A non-linear numerical tidal model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is used to derive the mean and maximum bed stress the mean and maximum transport potential on the continental shelf. It has provided a preliminary assessment of relation between sediment transport paths and the mean and maximum bed stress distribution determined from the numerical model.
The faunal assembalges of macrobenthos and their habitat conditions on the soft-bottoms around Dokdo(Dok Island) was investigated using a box corer and a van Veen grab in Sept. 1999 and May 2000. The sediments in the slope sites were composed of sand particles and those in Ullneung Basin were mud. The sediments in the shelf sites were in the range of fine to medium sand. The organic content of the slope sediments was in the range of 1 to 2%. The macrobenthos occurred at the slope sites represented by 15faunal groups belonging to 8 phyla, and the major faunal group was polychaetous annelids. They comprised ca. 80.6% in slope sites, and 84.8% in shelf sites. Dominant species in the slope were Exogone verugera(40.9%), Cossura longocirrata (8.4%), Tharyx sp. (6.6%), Scalibregma inflatum (4.9%), Aedicira sp. (4.7%), Aricidea ramosa (3.8%), and Sigambra tentaculata (3.7%). Dominant species in the shelf were Chone sp. (49.3%), Tharyx sp. (18.4%), Ophelina acuminata (6.7%), Chaetozone setosa (3.8%), Glycera sp. (2.6%), and Aedicira sp. (2.4%). The mean densities of macrobenthos in the slope and shelf area were $2,028\;ind./m^2$ and $456\;ind./m^2$, respectively. The trophic composition of benthic polychaete worms in the slope area was different from that in shallow shelf area: surface deposit feeding worms were most abundant in slope area whereas filter feeding worms in shelf area. According to the cluster analysis and MDS plots, the spatial distribution of macrobenthos in Dokdo slope region was related with the sediment properties such as particle size and organic content. In the case of vertical distribution of macrobenthos in slope sites, most faunas concentrated in the upper sediment layer within 2cm depth.
A total of 116 surface sediment samples were obtained on the Yellow Sea and analyzed for grain size and geochemical elements in order to interpret the present sediment transportation. Thirty-nine cores and 3,070 line-km shallow seismic profiles are analyzed for sedimentary records of Yellow Sea in the past. Results show that the boundary of sediment transport between Korean side and Chinese side is about between $123^{\circ}E$ and $124^{\circ}E$. The similar result is produced from Shi et al. (in this publication). Two cyclonic patterns of surface sediments are recognized in the northeastern and southwestern Yellow Sea, while the strong front zone of the mud patch and sandy sediments are found in the southeastern Yellow Sea (the southwestern part of Korean coasts). The formation of fine-particle sediment packages, called for Northwest Mudbelt Deposit (NWMD), Hucksan Mudbelt Deposit (HSMD) and Jeju Mudbelt Deposit (JJMD), are resulted from eddies (gyres) of water circulations in the Yellow Sea. NWMD has been formed by cyclonic (anticlockwise) eddy. NWMD is composed of thick, homogeneous, relatively semi-consolidated gray clay-dominated deposit. On the other hand, HSMD and JJMD are formed by anticyclonic (clockwise) eddies. They are thick, homogeneous, organic-rich gray, silt-dominated deposit. Both core and surface sediments show that the middle zone across Chinese and Korean side contains bimodal frequency of grain-size distribution, indicating that two different transport mechanisms exist. These mud packages are surrounded by sand deposits from both Korea and China seas, indicating that Yellow Sea, which is the shallow sea and epicontinental shelf, is formed mostly by sand deposits including relict sands. The seismic profiles show such as small erosional/non-depositional channels, sand-ridges and sand-waves, Pleistocene-channelfilled deposits, a series of channels in the N-S major channel system, and thick Holocene sediment package, indicating that more complex sedimentary history exists in the Yellow Sea.
