A Study on Strengthening Competitiveness of a State-owned Shipping Enterprise - A Case of Vinalines Corporation in Vietnam -

  • The overall purpose of this paper is to conduct research on alternatives for strengthening the competitiveness of a state-run shipping company, Vinalines Corporation, the largest shipping and maritime enterprise in Vietnam. The first section of the introduction gives a panoramic overview of the current development situation of the Vietnam maritime industry and Vinalines. After summarizing a literature review in section 2, some alternatives are proposed in sections 3 and 4 to overcome the current difficulties of Vinalines and to improve the corporation's competitiveness for sustainable development by utilizing linear optimization and financial analysis. The final section presents a summary and recommendation for future study. It is concluded that privatization is the key solution for every problem faced by the corporation at present. Furthermore, modification of laws, restructuring of enterprise governance, financial situation, and fleet are also extremely necessary.

A Study on Operational Efficiency Analysis on the Value of Chinese Shipping Companies

  • Shipping companies are key components of the logistics industry, which is extremely significant in enhancing the country's comprehensive national power and promoting global trade development. In the context of the implementation of the new development pattern strategy in China and the impact of the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19), this paper takes 22 Chinese shipping listed companies as the research object and analyses the operational efficiency of them from 2011 to 2020 based on the Super-SBM DEA Model and Window DEA Model. Factors affecting the efficiency are further analyzed with the Tobit model. The research conclude that the operational efficiency of Chinese shipping companies as a whole shows a steady increase from 2011 to 2020. Although most of them are in a relatively ef ective operation state, fewer are absolutely effective companies. Besides efficiency among companies differs obviously, which indicates the potential of further improvement and promotion. What's more, factors such as current economic development level, enterprise size, human resources quality and enterprise turnover speed have significant positive correlation to the operation efficiency of Chinese shipping listed companies, which is significant to improve the operation efficiency of Chinese shipping companies.

  • Currently, container transport services play a substantial role in global cargo transportation, by serving as an intermodal between exporter and importer. Container shipping has become increasingly important over the past few decades, due to obvious advantages. However, Vietnam's container market has shown severely ongoing competition among numerous domestic and foreign shipping lines, resulting in serious consequences occurring such as freight rates substantially decreasing within the last 10 years. Vietnam's sea lanes have become more defensive, to cover losses of shipping companies. Selection of criteria for competitive evaluation of container transport companies is necessary, to facilitate addressing the problems within the enterprise, especially relating to its position in the market and from here, business management can implement strategic plans and reasonable policy, to survive and grow.

Selection of criteria for competitive evaluation of container transport companies is necessary to help recognize the problems within the enterprise especially relating to its position in the market and from here, business management are able to put strategic plans in place and reasonable policy in order to be able to survive and grow.

  • Total Quality Management(TQM) is the source of competitive advantage for the enterprise faced with the dynamic change of the environment as the customer satisfaction era, unlike the past marketing era. It can have an effect on the strategical choice of the enterprise and becomes a new spotlight of management strategy in business administration recently with various techniques of organizational innovation, such as business re-engineering, benchmarking and so on. The TQM which has an essential part of a Risk Response Process is recognized as strategic aspects in Risk Management. TQM means the total management system that realizes management philosophy of customer satisfaction through continuous improvement and innovational thoughts on the basis of top-management's leadership and employees' involvement, policy of quality management, customer focus, development of human resources, empowered work forces, and supplier relationships. The data investigating the business performance effect of active factors in TQM based on the shipping firms were collected from 250 shipping firms in Korea by the use of questionnaire method and personal interviews at the selected samples.

선단구성을 위한 초기배선 (Initial Ship Allocation for the Fleet Systematization)

  • The economical property of a shipping enterprise, as well as other transportation industries, is determined by the difference between the freight earned and expense paid. This study can be regarded as a division of optimizing ship allocation to routes under the integrated port transport system. Fleet planning and scheduling require complicated allocations of cargoes to ships and ships to routes in order to optimize the given criterion function for a given forecast period. This paper deals with the optimum ship allocation problem minimizing the operating cost of ships in a shipping company. Optimum fleet operating for a shipping enterprise is very important, since the marine transportation is a form of large quantity transport requiring long-term period, and there is a strong possibility to bring about large amount of loss in operation resulting from a faulty ship allocation. Where there are more than one loading and discharging ports, and a variety of ship's ability in speed, capacity, operating cost etc., and when the amount of commodities to be transported between the ports has been determined, then the ship's schedule minimizing the operating cost while satisfying the transport demand within the predetermined period will be made up. First of all a formula of ship allocation problems will be established and then will be constructed to solve an example by the Integer Programming application after consideration of the ship's ability, supply and demand of commodity, amount of commodity to be transported, operating costs of each ship etc. This study will give good information on deciding intention for a ship oprator or owner to meet the computerization current with shiping management.

