The unsteady supersonic flow over two- and three-Dimensional cavities has been analyzed by the integration of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) with the k - w turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in cavities. Numerical method is upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the Van Leer limiters, and time accuracy is used explicit 4th stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Cavity flows are Comparison of two- and three-dimensional. The cavity has a L/D ratio of 3 for two-dimensional case. and same L/D and W/D ratio is 1 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are held constant at 1.5 and 450000 respectively. For the three-dimensional case, the flow field is observed to oscillate in the 'shear layer mode' with a feedback mechanism that follow Rossiter's formula. On the other hand, the self-sustained oscillating flow transitions to a 'wake mode' for the two-dimensional simulation, with more violent fluctuations inside the cavity.
The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's ${\kappa}\;-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 for two-dimensional case, same aspect ratios with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.53 and 1,600,000 respectively. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster.
This paper proposes a modified bar simulation method for analyzing the shear lag effect of variable sectional box girder with multiple cells. This theoretical method formulates the equivalent area of stiffening bars and the allocation proportion of shear flows in webs, and re-derives the governing differential equations of bar simulation method. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by the model test and finite element (FE) analysis of a simply supported multi-cell box girder with constant depth. Subsequently, parametric analysis is conducted to explore the mechanism of shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder with multiple cells. Results show that the shear lag behavior of variable box-section cantilever box girder is weaker than that of box girder with constant section. It is recommended to make the gradient of shear flow in the web with respect to span length vary as smoothly as possible for eliminating the shear lag effect of box girder. An effective countermeasure for diminishing shear lag effect is to increase the number of box chambers or change the variation manner of bridge depth. The shear lag effect of varied sectional cantilever box girder will get more server when the length of central flanges is shorter than 0.26 or longer than 0.36 times of total width of top flange, as well as the cantilever length exceeds 0.29 times of total length of box's flange. Therefore, the distance between central webs can adjust the shear lag effect of box girder. Especially, the width ratio of cantilever plate with respect to total length of top flange is proposed to be no more 1/3.

Despite geometrical balanced runner system, filling imbalances between cavity to cavity have always been observed in multi-cavity injection mold. These filling imbalances are results from non-symmetrical shear rate distribution within melt as it flows through the runner system. It has been possible to decrease filling imbalance by optimizing processing conditions, but it has not completely eliminated this phenomenon during the injection molding processing. This paper presents a solution of these filling imbalances by using runner core pin which creates a symmetrical shear distribution within runner and the effects on filling imbalance when modifying a shape of runner core pin. As a result of using runner core pin, a remarkable improvement in reducing filling imbalance was confirmed. In addition we investigated how filling imbalances were affected by shape of runner core pin.
For mass production, usually injection mold has multi-cavity which is filled through geometrical balanced runner system. Despite geometrical balanced runner system, filling imbalances between cavity to cavity have always been observed. These filling imbalances are one of the most significant factors to affect quality of plastic parts. Filling imbalances are results from non-symmetrical shear rate distribution within melt when it flows through tile runner system. It has been possible to decrease filling imbalance by optimizing processing conditions, but it has not completely eliminated this phenomenon during injection molding processing. This paper presents a solution for these filling imbalances by using Runner Core pin (RC pin). The Runner Core pin which is developed in this study creates a symmetrical shear distribution within runner. As a result of using Runner Core pin, a remarkable improvement in reducing filling imbalances was confirmed.
Properties of polymer based nanocomposites depend on dispersion state of embedded fillers. In order to examine the effect of dispersion state on rheological properties, a new bi-mode FENE dumbbell model was proposed. The FENE dumbbell model includes two separate ensemble sets of dumbbells with different friction coefficients, which simulate behavior of well dispersed and aggregated carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A new parameter indicating dispersion state of the CNT was proposed to account for degree of dispersion quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Rheological material functions in elongational, steady shear, and oscillatory shear flows were obtained numerically. The CNT/epoxy nanocomposites with different dispersion state were prepared depending on whether a solvent is used for the dispersion of CNTs or not. Dispersion state of the CNT in the epoxy nanocomposites was morphologically characterized by the field emission scanning electronic microscope and the transmission electron microscope images. It was found that the numerical prediction was in a good agreement with experimental results especially for steady state shear flow.
This study presents results on the numerical simulation of Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow in a channel obstructed by an asymmetric array of obstacles for clarifying the descriptive ability of current non-Newtonian constitutive equations. Jones and Walters (1989) have performed the corresponding experiment that clearly demonstrates the characteristic difference among the flow patterns of the various liquids. In order to appropriately account for flow properties, the Navier-Stokes, the Carreau viscous and the Leonov equations are employed for Newtonian, shear thinning and extension hardening liquids, respectively. Making use of the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the Leonov model in the computational scheme, we have obtained stable solutions up to relatively high Deborah numbers. The peculiar characteristics of the non-Newtonian liquids such as shear thinning and extension hardening seem to be properly illustrated by the flow modeling. In our opinion, the results show the possibility of current constitutive modeling to appropriately describe non-Newtonian flow phenomena at least qualitatively, even though the model parameters specified for the current computation do not precisely represent material characteristics.
Biodegradable nanocomposites were prepared by mixing a polymer resin and layered silicates by the melt intercalation method. Internal structure of the nanocomposite was characterized by using the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Nanocomposites having exfoliated and intercalated structures were obtained by employing two different organically modified nanoclays. Rheological properties in shear and extensional flows and biodegradability of nanocomposites were measured. In shear flow, shear thinning behavior and increased storage modulus were observed as the clay loading increased. In extensional flow, strain hardening behavior was observed in well dispersed system. Nanocomposites with the exfoliated structure had better biodegradability than nanocomposites with the intercalated structure or pure polymer.

This work presents a numerical analysis of two-phase natural circulation flow in reactor cavity under external vessel cooling. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for multiphase flows with zero equation turbulence model are solved to predict the shear key effect on the circulation rate of cooling water and the distribution of void fraction according to the different mass flow of inlet air. Results show that shear key has a positive effect on the circulation rate of cooling water and induce a local increase of void fraction below the shear key, but not remarkably.
The main objective of present study is to obtain information for flow characteristics, such as velocity and wall shear stress, of bifurcation in blood vessel. Branch flows for Newtonian fluids are simulated by using Fluent V.6.0. The numerical simulations are carried out for five cases divided by different values of bifurcation angle and area ratio. As a result of simulation, high wall shear stress is appeared at the bifurcated region. As increasing bifurcation angle, pressure drop is increasing. In addition, as the area is decreasing, pressure drop and wall shear stress is increasing.
