  • The mathematical models of hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a ship at low speed range should be established differently from the ones at nominal cruising speed range since a ship moves with large drift angle or rotates in a stationary position. We modified widely used Yoshimura's cross flow model in order to apply the system identification method to estimate parameters in the model. The apparatus and the procedure of free running model test were suggested so that the parameters in the model be estimated. The validity of our proposing modified model and test procedure was confirmed by comparison with the results of simulated model test.

  • The International Maritime Organization adopted the interim standards for ship maneuverability in November 1993 for preventing collision of ships at sea and for protecting the marine environment, and based on the accumulated data, in December 2002, the established standards for ship maneuverability were adopted. However, the standards adopted are those at full load, even keel, and at least 90 % of the ship speed at 85 % of the ship's maximum power. Moreover, these standards have limitations in providing information on maneuverability under actual navigational conditions. Therefore, in this study, frequency analysis AHP analysis techniques were studied by consulting navigational officers, captains, and experts, who have significant knowledge on ship maneuverability, utilization of the current standards, and the information necessary for the operation of the actual ship. The results of this study confirmed that the necessary information on maneuverability for the navigational officer operating the vessel is information about the turning circle at a small angle of 5°-10° and z-test information at maneuvering speed, not sea speed. Additionally, in relation to speed control, additional information on deceleration inertia and acceleration inertia is needed than the information on the stopping ability at sea speed and full loaded condition. The derived results are considered to be useful as basic data for preparing guidelines for ship maneuverability necessary for navigational of icers who operate ships.

  • With increasing ship's speed turnround and port time becomes a large percentage of total roundtrip time and this causes to accelerate the introduction of the various kind of modern handling equipment, the standardization of cargoes, and the improvement of the ship. However, it is still a drag on efficient operation of ship. Similarly, the turnround time at the container port is very important as a measure for the decision of the efficiency of port. To decrease operating coasts, the minimization of the time need to cargo handling at the ports of call must be achieved. Thus the optimization of the time need to cargo handling at the ports of call must be achieved. Thus the optimized Container Loading Plan is necessary, especially under the rapid speed of container operations. For the container loading plan, in this thesis, we use the hungarian method and the branch and bound method to get the initial disposition of both maximization of ship's GM and minimization of shift number to the obstructive container in a yard area. We apply the dynamic programming algorithm to get the final disposition for minimizing total turnroudn time and finally we analyzed the results to check whether the initial disposition is proper or not.

  • The economical property of a shipping enterprise, as well as other transportation industries, is determined by the difference between the freight earned and expense paid. This study can be regarded as a division of optimizing ship allocation to routes under the integrated port transport system. Fleet planning and scheduling require complicated allocations of cargoes to ships and ships to routes in order to optimize the given criterion function for a given forecast period. This paper deals with the optimum ship allocation problem minimizing the operating cost of ships in a shipping company. Optimum fleet operating for a shipping enterprise is very important, since the marine transportation is a form of large quantity transport requiring long-term period, and there is a strong possibility to bring about large amount of loss in operation resulting from a faulty ship allocation. Where there are more than one loading and discharging ports, and a variety of ship's ability in speed, capacity, operating cost etc., and when the amount of commodities to be transported between the ports has been determined, then the ship's schedule minimizing the operating cost while satisfying the transport demand within the predetermined period will be made up. First of all a formula of ship allocation problems will be established and then will be constructed to solve an example by the Integer Programming application after consideration of the ship's ability, supply and demand of commodity, amount of commodity to be transported, operating costs of each ship etc. This study will give good information on deciding intention for a ship oprator or owner to meet the computerization current with shiping management.

