The dynamic behaviors of a KT-1 family aircraft nose landing gear have been analyzed and the optimal design of an aircraft shock absorber has been conducted to improve efficiency of shock energy absorption. The nose landing gear is modeled as a 2 DOF system using ADAMS and various operational and environmental landing conditions were considered. The results of dynamic simulation for various landing conditions agree well with experiments. Also the effect of parameters of a shock strut on the dynamic behaviors and on shock energy absorption of the nose landing gear has been evaluated for optimal design to define design variables. It has been found that the parameters of a shock strut such as oil-density and orifice area have more effects on dynamic behaviors than those of operation conditions. Optimal design is performed to maximize the efficiency of shock energy absorption using Feasible Direction Method. As a result the design values of the shock strut for maximum efficiency of shock energy absorption are derived and it turns out that efficiency and dynamic behaviors of the nose landing gear were improved by the optimal design.

Shock absorption performances of various rubbers were investigated by using drop impact test. Several types of rubber such as NR, NBR, EPDM, SR and PUR with three respective levels of shore hardness were used for the test. As in the cases, the absorbed impact energies in rubbers were measured under seven different loads against impact energy between 5-80J. The impact absorption efficiencies of the rubbers then were evaluated by means of both single impact energy condition and summation of all impact energy applied condition. As shown in the results, PUR and EPDM have better shock absorption performances than other rubbers. Further analysis was extended to determine a shear modulus of SR through the finite element implementation with Blatz-Ko model. As can be seen, relatively higher level of absorption energy results in a decreasing shear modulus.

In this study, a front suspension system, which is mounted on the handle itself, was suggested because of its light weight and cost efficiency. The shock absorption was evaluated for the three types of suspension models; non-suspension, suspension on front forks (existing model), and suspension on handle (suggested model). The human body model was used for performing impact simulation for comparing the shock absorption for the suspension models. The result of the simulation shows that shock absorption for the proposed suspension model was not as good as that for the front fork suspension model. Nevertheless, the shock absorption observed for the proposed suspension model was significant when compared to the non-suspension model. Consequently, the proposed suspension model could be applied to lightweight bicycles.

The purpose of this paper is to predict the shock absorbing characteristics of the aluminum honeycomb in a lunar lander. Aluminum honeycomb has been used for shock absorbers of lunar lander due to its characteristics such as light weight, high energy absorption efficiency and applicability under severe space environments. Crush strength of the honeycomb should have strength to endure during shock energy absorbing process. In this paper, the crush strength, which depends on the shape of honeycomb and impact velocity, is estimated using FEM. Ls-dyna is used for finite element analysis of the honeycomb shock absorber. The unit cells of the honeycomb shape are modeled and used for the finite element analysis. Energy absorption characteristics are decided considering several conditions such as impact velocity, foil thickness and branch angle of the honeycomb.

Main role of landing gear is to absorb the energy which is generated by aircraft lanidng and ground maneuvering. Generally, in order to absorb the impact energy during landing, oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber is used for aircraft landing gear. Oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber has a good energy absorbing efficiency and is light in weight because its structure is relatively simple. For the landing gear development, it is necessary to conduct drop test in order to verify shock absorbing performance. In the drop test, first, gas spring curve verification tests are conducted. Then, limit and reserve energy absorption drop tests are performed based on the STANAG 4671. The drop tests results with performance analysis results are presented.

Modeling of landing gear was conducted with MSC.ADAMS, and dynamic landing loads were analyzed based on ADS-29. Optimum landing loads were generated through adjustment of damping orifice and the analysis results were presented with various aircraft attitude.

In the paper, a design method of knee and pelvis joint in the biped robot is proposed for shock absorption and gravity compensation. Similarly to the human's body, the knee joints of the biped robot support most body weight and get a shock from the landing motion of the foot on the floor. The torque of joint motor is also increased sharply to keep the balance of the robot. Knee and pelvis joints with the spring are designed to compensate the gravity force and reduce the contact shock of the robot. To verify the efficiency of the proposed design method, we develope a biped robot with the joint mechanism using springs. At first, we experiment with the developed robot on the static motions such as the bent-knee posture both without load and with load on the flat ground, and the balance posture on the incline plane. The current of knee joint is measured to analyze the impact force and energy consumption of the joint motors. Also, we observe the motor current of knee and pelvis joints for the walking motion of the biped robot. The current responses of joint motors show that the proposed method has an effect on shock reduction and gravity compensation, and improve the energy efficiency of walking motions for the biped robot.
Reliable and accurate method of computationally aided design processes of advanced thin walled structures in automotive industries are much essential for the efficient usage of smart materials, that possess higher energy absorption in dynamic compression loading. In this paper, most versatile components i.e., thin walled crash tubes with different geometrical profiles are introduced in view of mitigating the impact of varying cross section in crash behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Apart from the geometrical parameters such as length, diameter and thickness, the non-dimensionalized parameters of average forces which control the plastic bending moment for varying thickness has explored in view of quantifying its impact on the crashworthiness of the structure. The explicit finite element code ABAQUS is utilized to conduct the numerical studies to examine the effect of parametric modifications in crash behavior and energy absorption. Also the simulation results are experimentally validated. It is evident that the circular cross-sectional tubes are preferable as high collision impact shock absorbers due to their ability in withstanding axial and oblique impact loads effectively. Furthermore, the specific energy absorption (SEA), crash force efficiency (CFE), plastic bending moment, peak force responses and its impact for optimally tailoring a design to cater the crashworthiness requirements are investigated. The primary outcome of the study is to provide sufficient information on circular tubes for the use of energy absorbers where impact oblique loading is expected.

The integration of the landing gear system is a complex relationship between the many conflicting parameters of shock absorption, minimum stow area, complexity, weight and cost. Especially ground impact load and dynamic behaviors greatly influence design load of landing gear components as well as load carrying structural attachment. This study investigates ground impact load and dynamic behaviors of the T-50 landing gear system using ADAMS. Taking into account for various operational/environmental conditions, an analysis of shock absorbing characteristics at ground impact is performed with experience derived from a wide range of proprietary designs. Analytical results are presented for discussing the effects of aircraft horizontal and vertical speed, landing attitudes, shock absorbing efficiency. This analysis leads us to the conclusion that the proposed program is shown to be a better quantitative one that apply to a new development and troubleshooting of the landing gear system.
Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is well adopted for community wastewater treatment for its simplicity, performance and various advantageous treatment options. SBR is now drawing attention for its process modification such as coupled with membrane bioreactor, reverse osmosis or applying different media to achieve high removal efficiency. This study focused on the improved efficiency of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous removal by applying zeolite materials called bioceramics to the SBR. Two laboratory-scale SBR units were operated in the same operating conditions - one with bioceramics called Bioceramic SBR (BCSBR) and the other without bioceramics used as control. Routine monitoring of COD, TP, $NH_3-N$, $NO_3-N$ was performed throughout this study. COD removal was about 80% to 100% and phosphorous removal was about 60% in the process whereas $NH_3-N$ removal efficiency was found to be 99.9% in the BCSBR unit. Addition of bioceramics also improved sludge characteristics such as sludge dewaterability, specific gravity and particle size. BCSBR can withstand high ammonia shock loading leading to the better treatment capacity of high ammonia containing wastewater. The cause of improved removal efficiencies within the biological reactor could be attributed to the biochemosorption mechanisms of bioceramics. Absorption/adsorption or desorption capacity of bioceramics was tested through laboratory experiments.
