Buffering effects of shock loads in sequencing batch reactor (SBR에서 충격부하에 따른 완충효과)

  • In this study, we investigated the buffering effect with different COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and TP shock loads on the performance of lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) using synthetic wastewater. This study was operated under the following conditions : HRT, 12 hrs : MLSS, 2,000 mg/L : F/M ratio, $0.2kgCOD/kgMLSS{\cdot}d$ : SRT, 20days, and was increased by a factor, COD : ranging from 200-2000 mg/L, $NH_4{^+}-N$ : ranging from 30-300 mg/L, T-P : ranging from 5-50 mg/L in the reactor. As results, COD removal rate at different shock loads was decreased until 42.1%(stable state : 95%) and concentration with effluent was higher than 695 mg/L(at Run 6). In case of $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal rate was decreased until 35.8% from 97.0% and also T-P removal rate was decreased until 5.0%. Effluent concentrations of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and T-P were rapidly increased according to shock loads and needed 3, 4 and 6 additional cycle times for recovering the stable condition.

Dynamic Load Analysis of Aircraft Landing Gear (항공기 착륙장치 동하중 해석)

  • Role of landing gear is to absorb energy which is generated by aircraft ground maneuvering and landing. Generally, in order to absorb the impact energy, oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber is used in aircraft landing gear. Oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber has a good energy absorption efficiency and is light in weight because structure of oleo-pneumatic type shock strut is relatively simple. In this study, dynamic load analysis for swinging arm type landing gear was performed to predict landing loads. Modeling of landing gear was conducted with MSC.ADAMS, and dynamic landing loads were analyzed based on ADS-29. Optimum landing loads were generated through adjustment of damping orifice and the analysis results were presented with various aircraft attitude.

COMS Shock Test Assessment by Using the Extrapolation Method (외삽법을 이용한 천리안위성 충격시험 분석)

  • The COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is subjected to shock loads when the stage or fairing of a launch vehicle is separated and the satellite is separated from the launch vehicle during the launch vehicle flight. And, after the satellite is separated from the launcher, the COMS is subjected to shock loads when the solar array is deployed, Ka-Band communication antenna is deployed, and meteorological imager radiator cover is released. In order to validate the satellite safety against these shock loads on ground, shock tests were performed. In this paper, the shock tests performed in the course of the COMS development are described, and the method to assess the test result is presented with an example of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI). In Ariane-5 launch vehicle, the clampband release shock for satellite separation is lower than the fairing or stage separation. In this paper, the extrapolation method to take into account the maximum shock load from the launch vehicle by using the satellite separation shock test result is also introduced.

Comparison of Aerobic Fixed-film Process Response to Quantitative and Hydraulic Shock for the Same Increases in Mass Loading (호기성 고정생물막반응기에서 동일 질량부하의 수리학적 및 농도충격부하시 반응의 비교)

  • The objective of this study was to examine and compare to transient response to quantitative and hydraulic shocks which produce equal changes in mass rate of organic feed in aerobic fixed-film process. The general experimental approach was to operate the system at several growth rates under steady-state(pre-shock) conditions, then to apply step changes during day 3 in dilution rate(hydraulic shock) , or feed concentration(Quantitative shock) at the same organic mass loading rate. Performance was assessed in both the transient state and the new steady-state (post- shock). Shock load of different type did not produced equivalent disruptions of effluent quality for equal increases in mass loading rate. Based on effluent concentrations, a hydraulic and a Quantitative shock at the same mass loading caused equal increase in total effluent COD, but the increase was primarily a result of suspended solids the hydraulic shock and COD in the quantitative shock. The time which effluent COD came to peak values were about 32~48 hours at the low organic loads and 52 ~ 72 hours at the high organic loads, respectively A quantitative shock produced a much greater increase in effluent COD than did a hydraulic shock at the same mass loading. Mean and peak values of effluent concentration weve increased in 2.8~4.2 times at low organic loading rate, 5.2~6.6 times at the high organic loading rate, respectively.   • The interaction patterns between shock wave and boundary layer in a rocket nozzle are mainly classified into two categories, FSS(Free Shock Separation) and RSS(Restricted Shock Separation), both of which are associated with the thrust characteristics as well as side loads of the engine. According to the previous investigations, strong side loads of the engine are produced during the period of transition from FSS to RSS or vice versa. The present work aims at investigating the unsteady behavior of the separation shock waves in a two-dimensional supersonic nozzle, using experimental method and CFD. Schlieren optical method was employed to visualize the time-mean and time-dependent shock motions in the nozzle. The unsteady, compressible N-S equations with SST K-$\omega$ turbulence closure were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The results obtained show the separation shock motions during the transition of the interaction pattern.

