Bacterial quality evaluation on the shellfish-producing area along the south coast of Korea and suitability for the consumption of shellfish products therein

  • Background: To confirm whether shellfish are suitable for consumption, the quality of seawater and shellfish in shellfish-producing areas must be assessed regularly. This study was conducted to evaluate the bacterial quality on the Changseon area, containing a designated shellfish-producing area, in Korea during 2011-2013. Result: Even though many inland pollutants near the area were identified, they showed no significant impact on the designated area and the shellfish therein. The concentrations of fecal bacteria in all the seawater and mussel samples from the designated area during the harvesting season were within the standards of various countries. Pathogenic bacteria were not detected in any of the mussel samples. In our previous study, the hazardous metal levels in all the mussels from the same area were also within the limits of different countries. Conclusion: The mussel products in this area are suitable for consumption based on fecal pollution, pathogenic bacteria, and also heavy metals.

부산·경남 지역의 일부 패류에 함유된 마비성 패독에 관한 연구 (Bioassay on PSP in Some Shellfishes from Pusan and Kyungnam Area)

  • The authors carried out paralytic shellfish poison bioassay on the 9 kinds of shellfishes collected from Pusan and Kyungnam areas of Korea from April to July, 1986. The areas are the main producing district of fisheries in Korea and the samples were collected from their producing sites-natural, cultured and marketed. There were little or no PSP in the majority of the shellfishes, but 3 natural (Pusan Il-Kwang $700{\mu}g$, Koje Okpo $648{\mu}g$, Chungmoo Madong $124{\mu}g/100gm$ meat) and 1 marketed (Pusan Chakalchi $490{\mu}g/100gm$ meat) blue mussels contained relatively high PSP only in April. It is considered that there will be a possibility of paralytic shellfish poisoning, and control program for preventing the poisoning is necessary in Korea.

남해연안 골프장조성에 따른 해양환경영향평가 개선방안 (Improvement of Marine Environmental Impact Assessment for Golf Course Projects in Southern Coastal Area of Korea)

  • We evaluated the status and problems of golf course developments in the southern coast of Korea. It's adjacent waters supports nursery and fishing grounds for commercially-important fisheries species, and various sites are designated and protected as marine protection area(MPA), fisheries reserve, or clean area(blue belt) for producing shellfish. We proposed key assessment items for environmental impact assessment(EIA) and checklists in selecting golf course locations. For the protected areas, we suggest that it is essential to limit golf course establishment while setting a minimal distance from the coast to secure a buffer zone for mitigating the environmental impacts. To efficiently utilize existing regional coastal management plans, it is necessary to diagnose how a golf course development will potentially modify geomorphology and scenery, amplify pollutant loads from non-point sources, and disrupt the functions of coastal ecosystem. Especially, continued monitoring and assesssing input loads of hazardous materials originating from agricultural chemicals should be obligatory. Finally, measures for improving the QA/QC analysis were discussed to enhance reliability of environmental data with respect to golf courses and adjacent coastal waters.

항만 환경에서 식물플랑크톤 잠재적 위해종의 분포 (Distribution of potential risky species on phytoplankton at ports in Korea)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 국내 주요항에서 출현하는 식물플랑크톤 잠재적 위해종의 시 공간적 변화를 파악하고, 환경요인과의 관계를 이해하는데 있다. 부산, 울산, 인천 및 광양항에서 2007년 1월부터 12월까지 잠재적 위해종 및 환경요인을 계절별로 총 4회 조사하였다. 조사기간 중 출현한 잠재적 위해종은 총 25종으로, 이 중 적조 원인종이 20종이었으며 독소생산종이 5종이었다. 적조 원인종인 Skeletonema costatum은 전 조사 지역에서 우점종으로 나타났다. 이 종은 부산항에서 수소이온농도와 양의 상관관계를, 용존산소와 음의 상관관계를 보였고(p<0.05), 울산항에서는 부유물질과 수소이온농도와 양의 상관관계를, 염분과 음의 상관관계를 보였다(p<0.05). 또한, 광양항에서는 염분 및 질산염과 양의 상관관계를, 수소이온농도와 음의 상관관계를 보였고(p<0.05), 인천항에서는 질산염과 양의 상관관계를 보였다(p<0.01). 독소 생산종 중 기억상실성 패독인 도모익 산을 배출하는 것으로 알려진 Pseudo-nitzschia spp.는 전 조사지역에서 출현하였고, 질산염 및 규산염과 양의 상관관계를 보였다(p<0.05). 그리고 설사성 마비패독을 일으키는 Dinophysis acuminata 및 기억성 마비패독을 유발하는 Alexandrium spp.는 화학적 산소 요구량과 양의 상관관계를 보였다(p<0.01). 적조 원인종은 항구의 물리적 환경요인에 영향을 받은 반면 독소 생산종은 영양염류와 같은 화학적 요인에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.
