas Mach numbers of 0.80, 0.82 and 0.84, Reynolds numbers of about $1.2\times10^6$ on airfoil chord length and angle of attack of $0^{\circ}\;and\;2^{\circ}$ were carried out by means of shadowgraph visualization method and static pressure measurements. Visualization results were compared with the corresponding results from the conventional transonic wind tunnel tests. The results of study showed that present shock tube facility is useful to study the proper performance characteristics in transonic Mach number range.
The effects of nonequilibrium condensation on the shock boundary layer interaction over a transonic bump model were investigated experimentally and numerically. An experiment was conducted using a supersonic indraft wind tunnel. A droplet growth equation was incorporated into two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations were carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order fractional time step. Computation compared with the experimental results. Nonequilibirum condensation suppressed the boundary layer separation and the pressure fluctuations due to the shock boundary layer interaction. Especially the nonequilbrium condensation was helpful to suppress the high frequency components of the pressure fluctuations.

To predict the transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions, a practical steady approach has been proposed. In this study, it is assumed that the airfoil flow is steady even when buffet onset occurs. Steady Navier-Stokes computations are performed on the supercritical airfoil. Using the aerodynamic parameters calculated from Navier-Stokes solver, various steady approaches for predicting buffet onset are discussed. Among the various steady approaches considered in this study, Thomas' criterion based on Navier-Stokes computation has shown to be the most appropriate indicator of identifying the buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions. Good agreements have been obtained compared with the results of unsteady transonic wind tunnel tests. The present method is shown to be reliable and useful for transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions in terms of practical engineering viewpoint.

An experimental study has been carried out in a supersonic blow-down wind tunnel for examining the influence of streamwise vortices on normal shock-wave/boundary layer interaction. It has been reported by the earlier investigator the streamwise vortices generated by the blowing jets can significantly suppress the shock-induced separation and reduce the wave drag. The blowing jets generate the streamwise vortices with 45$^{\circ}$ angle in the spanwise direction. The shock waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system. Appropriate measurement systems are provided for the characterization of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The chamber pressure ratio and blowing pressure ratio are varied from 1.5 to 2.4 and 1.0 to 2.0 respectively.

Measured shock wave effects were investigated by changing shock strength and position with particular emphasis on the stability limits of hydrogen-air jet flames. For this purpose, a supersonic nonpremixed, jet-like flame was stabilized along the axis of a Mach 2.5 wind tunnel, and wedges were mounted on the sidewall in order to interact oblique shock waves with the flame. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Schilieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and flame stability limits were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock-flame interaction. Substantial improvements in the flame stability limits were achieved by properly interacting the shock waves with the flameholding recirculation zone. The reason for the significant improvement in flame stability limits is believed to be the adverse pressure gradient caused by the shock, which can elongate the recirculation zone.
