  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade by experiment. The flow was visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersonic cascade with 3-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested over a wide range of pressure ratio. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions were observed.

  • The existing code which solves two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was modified to enable numerical simulation of various supersonic flows. For this, various boundary conditions have been implemented to the code. Bleed boundary condition was incorporated into the code for calculating wall mean flow quantities. Furthermore, boundary conditions for the turbulence quantities along rough surfaces as well as porous walls were applied to the code. The code was verified and validated by comparing the computational results against the experimental data for the supersonic flows over bleed region on a flat plate. Furthermore, numerical simulations for supersonic shock boundary layer interaction with a bleed region were performed and their results were compared with the existing computational results.

  • Numerical analysis of aerodynamic heating for KPSAM is performed using aerodynamic heating model suitable to KPSAM, which has complex flow field resulting from the spike attached to the dome, such as large separation area and the strong shock/boundary layer interaction region around reattachment point on the dome. The aerodynamic heating model is validated and modified through the comparison between the flight test measurement and the thermal analysis results. TFD temperature sensors are installed on the dome to measure surface temperature during the flight. Computation results, obtained from the heat transfer analysis on the sensors, agree well with flight test data. The aerodynamic heating model provides heat transfer rate into surface as a boundary condition of unsteady 1D/axisymmetric thermal analysis on the missile structure. The axisymmetric thermal analysis using FLUENT is more versatile than the 1D analysis and can be applied to the heating problem related with complex structures and multi-dimensional heat transfer problems such as prediction of temperature rise at contact surface of different materials.

  • In this paper, heat transfer changes due to the shock/boundary layer interaction were investigated on surfaces where protruding bodies such as a cylinder and a secondary jet are mounted. With an infra-red thermography, surface temperature was measured and the measured data was used to obtain the convective heat transfer. Heat transfer phenomena around these two solid and fluid bodies were appeared to be very comparable each other. The inclination of a cylinder and the jet injection ratio were the important factors for the change of heat transfer on the effective surfaces.

  • Impulsive shooting noise is basically complex phenomenon which contains the linear and non-linear characteristics. For those reasons, numerical analysis of impulsive shooting noise has the difficulties in control of the numerical stability and accuracy on the simulation. In this research, Wave-number Extended Finite Volume Scheme (WEFVS) is applied to the numerical analysis of impulsive shooting noise. In the muzzle blast flow simulation, the generation of the precursor wave and the induced vortex ring are observed. Consequently, blast wave. vortex ring interaction and vortex ring. bow shock wave interaction are evaluated on the shooting process using the accurate and stable scheme. The sound generation in the interactions can be explained by the vorticity transport theorem. The shear layer is evolved behind the projectiles due to the jet flow. In these computations, the impulsive shooting noise is generated by the complex interaction with shooting process and is propagated to the far-field boundary. The impulsive shooting noise generation can be observed by the applications of WEFVS and analyzed by the physical phenomena.

  • In this paper, non-reacting and reacting flowfields were computed using a preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver. The preconditioning technique of Merkle et al. and TVD scheme or Chakravarthy and Osher was employed and the results obtained using developed code have a good agreement with the previous results and experimental data. The preconditioned Wavier-Stokes equation set with low Reynolds number $\kappa-\epsilon$ equation and species continuity equations, are discretized with strongly implicit manner and time integrated with LU-SSOR scheme. For the purpose of treating unsteady problem the duel-time stepping scheme was employed. For the validation of the code in incompressible flow regime, steady driven square cavity flow was considered and calculation result shows reasonably good agreement with the result of incompressible code. Shock wave/boundary layer interaction problem was considered to show the shock capturing performance of preconditioned-TVD scheme. To validate unsteady flow, acoustic oscillation problem was calculated, and supersonic premix flame of $H_2$-air reaction problem which is calculated with turbulence model, 9-species/18-reaction step reaction model, shows reasonable agreement with the previous results. As a result, the preconditioning method has an advantage to calculate incompressible and compressible flow through one code and preconditioned solver easily developed from standard compressible code with minor efforts. But additional computational time and computer memory is required due to preconditioning matrix.

  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested for the axial gap ratio (${\delta}$) of the supersonic turbine that is the one of the turbine design parameter. Firstly, the flow was visualized by a single pass Schlieren system. Next, total and static pressure of the cascade were measured by a pressure scanning system. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine were observed.