The coarse deposit with a lower mud content adjacent to the shelf of the southern East Sea is probably a "relict" sediment deposited in response to a lower stand of sea level during the Pleistocene. The sediment that developed on the slope and in the deep sea was river-borne primarily and was secondarily reworked or redistributed by the Tsushima Warm Current from the East China Sea. The clay mineralogy of the area suggests various sources of fine-grained sediment from adjacent rivers, the Korea Strait, volcanic material from Ulleung Island, and the Japan coast. Massive sand, bioturbated mud, homogeneous mud, and laminated mud were the dominant facies found in the core sediments from the study area. The massive sand was mainly volcanic ash from an eruption on Ulleung Island (9300 yr BP) and consisted of colorless pumiceous glass and a black scoriaceous type. The sedimentation rates on the slope, based on the Ulleung-Oki ash layer, were about 10cm/ky higher than in the basin. Other than the coarse-grain sediment, the mean size of the fine sediment dominating the bioturbated and homogeneous muds in the basin and the laminated mud on the slope was 6-10 phi. This indicates a difference in the major sedimentary process: hemipelagic sedimentation in the Ulleung Basin and mass flow deposition, such as turbidite, on the slope of the southern East Sea.
A study of heavy mineral sands in terms of heavy mineral group and concentration has been carried out by analyzing 88 grab samples from the continental shelf off the southeast coast of Korea. Heavy mineral groups seem to be outlined and classified into four regions in the study area: 1) the western region; high concentrations of stable minerals, such as opaque mineral, magnetite, garnet and ZTR, 2) Korean Trough region; moderate concentrations of stable minerals, 3) the eastern region; abundant altered mineral and amphibole with minor of pyroxene concentration, and 4) the northeastern shelf-break region; low concentration of stable minerals with abundant altered minerals. The sedimentologic natures of four major heavy mineral regions (groupings) seem to be influenced by physical, dynamic and hydraulic milieu and also aerial and/or subaqueous weathering processes. It seems to be, further, plausible that shallow marine waves and currents associated with neritic dynamic condition of transgressive sea might be very effective on the concentration and groupings (sorting) of heavy min-erals in the surficial sediments of the continental shelf. The pyroxene-abundant heavy mineral suite (group), in fact, seems to suggest a sediment source from Japanese Islands.

This study was carried out to investigate the benthic polychaetous community and benthic ecosystem quality status on the adjacent continental shelf of Jeju Island, and field surveys were conducted at 31 stations in July and August, 2020. The surface sediment was generally composed of muddy sand facies and sandy mud facies, and the average particle size was medium silt (6.1±1.6∅). The benthic polychaetous community revealed a total of 73 species with a mean density of 242 ind./m2. The major dominant species were Notomastus latericeus, Ampharete arctica and Onuphis shirikishinaiensis. By the cluster analysis and nMDS results based on species composition of the benthic polychaetous community, the study area was divided into three station groups arranged from east to west by the water depth and sedimentary facies. The station group located in the west was subdivided into two station groups from south to north. From results of correlation analysis and PCA, it was found that the benthic polychaetous community in the study area had a strong correlation with the sedimentary environment and water depth. The benthic faunal community (or ecosystem) on the adjacent continental shelf of Jeju Island was assessed to be in a healthy state by biotic indices such as AMBI and BPI.
