The shear behavior of soil-concrete interface is mainly affected by the surface roughness of the two contact surfaces. The present research emphasizes on investigating the effect of roughness of soil-concrete interface on the interface shear behavior in two-layered laboratory testing samples. In these specially prepared samples, clay silt layer with density of $2027kg/m^3$ was selected to be in contact a concrete layer for simplifying the laboratory testing. The particle size testing and direct shear tests are performed to determine the appropriate particles sizes and their shear strength properties such as cohesion and friction angle. Then, the surface undulations in form of teeth are provided on the surfaces of both concrete and soil layers in different testing carried out on these mixed specimens. The soil-concrete samples are prepared in form of cubes of 10*10*30 cm. in dimension. The undulations (inter-surface roughness) are provided in form of one tooth or two teeth having angles $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, respectively. Several direct shear tests were carried out under four different normal loads of 80, 150, 300 and 500 KPa with a constant displacement rate of 0.02 mm/min. These testing results show that the shear failure mechanism is affected by the tooth number, the roughness angle and the applied normal stress on the sample. The teeth are sheared from the base under low normal load while the oblique cracks may lead to a failure under a higher normal load. As the number of teeth increase the shear strength of the sample also increases. When the tooth roughness angle increases a wider portion of the tooth base will be failed which means the shear strength of the sample is increased.
Most investigators recommended that porcelain surface should be roughened with abrasives and/or be etched with acid in repairing the fractured porcelain with composite resin. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of porcelain surface treatments on the bond strength between porcelain and composite resin by measuring the shear bond strength and observing the porcelain surface with SEM. 48 porcelain disc were fabricated with Vintage porcelain and embedded in epoxy resin with the test surface exposed. The specimens were divided four groups at random and the test surfaces of the four groups were prepared as follows : Group 1 : Porcelain surface was roughened with a fine diamond and treated with 32% phosphoric acid gel for 10 seconds. Group 2 : Porcelain surface was roughened with a fine diamond and etched with 8% hydrofluoric acid gel for 5 minutes. Group 3 : Porcelain surface was roughened with a coarse diamond and treated with 32% phosphoric acid gel for 10 seconds. Group 4 : Porcelain surface was roughened with a coarse diamond and etched with 8% hydrofluoric acid gel for 5 minutes. All specimens were washed for 30 seconds. A representative specimen of each group was selected and the porcelain surface was observed with SEM at 1000 magnification. Remaining specimens were silanated, bonded with composite resin, thermocycled, and shear-tested on specially designed zig connected to Instron machine. The results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of the group etched with hydrofluoric acid was significantly higher than that of group treated with phosphoric acid(p<0.01). 2. The shear bond strength of the group roughened with a fine diamond was not significantly different from that of the group roughened with a coarse diamond(p>0.01). 3. SEM examination of prepared porcelain surfaces revealed that the surface etched with hydrofluoric acid showed numerous microporosities, undercut, and rougher surface than the surface treated with phosphoric acid. 4. All specimens etched with hydrofluoric acid showed cohesive failure within porcelain, but specimens treated with phosphoric acid mainly showed adhesive failure between porcelain and composite resin.
The changes in the dispersion of carbon black in liquid polyisoprene under shear flow with time have been investigated by time-resolved ultra small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) method. The analyses of USAXS profile immediately after the start of shear flow clarified that the aggregates of carbon black with a mean radius of gyration of 14 nm and surface fractal dimension of 2.5 form the fractal network structure with mass-fractal dimension of 2.9. After the application of the shear flow, the scattering intensity increases with time at the observed whole entire q region, and then the a shoulder appears at $q=0.005nm^{-1}$, indicating that the agglomerate is broken and becomes smaller by shear flow. The analysis by the Unified Guinier/Power-law approach yielded several characteristic parameters, such as the sizes of aggregate and agglomerate, mass-fractal dimension of agglomerate, and surface fractal dimension of the primary particle. While the mean radius of gyration of the agglomerate decreases with time, the mean radius of gyration of the aggregate, mass fractal dimension, and surface fractal dimension don't change with time, indicating that the aggregates peel off the surface of the agglomerate.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of surface treatments on shear bond strength of resin composite bonded to thermocycled and non-thermocycled CAD/CAM resin-ceramic hybrid materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 120 specimens ($10{\times}10{\times}2mm$) from each material were divided into 12 groups according to different surface treatments in combination with thermal aging procedures. Surface treatment methods were airborne-particle abrasion (abraded with 50 micron alumina particles), dry grinding (grinded with $125{\mu}m$ grain size bur), and hydrofluoric acid (9%) and silane application. According to the thermocycling procedure, the groups were assigned as non-thermocycled, thermocycled after packing composites, and thermocycled before packing composites. The average surface roughness of the non-thermocycled specimens were measured after surface treatments. After packing composites and thermocycling procedures, shear bond strength (SBS) of the specimens were tested. The results of surface roughness were statistically analyzed by 2-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and SBS results were statistically analyzed by 3-way ANOVA. RESULTS. Surface roughness of GC were significantly lower than that of LU and VE (P<.05). The highest surface roughness was observed for dry grinding group, followed by airborne particle abraded group (P<.05). Comparing the materials within the same surface treatment method revealed that untreated surfaces generally showed lower SBS values. The values of untreated LU specimens showed significantly different SBS values compared to those of other surface treatment groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. SBS was affected by surface treatments. Thermocycling did not have any effect on the SBS of the materials except acid and silane applied GC specimens, which were subjected to thermocycling before packing of the composite resin.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of etching by monitoring the etched surfaces and the shear bonding strength of resin and porcelain with etched zirconia. Methods: The CAD/CAM was used to produce 24 zirconia blocks in groups of six. The zirconia specimen surfaces were sandblasted, and they were then divided into 12 specimens with surface etching and 12 specimens without etching for the control group. 12 specimens of composite resin were bonded using a curing light, and 12 specimens of porcelain underwent vita porcelain build-up sintering and the shear bonding strength was measured using a universal testing system. The SEM photographs were taken in order to observe any differences in the surfaces before and after etching, and they were magnified by a factor of 8 in order to observe fractured surface types. Results: The results of the shear bonding strength measurements are as follows: For the composite resin tests, between zirconia and resin, the shear bonding strength of the control group (NZR) without surface etching was 4.68 Mpa and the experimental group (EZC) with surface etching was 9.65 Mpa, which is significantly higher. The crystal structure of the zirconia was confirmed to be different in observations of the surfaces before and after etching. Conclusion : In comparing the shear bonding strength of zirconia and composite resin, the effects of etching were found to be significant. The effects of surface etching were also observed in fractured surfaces between zirconia and porcelain. This is expected to be applicable to various prosthetics as surface etching on zirconia is used in clinics.
