  • R's {shiny} package provides an environment for creating web applications with only R scripts. Shiny does not require knowledge of a separate web programming language and its development is very easy and straightforward. In addition, Shiny has a variety of extensibility, and its functions are expanding day by day. Therefore, the presentation of high-quality results is an excellent tool for R-based analysts. In this paper, we present actual cases of large data analysis using Shiny. First, geological anomaly zone is extracted by analyzing topographical data expressed in the form of contour lines by analysis related to spatial data. Next, we will construct a model to predict major diseases by 16 cities and provinces nationwide using weather, environment, and social media information. In this process, we want to show that Shiny is very effective for data visualization and analysis.

  • The facial skin condition expresses physical healthy as well as is considered one of important factors for attractiveness. Especially, most people prefer shiny skin. So various cosmetics has been manufactured for expression of shiny skin. However, shiny skin is subjectively evaluated, and difficult to evaluate clear shininess using the existing method in oily skin. Moreover, there is no clear classification criteria between shininess and glossiness, which is assessed negatively in the skin. So there has not been a reference value by mechanical measurement to define and classify shiny skin from greasy skin. In this study, we measured skin biophysical parameters (gloss, hydration, translucency and sebum) and facial images which are selected by volunteers using sensory evaluation. According to the measurement results, the values of gloss, sebum, and translucency were similar in both shiny and greasy skin; the values of sebum and gloss increased, whereas those of translucency decreased. However only skin moisture values statistically increased in shiny skin. In conclusion, we propose objective assessment criteria for classifying shiny and greasy skin using device measurement and quantitative assessment.

  • The further development of information, communication and digital media technologies requires the use of advanced, miniaturized semiconductor chips that operate at a high frequency. Die bonding and wire bonding methods for semiconductor packaging have been replaced by direct attachment to the substrate after forming a bump on the chip. However, the height of the bump or ball is an important factor for defects during assembly. This paper proposes an algorithm to measure the height of the bumps or balls in semiconductor packaging with greater accuracy. The performance of the proposed algorithm is experimentally validated. Non-contact 3D measurements of a shiny round ball is quite difficult, and it is not easy to obtain accurate data. This paper thus proposes an optical method and technique to improve the measurement accuracy.

  • Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has become a trend in the genomics research area. There are many software programs and automated pipelines to analyze NGS data, which can ease the pain for traditional scientists who are not familiar with computer programming. However, downstream analyses, such as finding differentially expressed genes or visualizing linkage disequilibrium maps and genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, still remain a challenge. Here, we introduce a dockerized web application written in R using the Shiny platform to visualize pre-analyzed RNA sequencing and GWAS data. In addition, we have integrated a genome browser based on the JBrowse platform and an automated intermediate parsing process required for custom track construction, so that users can easily build and navigate their personal genome tracks with in-house datasets. This application will help scientists perform series of downstream analyses and obtain a more integrative understanding about various types of genomic data by interactively visualizing them with customizable options.

  • Next generation sequencing (NGS), a high-throughput DNA sequencing technology, is widely used for molecular biological studies. In NGS, RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq), which is a short-read massively parallel sequencing, is a major quantitative transcriptome tool for different transcriptome studies. To utilize the RNA-Seq data, various quantification and analysis methods have been developed to solve specific research goals, including identification of differentially expressed genes and detection of novel transcripts. Because of the accumulation of RNA-Seq data in the public databases, there is a demand for integrative analysis. However, the available RNA-Seq data are stored in different formats such as read count, transcripts per million, and fragments per kilobase million. This hinders the integrative analysis of the RNA-Seq data. To solve this problem, we have developed a web-based application using Shiny, COEX-seq (Convert a Variety of Measurements of Gene Expression in RNA-Seq) that easily converts data in a variety of measurement formats of gene expression used in most bioinformatic tools for RNA-Seq. It provides a workflow that includes loading data set, selecting measurement formats of gene expression, and identifying gene names. COEX-seq is freely available for academic purposes and can be run on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux operating systems. Source code, sample data sets, and supplementary documentation are available as well.

  • With the development of information and communication technologies, the growing volume of data is increasing exponentially, raising interest in big data. As technologies related to big data have developed, big data is being collected, stored, processed, analyzed, and utilized in many fields. Big data analytics in the health care sector, in particular, is receiving much attention because they can also have a huge social and economic impact. It is predicted that it will be able to use Big Data technology to analyze patients' diagnostic data and reduce the amount of money that is spent on simple hospital care. Therefore, in this thesis, patient data is analyzed to present to patients who are unable to go to the hospital or caregivers who do not have medical expertise with close care guidelines. First, the collected patient data is stored in HDFS and the data is processed and classified using R, a big data processing and analysis tool, in the Hadoop environment. Visualize to a web server using R Shiny, which is used to implement various functions of R on the web.