A Computational Study on the Unsteady Lateral Loads in a Rocket Nozzle

  • Highly over-expanded nozzle of the rocket engines will be excited by non-axial forces due to flow separation at sea level operations. Since rocket engines are designed to produce axial thrust to power the vehicle, non-axial static and/or dynamic forces are not desirable. Several engine failures were attributed to the side loads. Present work investigate the unsteady flow in an over-expanded rocket nozzle in order to estimate side load during a shutdown/starting. Numerical computations has been carried out with density based solver on multi-block structured grid. Present solver is explicit in time and unsteady time step is calculated using dual time step approach. AUSMDV is considered as a numerical scheme for the flux calculations. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. Results presented here is for two nozzle pressure ratio i.e. 100 and 20. At 100 NPR, restricted shock separation (RSS) pattern is observed while, 20 NPR shows free shock separation (FSS) pattern. Side load is observed during the transition of separation pattern at different NPR.

A Study on an Optimal Spot-weld Layout Design for a Shock Tower Structure Considering the Fatigue Life under Random Vibration Loads (불규칙 진동하중을 받는 쇽 타워의 피로수명을 고려한 점용접 위치 최적설계)

  • In this paper, optimal spot weld layout design for a shock tower structure is presented. This design increases the fatigue life of the spot-welds thereby increasing the fatigue life of the shock tower itself. In order to predict the fatigue life, a quasi-static analysis has been conducted then a fatigue analysis was performed through the application of random vibration loads. In order to optimize the spot weld layout, the design variables that have an effect on the spot weld fatigue life were determined. A spot weld fatigue analysis was then conducted based on the experiment design. Finally, a response surface model was made using the fatigue analysis results and an optimized spot weld layout model, one that increases the fatigue life of the spot welds and thereby the fatigue life of the shock tower, was developed.

  • Guided missiles assembled with the bolted joint are subjected to various shock loading conditions while flying in the air and operating on the ground or platform. Especially, It is important to analyze the effect of the shock load on the structure because it affects the structure for a short duration time while its acceleration magnitude is quite large. In this study, mechanical shock tests on the structure with the bolted joint have been carried out to measure the acceleration changes of the structure against external shock loads by electrical exciter. Variation of dynamic characteristics of a structure with fastening methods and fastening forces has been investigated through Shock Response Spectrum analysis.

Performance Investigation of Variable Damping Shock Attenuation Logic (가변 감쇠를 이용한 충격제어기법의 성능분석)

  • Launch vehicles cause several shock events during their lift-off. The excessive shock loads in the several thousands of g's level can results in permanent damage to electronics, optics and other sensitive payload components. The shock can be attenuated by mounting a shock absorber. In this paper, we proposed a semi-active control logic to attenuate the shock so that the input acceleration to main instruments does not exceed the allowable maximum acceleration value. For the performance investigation, two elements model of variable damping and spring stiffness has been used and the analysis results indicate that the proposed semi-active control logic attenuates shock level better than an optimal passive and conventional semi-active on-off control system.

Structural and Fatigue Analysis on Shock Absorber Mount of Automobile (자동차의 쇽업쇼바 마운트에 대한 구조 및 피로해석)

  • This study aims at structural analysis with fatigue on the shock absorber mount of automobile. Two kinds of mount as original model 1 and reinforced model 2 are applied. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads at both models, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'SAE bracket history' or 'SAE transmission', the maximum fatigue life at model 2 is 5 to 6 times as much as model 1 and the minimum damage at model 2 is decreased 5 to 6 times as much as model 1. In case of 'Sample history' as slow fatigue loading history, the minimum damage at model 2 becomes same as model 1 but the maximum fatigue life at model 2 is decreased more than 17 times as much as model 1. In case of 'Sample History' with the average stress of -$10^4MPa$ to $10^4MPa$ and the amplitude stress of 0MPa to $10^4MPa$, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 3%. This stress state can be shown with 5 times more than the damage possibility of 'SAE bracket history' or 'SAE transmission'. Safe and durable design of shock absorber can be effectively improved by using this study result on mount frame.