Purpose: This study was observation shear bonding strength by compositional change and firing step of a Ni-Cr alloy for porcelain fused metal crown. The aim of study was to suggest the material for firing step of Ni71-Cr14 alloy to development of alloy for porcelain fused to metal crown. Methods: The test was on the two kinds of Ni-Cr alloy specimens. The surfaces of two alloys were analyzed by EDX in order to observe oxide characteristic. And the shear test was performed by MTS. Results: The surface property and oxide characteristic analysis of oxide layer, weight percentage of Element O within $Ni_{71}Cr_{14}$ alloy measured 23.32wt%, and $Ni_{59}Cr_{24}$ alloy was measured 23.03wt%. And the maximum shear bonding strength was measured 58.02MPa between $Ni_{59}Cr_{24}$ alloy and vintage halo(H4 group). Conclusion: The surface property and oxide characteristic three kind of Ni-Cr alloy was similar. and shear bonding strength showed the highest bonding strength in H4 specimens.
The automobile industry is a wide range of related industries, including parts manufacturing and vehicle assembly, press processing is an essential element in making automobiles. Press processing is a processing method for metal sheets that has relatively high dimensional and shape precision and is suitable for mass production. It refers to processing by attaching a special tool, a mold, to a press machine. Recently, the automobile industry is attempting to reduce the weight of automobiles in order to reduce carbon emissions due to global warming, and the use of high-strength steel sheets, which are lighter than general structural steel sheets, is a natural trend. Shear processing is required to use high-strength steel, and the shape of the shear surface created by shear processing has a significant impact on the quality of the automobile. Therefore, various methods are being attempted to improve the share surface during shear processing. Among them, shaving processing is a method of shearing the primary shearing area again, and it is difficult to obtain an accurate answer because complex deformation occurs in the microscopic shear area. Therefore, in this study, the effect of machining allowance on shaving processing was analyzed using the finite element method using high-strength steel plate (SPFH590), and the differences were compared and examined through actual experiments under the same conditions.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has become an attractive cast-in-place repairing material for existing engineering structures. The present study aims to investigate age-dependent high-early-strength UHPC (HESUHPC) material properties (i.e., compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, and tensile strength) as well as interfacial shear properties of HESUHPC-normal strength concrete (NSC) composites cured at different season temperatures (i.e., summer, autumn, and winter). The typical temperatures were kept for at least seven days in different seasons from weather forecasting to guarantee an approximately consistent curing and testing condition (i.e., temperature and relative humidity) for specimens at different ages. The HESUHPC material properties are tested through standardized testing methods, and the interfacial bond performance is tested through a bi-surface shear testing method. The test results quantify the positive development of HESUHPC material properties at the early age, and the increasing amplitude decreases from summer to winter. Three-day mechanical properties in winter (with the lowest curing temperature) still gain more than 60% of the 28-day mechanical properties, and the impact of season temperatures becomes small at the later age. The HESUHPC shrinkage mainly occurs at the early age, and the final shrinkage value is not significant. The HESUHPC-NSC interface exhibits sound shear performance, the interface in most specimens does not fail, and most interfacial shear strengths are higher than the NSC-NSC composite. The HESUHPC-NSC composites at the shear failure do not exhibit a large relative slip and present a significant brittleness at the failure. The typical failures are characterized by thin-layer NSC debonding near the interface, and NSC pure shear failure. Two load-slip development patterns, and two types of main crack location are identified for the HESUHPC-NSC composites tested in different ages and seasons. In addition, shear capacity of the HESUHPC-NSC composite develops rapidly at the early age, and the increasing amplitude decreases as the season temperature decreases. This study will promote the HESUHPC application in practical engineering as a cast-in-place repairing material subjected to different natural environments.
This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear strength of goomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

The paper will present chip formation mechanism and surface integrity generation mechanism based on the systematical experimental tests. Some basic factors such as the end milling cutter tooth number, cutting forces, cutting temperature, cutting vibration, the chip status, the surface roughness, the hardness distribution and the metallographic texture of the machined surface layer are involved. the chip formation mechanism is typical thermal plastic shear localization at high cutting speed with less number og shear ribbons and bigger shear angle than at low speed, which means lack of chip deformation. The high cutting speed with much more cutting teeth will be beneficial to the reduction of cutting forces, enlarge machining stability region, depression of temperature increment, auti-fatigability as well as surface roughness. The burrs always exists both at low cutting speed and at high cutting speed. So the deburr process should be arranged for milling titanium alloy in any case.