A study on sedimentation, geochemical behavior and seismic stratigrapht of the continental shelf sediments along the Korea Strait and a part of south and southeast offshore area of the Korea Peninsula was carried out. In the inner shelf floor with depth ranging up to 80m zonal distribution patterns of mud, sandy silt, and silty sand were observed. In the outer shelf, however, coarse sandy sediments are dominant, and shills and gravels were frequently observed. These observations seem to confirm the Holocene sedimentary processes on the continental shelves off the south, south to east coasts of Korea discussed by Park (1985 and 1986) and Park and Choi (1986). The suface sediments (upper most 5cm thick)from selected 9 stations were analyzed for Al,Mn, Fe,Cr,Ni,Cu,Zn and Pb in order to study geochemical behavior of the sediments in the study area. All data were normalized to Al to com, pensate the size effect of the sediments. In general, inner shelf sediments show slight enrichment compared to the outer shelf sediments. In particular,Pb and Zn show heavy enrichment in most of the sediments.to degrees comparable to those observed at the polluted Kwangyang and Masan Bay sediments. Thus,it is considered that rapid migration or movement of fine-grained sediments in the study area does exist. Three seismic stratigraphic units were analyzed based on the seismic records. The acoustic basement the lower sedimentary deposit(B)and the upper deposit(A)were observed. The strong reflectivity R,in particular, between unit A and B is considered to be an erosinal unconformity during the last Glacial time.
The evolution of intricate and striking patterns of suspended sediments (SS), which are created by certain physical dynamics in the East China and Yellow Seas, has been investigated using satellite ocean color imageries and vertical profiles of particle attenuation and backscattering coefficients. The structure of these patterns can reveal a great deal about the process underlying their formation. Sea surface temperature (SST) analyzed from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal infrared data were used to elucidate the physical factors responsible for the evolution of suspended sediment patterns in the East China Sea. The concomitant patterns of suspended sediments were tracked from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color data. The detailed examination about these patterns gave birth to the definition of the evolution of suspended sediments (SS) into four stages: (1) Youth or Infant stage, (2) Younger stage, (3) Mature stage, and (4) Old stage. We describe about the three directional forces of the tidal currents, ocean warm currents and estuarine circulations that lead to occurrence of various stages of the evolution of suspended sediments that increase turbidity at high levels through out the water column of the inner and outer shelf areas during September to April. The occurrence of these four stages could be repeatedly observed. In contrast, vertical profiles of the particle attenuation ($c_{p}$) and backscattering ($b_{bp}$) coefficients displayed obvious patterns of the propagation of suspended sediment plume from the southwestern coastal sea that leads to eventual collision with the massive sediment plume originating from the Yangtze banks of the East China Sea.
Process of resuspension and accumulation well explaines the characteristics of surface sediment size distribution and suspended material in Deukryang Bay. Most of the surface sediments of the bay show asymmetric unimodal size distribution, which is found also in sediments from western part of the inner shelf mud area between Keomundo and Yokchido islands. Investigation of the size curves indicates that surface sediment in Deukryang Bay is a deposit of suspended coastal sediment transported east along southern coast of Korea. The distribution pattern of coarse sit fraction content in the surface sediment is very similar to that of computed current velocity (Lee, 1994), suggesting that fine sediment on the bed may reassumed and accumulate repeatedly due to shallow depth and strong tidal current in Deukryang Bay. The process of repeated resuspension and accumulate repeatedly due to shallow depth and strong tidal current in Deukryang Bay. The process of repeated resuspension and accumulation seems to be responsible not only to the asymmetric size distribution of the surface sediment, but also to the amount of suspended material in the bay. The difference of suspended material concentration between surface and near bottom water in summer is two times as large as that the in winter. This seems to derive from the fact that stratification of water mass prevails in summer, while total water mass is vertically mixed in winter. It was found that the most important factors to decide distribution of suspended material in Deukryang Bay are the physical properties of water mass such as current velocity and stratification, and water depth, in part with the supply of suspended sediment by rivers.
The surfacial bottom sediments on the nearshore to infer continental shelf off the Taean Peninsular, west coast of Korea are dominantly medium-grained clastic sands. About 60% and 20% of these clastic sands are partly iron-stained quartz and completely iron-stained quartz, respectively. Characteristically glauconite grains are abundantly found in these clastic sands. The mineral compositions of clastic sandy sediments in the study area are very similar to those of East China continental shelf sediments. Accordingly, such iron-stained quartz grains, glauconite grains and associated textural characteristics seem to indicate that those sandy sediments are relict sediments related to past condition, i.e. Quaternary low stands of sea level.
