  • The teleconnections between El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and droughts in Korea and the continental United States(U.S.) are investigated using cross analysis. For this purpose, monthly ENSO data and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) for Korea and for seven states in the U.S. are used. This study shows that there are significant statistical associations between ENSO indices and PDSI for Korea; however, the associations are very weak. It is found that dry conditions in Korea are positively correlated with El Nino, while wet conditions with La Nina. SOI, SSt in the Nino 4 and Ship track 6 regions among ENSO indices are more strongly correlated with PDSI than the other ENSO indices when using the original standardized data, but the SST Nino 3, SST Nino 4, and Darwin SSP exhibit abetter correlations with PDSI when using filtered data to be removed autocorrelation components of the original standardized data. The response time lag for maximum correlation between ENSO indices and PDSI appears to be affected by filtering the data. This is expecially true for Korea than for state analyzed in U.S. In addition, it is found that the PDSI in the continental U.S. is more strongly correlated wiht ENSO than in Korea. Furthermore, in analyzing the El Nino and La Nina aggregate composite data, it is found that the dry anomalies in Korea occur from the year following El Nino to about tow years after while the wet anomalies occur from La Nina year for a period of about two years.

  • This paper is the analysis of the relationship between RQD and decay constant, blasting vi bration constant of cube root scaling and square root scaling, through experimental blast ins test in subway construction for excavation of shaft hole by bottom blasting. The magnitude of particle velocity is largely effected by the distance from blasting source, the maximum charge per delay and the properties of ground. In order to verify the effects of ground properties on blast-induced vibration, the relation-ship between magnitude of blasting vibration and Rock Quality Disignation which stands for joint property was studied. The results of test are verified that blasting vibration constant "K" and the absolute value("n") of decay constant relatively increse as RQD increased. According to the result, it can be predict the particle velocity by the blast -induced vibration in bottom blasting pattern.om blasting pattern.

  • For the preliminary stages of ship design it is necessary to develop a basic design, which specifies the main particulars of the vessel. based on the requirements given by the owner. An efficient design enables the shipyard to make a rough estimate of the construction costs and to put forward a favourable quote during the call for tenders. The parametric determination of the main particulars of the vessel involves the application of empirical formulae. These formulae have been created after detailed tests and research by maritime research institutions and researchers had been carried out. Here, the design of a medium sized Bulk Carrier (26000t dwt) with a service speed of 17 knots for carrying rice and rock phosphate has been illustrated. Medium sized Bulk Carriers (25,000t dwt - 50,000t dwt) are in steady demand among small shipping companies. They have a size advantage, in that port size restrictions do not affect their design tremendously. Nevertheless, structurally. they are one of the most difficult to build. During design, the rules of the maritime regulatory bodies were strictly adhered to.

  • The electronic element the damage occurs with radiation being bombed. In order applies in the artificial satellite or the space ship therefore from the within has radiation introspection the use of the radiation electronic element is essential. Transient radiation tests performed for the first time in Korea evaluation data database (DB) was constructed to. Web-based materials in the DB is designed to be able to search and update, and existing foreign (NASA, ESA) for a total of 695 species, including public sources of data has been entered. Search DB than the existing foreign DB is an efficient and practical.

  • Lately old LNG carriers increased and ship price is getting down. So Interest for reuse and modification of used LNG carriers is growing. Also the needs for replacement of old power plant is increasing. Additionally eco friendly fuel such as LNG become attractive. Consequently gas power plant is getting much more popular than before. So in this research planning, we consider the floating power plant by modifying LNG carriers. This plant has the various function including storage, power plant and bunkering fuction etc. Through this multifunctional plant, we are ready for the old power plant shutdown and energy crisis in the future when we can supply the urgent mobile floating power plant quickly in time.

  • According to the increasing attention to safety and security in maritime shipping, there are diverse security systems in international logistics activities. Although prior studies on maritime transport and port security reviewed security policy and practices in order to provide useful insights for strategic agenda, a few focused on attitude to respond it. Moreover, there are no prior study on a comparative study between continents. To tackle this, this paper compared confrontation attitude to maritime transport and port security between South Korea and European Union. Results identified that maritime shipping security incorporates container cargo security management, logistics security management, logistics security certificate system, and environmental impacts management caused by maritime shipping. Further, the comparison between two countries suggests that South Korea need to take more positive attitude to respond, such as investment in equipment and technologies for maritime shipping security, construction of comprehensive management system, political supports for logistics security, and training and education for safety and security. The results provide useful insights for strategic review of security systems in South Korea, and to help strategic agenda for future improvement.

  • World leading company and research centers have invested much cost and effort into a PLM and digital manufacturing field to obtain their own competitiveness. We have been trying to apply a digital manufacturing, especially simulation to ship production process as a part of PLM implementation for a shipyard. A shipbuilding production system and processes have a complexity and a peculiarity different from other kinds of production systems. So, new analysis and modeling methodology is required to implement digital shipyard. which is a digital manufacturing system for a shipbuilding company. This paper suggests an analysis and simulation modeling methodologies for an implementation of a digital shipyard. New methodologies such as a database-merged simulation, a distributed simulation, a modular simulation with a model library and a 3-tire simulation framework are developed.

  • The design and construction of special purpose vessels such as drillship and shuttle tankers have been increased. These vessels install the DPS(dynamic positioning systems) to maintain the position and heading for long-time operation. This paper deals with the experimental method for model-based DP system and the control theory and filter algorithms. In this experiment, the length of model ship is 4 meters and it has three thrusters to maintain the position. The ability of tracking along the given course and keeping of heading in waves are confirmed. For the calculation of thruster input the PID control theory are adopted and the effects of PID gain were investigated. To estimate the low frequency motions Kalman filter and digital filter were used and their effects were investigated.

  • This study is intended to outline the lessons that can be learned from European experience of the opportunities and challenges involved in operating train ferries to carry freight. The study considers the various train ferry routes that have operated over recent years in Europe, examines their characteristics, and then proceeds to evaluate the economic viability of train ferries in general. On the basis of this analysis, we have attempted to outline the conditions that appear to be required under which Train Ferries may be competitive. This study shows that long crossing train ferries in Europe have survived where the adjacent railway systems handle a significant volume of domestic traffic and do themselves playa serious role in the transport industry. There is no reason to suppose railway wagons cannot be carried economically over long distances. Experience in Western Europe is that they are best operated as mixed road trailer and rail wagon services. Only the lower deck need carry railway wagons, which greatly simplifies loading and the physical construction of the ship. Existing road based ro-ro ferries can be adapted to become rail ferries. It is, however, essential that there is commercial clarity as to the responsibility for ensuring the overall service is viable. To that end, the ferry company is responsible for marketing the service and managing relationships between the two railway authorities.
