Epoxy Compound has been used as insulation material in cable accessories. During the applying voltage to cable, heat shock is induced to accessory by the temperature difference between atmosphere and conductor. In this study, crack resistance, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated about conventional epoxy compound and rubber toughened epoxy compound. Because rubber absorbs the stress caused by heat shock, crack resistance of rubber toughened epoxy compound is high. In the case of low thermal expansion coefficient, the compound shows high crack resistance because of low volumetric change.
In this study, the author investigated the effects of strengthening treatments on the mechanical properties of plasma sprayed Ni-base self fluxing alloy. Strengthening treatments for sprayed specimens were carried out in 4 different temperature conditions in vacuum furnace. The mechanical properties, such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance and erosion resistance were tested for the sprayed specimens after strengthening treatments. And it was proved that the mechanical properties of coating layer were much improved by strengthening treatments.
Toluene tolerance and therrnotolerance in Crampositive organic solvent resistant bacterium Micrococcus sp. BCNU 121 has been studied. Exposure to a sub- lethal temperature or a sub-lethal concentration of toluene conferred protection to subsequent challenges with a killing temperature or a lethal concentration of toluene, respectively. Pretreatment of Micrococcus sp. BCNU 121 with sub-lethal concentrations of toluene induced adaptative protection against heat shock. Moreover, temperature-adaptative cells also showed cross-resistance to lethal doses of toluene. These data suggested a cross-regulation between toluene tolerance and heat shock response.
The plasma spray process was used to deposit coatings of $ZrO_2$-8wt%Y2O3 powders on mild steel sub-strate, and the characteristics of as-deposited and heat treated coatings have been investigated. Particulary, the variations of porosity, wear resistance, thermal barrier and thermal shock resistance in $ZrO_2$-8wt% $Y_2O_3$coatings after heat treatment under vacuum circumstance have been investigated. The porosity of the coating layer was increased with increased spray distance. In the case of the arc current of 450A and at the spray distance of 50mm, it was obtained the lowest amount of porosity. After heat treatment, the amount of porosity was found to be decreased, and the wear resistance, microhardness and thermal shock resistance were im-proved. However, the thermal barrier was decreased.
The Thermal Barrier Coating(TBC) has been used to improve the heat barrier and tribological properties of the aircraft engine and the automobile engine in high temperature. Especially, the high temperature tribological propertied of the cylinder haed and the piston crown of diesel engine was emphasized. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the microstructure, tribological propeer in high tempearmal shock resistance and bonding strength of five layer functionally gradient TBC for the applications. The five layerwere composed with 100% ceramic insulating later, 75(ceramic):25 (metal) layer, 50:50 layer, 25:75 layer and 100% metal bonding layer to redude the thermal stress. the YSL and MSL poweders were the insulation ceramics powers. The NiCrAly, Inconel625 and SUS powders were the bonding and mixingg powders for plasma spray process. According to the result of high temperature wear test, the wera resistance of YSZ/NiCrAlY siytem was most out standing at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. At $400^{\circ}C$, the wear resistance of YSZ/Inconel system was better than others. Wear volume at other temperature because of the low temperature degration of zirconia. The thermal shock mechanism of 5 later is the vertical crack gegration in insulating layer. this means that the initial cracks were generated in the top layer, and then developed into the composite layers during thermal shock test. Finally, these cracks werereached to the interface of coating and substrate and also, these vertioal cracks join with the horizontal cracks of the each layers. The bonding strength of YSZ/NiCrAlY and YSZ/Inconel 5 layer system is better than other 5layer systems. The theramal shock resistance of thermal barrier coating s with 5 layer system is better than that of 3 layers and 2 layers.
