In this study, we conducted resistance and propulsion performance test of ship composed of the Resistance Test, Propeller Open Water Test and Self Propulsion Test using the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). We used commercial RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation) solver, as a calculating tool. The unstructured grids were used in a bow and stern of ship, having complex shape, for a convenience of generating grids, and the structured grids were adopted in a central hull and rest of hull having a relatively simple shape which is called hybrid grid method. In addition, The sliding mesh method was adopted to rotate a propeller directly in the Propeller Open Water and Self Propulsion Test. The Resistance Test and Self Propulsion Test were calculated using Volume of Fluid (VOF) model and considering a free surface. And all The three cases were applied realizable k-epsilon model as the turbulence model. The results of calculations were verified for the suitability of calculations by comparing MOERI's EFD results.
In recent, shipping companies have made an enormous effort to improve the operation of vessel in various approaches, due to recession of shipping market and increasing competition among shipping companies. One of important parameters for improving the efficiency of vessel is the resistance performance that consist of friction and residual resistance. Especially, it is recognized that the friction resistance tends to be affected by conditions of vessel’s surface and occupies approximately 70~90% of the total resistance for slow speed ships. In general, the surface of vessel is covered with various type of paint to reduce fouling and corrosion. As time goes by, however, it is so hull roughness would be increased by fouling over the wetted surface that anti-fouling paints, such as CDP(Controlled Depletion Paint), Tin-Free SPC(Self Polishing Co-polymer) or Foul Release, are applied evenly on the hull surface. Nevertheless, these anti-fouling paints could not prevent fouling absolutely. A fundamental study on evaluating ship resistance performance variation due to hull roughness has been performed using a commercial software, Star-CCM+, which solves the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible and viscous flow. The results of present simulation for plate are compared with some experimental data available and the effect of surface roughness to ship resistance performance is discussed.
The appearance of CSR changes the concept of the hull form design as well as structural design, since the application of CSR inevitably brings the lightweight increase of a ship. Keeping the original design constraints such as principal particulars, deadweight, and speed performance, designers have to increase the volume of the hull form. As a result, the entrance angle at bow end should become larger, which results in blunter waterline shape. For a slow and full ship having high $C_B$ more than 0.85, a new concept of bow shape has been required to alleviate the increase of wave-making resistance, since it is very difficult to improve waterline and frameline shape for such a full ship. In this paper a new bow shape of Capesize Bulk Carrier was developed to improve its wave-making characteristics without incompliance with the design constraints. For loading manual calculation, NAPA software was used. FLUENT6.3.26 and WAVIS1.4 were used to evaluate resistance performance of the subject hull forms. The newly designed hull form was tested at SSPA model basin for the final confirmation of resistance and propulsion performance of the ship. It was found that the new bow shape of a Capesize Bulk Carrier improved the resistance characteristics greatly compared to a conventional bulbous bow. The other benefits of new bow shape on the manufacturability were also investigated.

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, dubbed SNUFOAM, was developed to predict the performance of ship resistance using a CFD tool kit with open source libraries. SNUFOAM is based on a pressure-based cell-centered finite volume method and includes a turbulence model with wall functions. The mesh sensitivity, such as the skewness and aspect ratio, was evaluated for the convergence. Two wall functions were tested to solve the turbulent flow around a ship, and the one without the assumption of the equilibrium state between turbulent production and dissipation in the log law layer was selected. The turbulent flow around a ship simulated using SNUFOAM was compared to that by a commercial CFD code, FLUENT. SNUFOAM showed the nearly same results as FLUENT and proved to be an alternative to commercial CFD codes for the prediction of ship resistance performance.

Ice resistance is defined as the time average of all longitudinal forces due to ice acting on the ship. Estimation of ship's resistance in ice-covered waters is very important to both designers and shipbuilders since it is closely related to propulsion of a ship and it determines the engine power of the ship. Good ice performance requires ice resistance should be as low as possible to allow different manoeuvres. In this paper, different numerical methods are presented to calculate ice resistance, including semi-analytical method and empirical methods. A model test of an icebreaking vessel that was done in an ice basin has been introduced for going straight ahead in level ice at low speed. Then the comparison between model test results and numerical results are made. Some discussions and suggestions are presented as well to provide an insight into icebreaking vessel design at early stage.
This paper introduces a study on ship performance in waves to consider the effects of added resistance in the early stage of hull-form design. A ship experiences a loss of speed in actual seaways, hence this study proposes the overall procedure of a new design concept that takes into account the hydrodynamic performance of ship in waves. In the procedure, the added resistance is predicted using numerical methods: slender-body theory and Maruo's far-field formulation, since these methods are efficient in initial design stage, and an empirical formula is adopted for short waves. As computational models, KVLCC2 hull and Supramax bulk carrier are considered, and the results of added resistance and weather factor for test models are discussed. The computational results of vertical motion response and added resistance of KVLCC2 hull are compared with the experimental data. In addition, the sensitivity analysis of added resistance and weather factor for KVLCC2 hull to the variations of ship dimensions are conducted, and the change of the added resistance and propulsion factors after hull form variations are discussed.
The initial hull form of a 100 tan, 45 knot class high-speed craft is newly developed. The resistance performances are investigated using a model test at high speed in a circulating water channel. The effect of the initial trim is studied together. Wave patterns are observed to clarify the relationship between the resistance performance and the wave characteristics. It can be found that the initial trim plays a role in increasing the resistance performance above a certain velocity.
A series of model testes on a container ship in regular were executed. This paper presents the results of resistance, self-propulsion, and ship motion tests. The experimental results of ship motion measured on a towed model and a self-propelled model were compared with those of Japanese's model test showing fairly good agreements. The results of added resistance tests were compared with those of Japanese' model test and also compared with the calculation results by Gerritsma's method showing somewhat large discrepancies at higher speeds. Also the results of added resistance tests measured on a fixed model were compared with the calculation results by Gerritsma's method. Finally the results of self-propulsion tests were presented.

In the present study, we conducted resistance test, propeller open water test and self-propulsion test for a ship's resistance and propulsion performance, using computational fluid dynamics techniques, where a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver was employed. For convenience of mesh generation, unstructured meshes were used in the bow and stern region of a ship, where the hull shape is formed of delicate curved surfaces. On the other hand, structured meshes were generated for the middle part of the hull and the rest of the domain, i.e., the region of relatively simple geometry. To facilitate the rotating propeller for propeller open water test and self-propulsion test, a sliding mesh technique was adopted. Free-surface effects were included by employing the volume of fluid method for multi-phase flows. The computational results were validated by comparing with the existing experimental data.
A series of model tests on a container ship in waves was executed at the Experimental Towing Tank of Ship Research Station, KIMM. This paper presents the results of resistance, self-propulsion, propeller open-water and ship motion tests in regular head waves. Firstly, the experimental results of ship motion measured on a towed model and a self-propelled model were compared with those of Japanese results showing fairly good agreements. Secondly, the results of resistance and propulsion tests were analyzed and the data of added resistance, thrust increase, torque increase, revolution increase and self-propulsion factors in waves were presented. Also the diffraction force measured on a fixed model in waves was analyzed. Finally, this report shows the propeller characteristics in calm water based on propeller immersion and in regular waves based on wave length.
