  • There have been several problems in treating shipbard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. Afore than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.

  • In the past, regional pilot service is provided by individual pilots directly on board each ship, but it will be difficult to provide this type of service in the near future when autonomous vessels are activated. This can be seen as the need for automation and intelligence of pilot service and provision of remote control system. In this paper, we propose a method, system, and service target that can carry out the electronic pilot service through the intelligence aids to navigation for smart port operation.

  • A control system for an automated line heating process is developed by use of object-oriented methodology. The main function of the control system is to provide real-time heating information to technicians or automated machines. The information includes heating location, torch speed, heating order, and others. The system development is achieved by following the five steps in the object-oriented procedure. First, requirements are specified and corresponding objects are determined. Then, the analysis, design, and implementation of the proposed system are sequentially carried out. The system consists of six subsystems, or modules. These are (1) the inference module with an artificial neural network algorithm, (2) the analysis module with the Finite Element Method and kinematics analysis, (3) the data access module to store and retrieve the forming information, (4) the communication module, (5) the display module, and (6) the measurement module. The system is useful, irrespective of the heating sources, i.e. flame/gas, laser, or high frequency induction heating. A newly developed automated line heating machine is connected to the proposed system. Experiments and discussions follow.

  • This paper deals with the design and development of the motorized valve control system using CANopen protocol. The CAN network protocol is used in the physical layer(layer 1) and data link layer(layer 2), and other upper network layer above that layer 1 and 2 utilize the CANopen protocol in this paper. The motorized valve controller is implemented by a PIC microprocessor, and the server application software for the control system user is written in C# language. In particular the CANopen protocol is widely used int the area such as ship automation systems and marine transportation systems. The experimental result of the proposed control system implemented in this paper is evaluated via real-time experiments, which works well as designed.

  • In the context of auto-landing containers from a container ship to a truck or automatic guided vehicle and vice versa, this research investigates three schemes, one in Part I and two in Part II, for measuring the absolute position of a container. Coordinate transformations between the reference-coordinate, sensor-coordinate, and body-coordinate systems are briefly discussed. The scheme explored in Part I aims the use of three laser-slit sensors, which are relatively inexpensive. In this case, nine nonlinear equations are formulated for six unknown variables (three for orientation and three for position), so a closed-form solution is not available. Instead, an approximate solution through linearization was derived. An advantage of the method in Part I is its ability to measure an absolute position in 3D space, while a disadvantage is the computation time required to obtain pseudo-inverses and the approximate nature of the obtained solution. Numerical examples are provided.

  • It has been used many kinds of horizontal butt-welding methods at block-to-block erection stage in shipbuilding companies. For examples, some companies use conventional FCA W process with one side or both sides groove joint welding, others use carriage with torch holder type mechanized welding method. Although lots of efforts were done until now, some problems in quality and productivity still remain in ship's hull welding. In this study, we have attempted to raise productivity and quality on horizontal position of welding with following 3 items. 1) Prepare groove condition with no root gap for making easy fit-up work. 2) Develop improved MAG (100% $CO_2$ gas shielding) welding process with solid wire for making sound root bead from one side. 3) Develop and apply quite new automatic welding carriage. The stability of new welding process was confirmed by conducting mechanical tests of weldments to verify the soundness of weldments.

  • The block assembly of ship consists of a certain type of heat processes such as cutting, bending welding residual stress relaxation and fairing. The residual deformation due to welding is inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the welding deformation tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding deformation. The validity of the prediction method must be also clarified through experiments. This paper proposes a simplified analysis method to predict the welding deformation of panel block structure. For this purpose, a simple prediction model for fillet welding deformations has been derived based on numerical and experimental results through the regression analysis. On the basis of these results, the simplified analysis method has been applied to some examples to show its validity.

  • Sculptured surface structures such as ship hulls are traditionally formed up to the required double curved shape by line heating method. The nature of the line heating process is a transient thermal process, followed by a thermo-elastic-plastic stress field. The permanant shape is dependent on many factors involved in the process, Among them are torch speed and path, supplied heat type and amount , and plate size. Thus, the work is essentially leaded by experts with lots of experiences. However, in order to effectively improve productivity through automation, each factor should be clearly examined how much it affects the final shape. This can not be done only by experiments, but can be achieved by a mechanics-based approach. In this paper, we propose a conceptual configuration for plate forming system, and then present simulations of the line heating process with numerical data in practices and suggest a computerized process of the line heating for practical applications. The modeling of heating torch, water cooling, and the plate to be formed is proposed for the finite element analysis after the mechanics of line heating is studied. Parametric studies are given and discussed for the effects of plate thickness, torch speed and initial curvature in forming a saddle typed surface.

  • An automatic pipe routing system is proposed and implemented. Generally, the pipe routing design as a part of the shipbuilding process requires a considerable number of man hours due to the complexity which comes from physical and operational constraints and the crucial influence on outfitting construction productivity. Therefore, the automation of pipe routing design operations and processes has always been one of the most important goals for improvements in shipbuilding design. The proposed system is applied to a pipe routing design in the engine room space of a commercial ship. The effectiveness of this system is verified as a reasonable form of support for pipe routing design jobs. The automatic routing result of this system can serve as a good basis model in the initial stages of pipe routing design, allowing the designer to reduce their design lead time significantly. As a result, the design productivity overall can be improved with this automatic pipe routing system.
