  • The streaming rays(SR) method is improved and extended to multigroup, anisotropic scattering, and three-dimensional angular space(x-y-z(infinite))problems. This method is applied to the shielding problems in which the ray effect occurs seriously. For verification, the results of MORSE-CG code are used as reference solution and the results of TWODANT code are compared. The results show that solutions of the SR method are much better than those of the TWODANT code and are in good agreement with those of the MORSE-CG code. Also, to reduce computing time, two acceleration algorithms are implemented in the SR method : the standard coarse-mesh rebalance and a new angular two-grid acceleration.

  • An investigation was conducted to find out the factors influencing on the impact toughness of austenitic-and duplex stainless steel weld metal. Various welding process with commerically available consumables was adopted to get weld doposited metal. The oxygen content of each weld metal was very sensitiive to welding process, involving flux composition, shielding gas and structural features. The results of this study show tat the content of oxygen as an oxide inclusion significantly affects impact toughness, and .delta.-ferrite distribution is also correlated with resultant toughness value.

  • A literature review was conducted to survey informations available on the welding metallurgy of aluminum alloys and its effect on fusion weldability, especially on solidification cracking and pore formation. Solidification cracking behavior of Al weld is a complicate matter as compared to other high alloys, where a relatively simple Fe-X(most detrimental elements S, P, B, Si, etc) binary diagram can be successfully applicable. Both additive and synergistic effects of elements should be considered together. A same element play a different role from system to system. Porosity, caused by hydrogen contamination of the weld is one of the most troublesome welding problems. The primary sources of hydrogen are believed to be an absorbed moisture on the filler metal or base metal and in the shielding gas. It is extremely important that reliable quality-control procedures be employed to eliminate all possible sources of hydrogen contamination. Selection of proper process and parameters is sometimes more important than controlling of alloying elements in order to make a defect-free weld.

  • On the basis of theoretical studies on the effect of the cylinders attached to semi-infinite screens, the tangential sound power-transport parallel to the surface of the attached cylinder is minimized by means of a secondary sound field, which is generated from a part of the attached cylinder. The numerical study shows the possibility of deflecting the incident sound by minimizing the acoustic surface impedance of the upper sections. The acoustical shadow region was more pronounced in both near- and far-field compared to the passive case with rigid surface, i.e. without active control. For a relatively wide frequency range it was possible to enhance shielding effects only with few secondary sources and error microphones. In this paper effects of some control parameters on the actively controlled sound field near the top edge of noise barriers are studied. Results of numerical study and model measurements are shown and discussed.

  • Arc metal spraying is a widely used method for improving the performance of construction structures such as corrosion resistance and electromagnetic wave shielding. However, when arc metal spraying is applied to a concrete structure, adhesion performance may deteriorate. Therefore, the effect of each surface treatment method on the physical properties between the arc metal spray coating and concrete was reviewed by evaluating the deposition efficiency and adhesion performance according to the arc metal spray surface treatment method (surface reinforcing agent, roughening agent, and sealing agent). As a result, it is suggested as an optimal surface treatment condition to induce non-interface failure by using a roughening agent and to improve the properties of concrete and metal coatings by applying a surface reinforcing agent and sealing agent.

  • During the operation of a nuclear power plant (NPP), the waste reactor vessel closure head (RVCH) that is replaced owing to design or manufacturing defects is buried in a designated area or temporarily stored in a radiation shielding facility within the NPP. In such cases, storing it for extended periods proves a challenge owing to space constraints in the power plant and a safety risk associated with radiation exposure; therefore, dismantling it quickly and safely is crucial. However, not much research has been done on the dismantling of the RVCH in an operational power plant. This study proposes a dismantling process based on the radioactive contamination level measured for the Kori #1 RVCH, which is currently being discarded and stored, and examines the decontamination and cutting according to this process. In addition, the amount of secondary waste and dismantling cost are evaluated, and the dismantling effect of the reactor closure head is analyzed.

  • In order to overcome the urban heat island effect, highly functional paint is attracting attention as a promising means by shielding heat on the structure (building) surface. When a paint was prepared containing nano-sized silica particles, the heat-insulating performance was relatively higher than that of paints with other sizes. In addition, developed paints showed enhanced properties such as chemical resistance and abrasion resistance test because of the presence of nano-sized silica included in functional paint.

  • Calcium sulfate(plaster of Paris) has been used in dental and orthopedic surgery for about 100 years. It is well known that the plaster is bioresorbable, biocompatible, defect conformable and moldable. The purpose of this study is to evaluate two effects of calcium sulfate on bone regeneration, that is, the effects of graft materials and barrier for bone regeneration. Cortical bone defects were formed for recipient site on the femurs of 19 Sprague-Dawley rats. The autogenous particulated bone and calcium sulfate were grafted to the defects. Calcium sulfate paste, $Gore-Tex^R$ membrane(W.L. GORE & ASSOCIATES LTD., U.S.A.) and rubber sheet were used for the shielding materials. The results were as follows : 1. Calcium sulfate that had been grafted in the cortical bone defect was almost resorbed before bone remodeling, resultantly had little effect on bone regeneration. 2. Resoption process of calcium sulfate grafted on the bone grafting area tends to be accelerated, as being divided into numerous small particles progressively. Under the situation where the calcium sulfate was protected, with the coverage of fascia, $Gore-Tex^R$ membrane or rubber sheet, new bone formation was confirmed with presence of calcium sulfate particles over 6 weeks after grafting. 3. In the case of calcium sulfate covered with membrane, distinct bone formation was observed on the marrow space of femur adjacent to the plaster mass. 4. Rubber shielded plaster group revealed new bone trabeculae under the rubber sheet, but it showed ischemic degeneration of superficial cortical bone.