  • Recently several researches of high speed container ship and loading system are mainly accomplished in U.S.A. and Japan. Its shipping service is not realized but it is realized in near future. To effective use of the feature and efficiency of them, quay, loading/unloading. yard operation system, port management system and connection transport system must be well integrated and operated. Specially, loading /unloading speed of container crane is important for making effective use of them. To speed up loading/unloading system, RO-RO and LO-LO methods that are mostly exclusive system are studied on the container crane with special structure and mechanism to handle individual container or bundle of containers. In this paper these methods are shown. When new high speed loading system of container is desighed, the realistic constrains must be considered.

  • In this paper, calculation of towing force required to tow the ship and experiments to verify its appropriacy are discussed. Friction, wind and wave-making resistance of vessel are considered to calculate towing force of specified vessel. Propeller resistance is also reflected and it is assumed that the propellers are locked. Node analysis to estimate additional resistance on towline is applied. Total towing force could be obtained by adding the ship's resistance and towline resistance. Experiments with training ship SAE YU DAL was executed to check the effectiveness of calculation methods and some comparison between experiments and calculation results was also done. From the comparative analysis, we confirmed that towing speed is primary terms in the calculation of towing force and propeller resistance is a major elements of ship's resistance with the increasing of towing speed. We can see that additional resistance induced by yawing of ship during towing have to be considered for total tow resistance.

  • Marine casualties of vessel are serious problems on social and national aspects, because it results in sacrifice of lives, a great lose of properties and marine pollution. According to recent statistics of marine casualties of vessel, fishing boats are more likely to be ended in the casualty, and especially, small fishing boats cause much more accidents than any other big vessels. Most of marine casualties were caused by the human factors such as poor watch keeping, inadequate manoeuvering and negligent action for engine, etc. This study is intended to provide navigator of small fishing boat with a specific information of necessary to assist both the manoeuvering and the avoidance of capsizing. The manoeuvering characteristics of ship can be adequately judged by the results of typical ship trials manoeuvres. For this purpose, the author measured the roll responses of a small fishing boat in waves using the real sea experimental measuring system, and analyzed the experimental data by the statistical and spectral analyzing methods to get the characteristics of the roll motion responses of the small boat through the wave directions and the ship's speed.

  • A numerical method is developed for computing the free surface flows around a transom stern of a ship at a high Froude number. At high speed, the flow may be detached from the flat transom stern. In the limit of the high Froude number, the problem becomes a planning problem. In the present study, we make the finite-element computations for a transom stern flows around a wedge-shaped floating ship. The numerical method is based on the Hamilton's principle. The problem is formulated as an initial value problem with nonlinear free surface conditions. In the numerical procedures, the domain was discretized into a set of finite elements and the numerical quadrature was used for the functional equation. The time integrations of the nonlinear free surface condition are made iteratively at each time step. A set of large algebraic equations is solved by GMRES(Generalized Minimal RESidual, Saad and Schultz 1986) method which is proven very efficient. The computed results are compared with previous numerical results obtained by others.

  • Since 2020, according to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) amended in 2016, each Administration shall transfer the annual fuel consumption of its registered ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) after verifying them. The Administration needs stacks of materials, which must not be manipulated by ship companies, including the Engine log book and also bears an administrative burden to verify them by May every year. This study considers using the Automatic Identification System (AIS), mandatory navigational equipment, as an objective and efficient tool among several verification methods. Calculating fuel consumption using a ship's speed in AIS information based on the theory of a relationship between ship speed and fuel consumption was reported in several examples of relevant literature. After pre-filtering by excluding AIS records which had speed errors from the raw data of five domestic cargo vessels, fuel consumptions calculated using Excel software were compared to actual bunker consumptions presented by ship companies. The former consumptions ranged from 96 to 123 percent of the actual bunker consumptions. The difference between two consumptions could be narrowed to within 20 percent if the fuel consumptions for boilers were deducted from the actual bunker consumption. Although further study should be carried out for more accurate calculation methods depending on the burning efficiency of the engine, the propulsion efficiency of the ship, displacement and sea conditions, this method of calculating annual fuel consumption according to the difference between two consumptions is considered to be one of the most useful tools to verify bunker consumption.