광양항의 컨테이너터미널 운영사와 해운선사간의 상호리스크 관리방안 연구 (A Study on the Mutual Risk Management Between Container Terminal Operator and Shipping Company in Gwangyang Port)

  • 항만에서 상호리스크관리는 항만서비스를 제공하는 터미널 운영사와 항만서비스를 사용하는 해운선사간의 기업경영의 운영측면에서 상호이익을 도모하기 위해 중요하다. 본 연구는 상호 윈-윈 전략이 될 수 있는 상호리스크 관리방안을 통하여 국적선사와 항만산업체의 경쟁력을 확보하는데 기여하고자 수행되었다. 광양항의 터미널 운영사별로 해운선사에 대한 리스크 요인 및 리스크관리 개선점을 도출하고, 광양항 입항 해운선사별로 터미널 운영사별 리스크 요인 및 리스크관리 개선점을 도출하여 터미널 운영사와 해운선사간의 리스크에 의한 손실을 감소시키면서 상호이익을 도모하는 리스크 사전인식모델과 리스크 예방모델 등 두가지 종류의 관리모델을 제시하였다. 제시된 관리모델은 광양항의 컨테이너터미널과 해운선사간의 상호리스크 요인에 의한 손실을 파악하고 사전인식을 통해 리스크를 관리하기 위한 리스크 사전인식모델과 리스크에 의한 손실을 예방하기 위한 리스크 예방모델로 구성되며, 사전인식을 통한 관리와 예방을 통한 관리를 동시에 수행하도록 수립하였다. 이를 통하여 광양항 컨테이너터미널 운영사와 해운선사 상호간의 리스크에 의한 손실을 최소화시키면서, 운영의 효율성을 높일 수 있는 논리적 근거를 마련하고자 하였다.

DEA모형을 이용한 국적선사의 경영효율성 분석 -접대비와 광고·선전비를 중심으로- (Data Envelopment Analysis of the Management Efficiency of National Shipping Enterprises in South Korea -Chiefly on the Corporate Entertainment and Advertisement Cost-)

  • 본 연구는 자료포락분석법(DEA)을 이용하여 기업의 경영관리비용인 접대비, 광고 선전비, 인건비를 중심으로 국내 해운기업의 경영효율성을 평가하고자 하였다. 분석의 대상은 2010년부터 2014년까지 국내증시에 상장된 해운기업이다. 투입변수로 접대비, 광고 선전비, 인건비를 설정하였으며 산출변수는 매출액과 당기순이익으로 하였다. 본 연구에서는 기술효율성, 순수기술효율성, 규모효율성 및 규모수익을 도출하였으며 비효율 DMU의 효율성 개선방안을 제시하였다. 효율성 측정 결과 CCR모형의 기술효율성 분석에서 6개의 DMU와 BCC모형의 순수기술효율성 분석에서 8개의 DMU가 효율적인 상태인 것으로 나타났다. 규모의 수익측면에서는 전체 DMU의 24%인 6개의 DMU가 규모수익체증상태이며, 전체 DMU의 52%인 13개 DMU가 규모수익체감상태인 것으로 나타났다. 기술효율성 분석결과 복수의 효율적인 상태의 DMU가 존재하여 초효율성 분석을 실시한다. 본 연구에서는 초효율성 분석 결과 가장 효율성이 높은 DMU의 효율성 수준은 1.314, 다음은 1.243으로 나타났다. 이는 광고 선전비, 접대비, 인건비 투입에서 각각 31.4%, 24.3% 증가시키더라도 현재의 효율적인 상태를 유지할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구는 해운기업의 접대비와 광고 선전비, 인건비의 효율성을 평가하고, 초효율성 분석을 통해 의사결정단위의 순위를 파악하였으며 비효율 의사결정단위의 비효율성 개선을 위한 목표치를 제시하였다는데 의의가 있다.