Cordierite composed of an alumina-silica-magnesia compound has a low coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) and excellent thermal shock resistance. It also has a low dielectric constant and high electrical insulation. However, due to low mechanical strength, it is limited for use in a ceramic heater. In this study, $ZrO_2$ is added to an 80 wt% cordierite-20 wt% mullite composition, and the effect of $ZrO_2$ addition on the mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance is investigated. With an increasing addition of $ZrO_2$, cordierite-mullite formed $ZrO_2$, $ZrSiO_4$ and spinel phases. With sintering conducted at $1400^{\circ}C$ with the addition of 5 wt% $ZrO_2$ to 80 wt% cordierite-20 wt% mullite, the most dense microstructure forms along with an excellent mechanical strength with a 3-point flexural strength of 238MPa. When this composition is quenched in water at ${\Delta}T=400^{\circ}C$, the 3-point flexural strength is maintained. Moreover, when this composition is cooled from $800^{\circ}C$ to air, the 3-point flexural strength is maintained even after 100 cycles. In addition, the CTE is measured as $3.00{\times}10^{-6}{\cdot}K^{-1}$ at $1000^{\circ}C$. Therefore, 80 wt% cordierite-20 wt% mullite with 5 wt% $ZrO_2$ is considered to be appropriate as material for a ceramic heater.
When NIH3T3 cells were exposed to mild heat and recovered at $37^{\circ}C$ for various time intervals, they were thermotolerant and resistant to subsequent stresses including heat, oxidative stresses, and antitumor drug methotrexate which are apoptotic inducers. The induction kinetics of apoptosis by stresses were determined by DNA fragmentation and protein synthesis using $[35^S]$methionine pulse labeling. We investigated the hypothesis that thermotolerant cells were resistant to apoptotic cell death compared to control cells when both cells were exposed to various stresses inducing apoptosis. The cellular changes in thermotolerant cells were examined to determine which components are involved in this resistance. At first, the degree of resistance correlates with the extent of heat shock protein synthesis which were varied depending on the heating times at $45^{\circ}C$ and recovery times at $37^{\circ}C$after heat shock. Secondly, membrane permeability change was observed in thermotolerant cells. When cells prelabeled with $[^{3}H]$thymidine were exposed to various amounts of heat and recovered at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1/2 to 24 h, the permeability of cytosolic $[^{3}H]$thymidine in thermotolerant cells was 4 fold higher than that in control cells. Thirdly, the protein synthesis rates in thermotolerant and control cells were measured after exposing the cells to the same extent of stress. It turned out that thermotolerant cells were less damaged to same amount of stress than control cells, although the recovery rates are very similar to each other. These results demonstrate that an increase of heat shock proteins and membrane changes in thermotolerant cells may protect the cells from the stresses and increase the resistance to apoptotic cell death, even though the exact mechanism should be further studied.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle(HFCV) is system that uses electrical energy of fuel cell stack to main power source, which is different system with other vehicles that use high-voltage, large-current. Isolation performance of this system which is connected with electrical fire and electrical shock is important point. Isolation resistance of electric installation is divided according to working voltage, it follows criterion more than $100{\Omega}$/VDC (or $500{\Omega}$/VAC) about system operation voltage in a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Although measurement of isolation resistance in a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is two methods, it uses mainly measurement by megger. However, the present isolation resistance measurement system that is optimized to use in electrical facilities is unsuitable for isolation performance estimation of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle because of limit of maximum short current and difference of measurement resolution. Therefore, this research developed the isolation resistance measurement system so that may be suitable in isolation performance estimation of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, verified isolation performance about known resistance by performance verification of laboratory level about developed system, and executed performance verification through comparing results of developed system by performance verification of vehicle level with ones of existing megger. Developed system is judged to aid estimation and upgrade of isolation performance in a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle hereafter.
This study performed an experiment for the danger of an electric shock in the human body, which is directly touched or approached to the exposure of buried metals in a leak caused by certain ground faults at a buried cable in street lamp. In the results of the experiment, the dangerous of electric shocks due to the earth specific resistance and wet and submersion of the earth surface represents a high level as the human body is directly touched to the buried metal at a leak point. In addition, it can be seen that the safety of the human body is influenced by the earth specific resistance, separated distance from buried metals, and shape of buried metals at around the leak point.
Recently, the shock resistance and dynamic characteristics of hard disk drives have become more important due to their highly increased storage density and miniaturization. In this study, we have developed an ANSYS/Mechanical/LS-DYNA based HDD vibration/shock simulation tool for design engineers. This simulation tool using ANSYS APDL can produce a parametric finite element modeling of HDD automatically and has GUI-based applications using the script program language Tcl/Tk. In the present tool, we adopt the reliable methodology of vibration/shock simulation, which is experimentally verified. It is expected that this simulation tool can make the repetitive computational efforts for the shock-proof design of HDD drastically reduced.
