A damage analysis simulator, which is applicable for evaluating the residual strength of damaged ship, was developed in this paper. For this process, CDM (Continuum Damage Mechanics) approach has been implemented to the simulator by virtue of the numerical technique for evaluation of crack initiation and/or enlargement. A damage calculation program has been linked with a commercial finite element analysis code (NASTRAN) and a ultimate strength evaluation program (LSAP) in order to assess residual strength of damaged ship. As a results of series calculation for the frigate model, giving the quantitative structural damage to the ultimate strength evaluation, a residual strength with damage is predicted to be at least 70 percentage lower than the case of intact condition. It was found that the proposed technique can be used as a design support tool in the field of simulation based ship design.
This study aims to establish a mathematical formula to provide rapid and safety estimation of the damaged double hull tankers under ship-ship collision. Difference in heights between the striking and struck ships 'h' and penetration depth 'x' were considered as the main parameters. In ship-ship interaction, Large oil tankers are selected as target struck vessels, and they are struck by Very Large Crude-Oil Carrier (VLCC) class oil tanker. The residual strength of damaged ship at several locations and collision scenarios were carried out using Intelligent Supersize Finite Element Method (ISFEM) which considers the progressive collapse behavior of ship hulls strength. Based on these results, satisfactory was achieved and empirical formula was successfully established using the regression analysis method by deploying the height difference 'h' and penetration depth 'x' as the observed parameters.
The aim of this study is to develop a rapid calculation technique of the residual strength in order to prevent sequential events under grounding accidents. Very Large Crude-Oil Carrier (VLCC), Suezmax, and Aframax double hull oil tankers carrying large quantities of crude oil were selected for target structures. The rock geometries are chosen from the published regulation by Marine Pollution Treaty (MARPOL) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Oceanic rocks as the most frequently encountered obstruction with ships are applied in this work. Damage condition was predicted using ALPS/HULL program based on grounding scenario with selected parameters, i.e. depth of penetration, damage location and tanker type. The results of the scenarios are quantified to form an empirical formula which can evaluate the residual strength. The proposed formula is validated by applying a series of random grounding scenarios.

This study compares the Residual ultimate longitudinal strength - grounding Damage index (R-D) diagrams produced by two analysis methods: the ALPS/HULL Intelligent Supersize Finite Element Method (ISFEM) and the design formula (modified Paik and Mansour) method - used to assess the safety of damaged ships. The comparison includes four types of double-hull oil tankers: Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax and VLCC. The R-D diagrams were calculated for a series of 50 grounding scenarios. The diagrams were efficiently sampled using the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) technique and comprehensively analysed based on ship size. Finally, the two methods were compared by statistically analysing the differences between their grounding damage indices and ultimate longitudinal strength predictions. The findings provide a useful example of how to apply the ultimate longitudinal strength analysis method to grounded ships.
Current industrial practices and approaches are simplified and do not describe the actual behavior of plated elements of offshore topside structures for safety design due to fires. Therefore, it is better to make up for the defective methods with integrated fire safety design methods based on fire resistance characteristics such as residual strength capacity. This study numerically investigates the residual strength of steel stiffened panels exposed to hydrocarbon jet fire. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses (FEAs) were carried out with varying probabilistic selected exposures in terms of the jet fire location, side, area, and duration. These were used to assess the effects of exposed fire on the residual strength of a steel stiffened panel on a ship-shaped offshore structure. A probabilistic approach with a feasible fire location was used to determine credible fire scenarios in association with thermal structural responses. Heat transfer analysis was performed to obtain the steel temperature, and then the residual strength was obtained for the credible fire scenarios under compressive axial loading using nonlinear FEA code. The results were used to derive closed-form expressions to predict the residual strength of steel stiffened panels with various exposure to jet fire characteristics. The results could be used to assess the sustainability of structures at risk of exposure to fire accidents in offshore installations.
The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transversal residual stress at the thick weldment of large container ship. In order to do it, the variables used for this study were restraint degree, yield strength of base material, thickness of weldment and welding heat input. Here, the level of restraint degree at the thick weldment of container ship having the various welding sequence was calculated using FEA. From the result, the h-type specimen was designed to simulate the level of restraint degree at the actual weldment of containership. With H-type test specimen designed, the effect of the variables on the distribution of transversal residual stress at the weldment in a container ship was evaluated using the comprehensive FEA. Based on the results, the predictive equations of mean value and the distribution of transverse residual stress in each location of residual stress were established using dimensional analysis and multiple-regression method. The validation of predictive equations was verified by comparing with measured results by XRD in the actual weldment of the ship.
This paper estimates the residual longitudinal strength of a damaged double hull VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) under combined vertical and horizontal bending moments using Smith's method. The damage estimated in this study occurred due to collision or grounding accidents. The effects of the randomness of the yield stress, plate thickness, extent of damage, and the combination of these three parameters on the ultimate hull girder strength were investigated. Random variables were generated by a Monte Carlo simulation and applied to the double hull VLCC described by the ISSC (International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress) 2000 report.

This study aims to assess fatigue property by the static overload and average load in the fillet welded joints which is on the ship structural steel having gusset welds. To this end, a small specimen was made, to which the same welding condition for the actual ship structure was applied, to perform fatigue tests. In this study, a method to simply assess changes in welding residual stress according to different static overload was suggested. By measuring actual strain at the weld toe, the weld stress concentration factor and property which is determined by recrystallization in the process of welding were estimated to investigate the relation between overload and fatigue strength.
Welding inevitably introduces the residual stresses which affect the fatigue strength of the joint structure. The mitigation of fatigue strength depends on the residual stress magnitude and distribution. Stress relief analyses are of practical interest for all cyclic loaded welded structures, such as ships and offshore structures. In order to estimate the effects of relaxation of residual stresses in the welded structure, this paper presents a finite element analysis procedure and experimental results for the welded structure. Cruciform specimens joint by MAG welding have been tested to measure the released stress. Relieved welding residual stresses obtained by finite element analysis are compared with those measured by experiment.
