The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration of stepped noncircular arches. Taking into account the effects of axial deformation, rotatory inertia and shear deformation, the governing differential equations are solved numerically for the elliptic and sinusoidal geometries with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. The lowest four natural frequencies are presented as functions of four non-dimensional system parameters: the arch rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the section ratio, and the discontinuous sector ratio.

The objective of this work is to study the effects of the modification of material properties on the vibration of the FGM beam using an integral shear strain model. In the present theory, the rotational displacement is replaced by an integral term in the displacement fields. The use of a shear correction factor is not necessary because our model gives a parabolic description of shear stress through the thickness while satisfying the conditions of zero shear stresses on the bottom and top surfaces of the beam. The FGM beam is assumed that the beam is a mixture of metal and ceramic, and that its properties change depending on the power functions of the thickness of the beam such as: linear, quadratic, cubic and inverse quadratic. By applying Hamilton's principle, general formulas were obtained to obtain the frequencies of the FGM beam. The effects of changing compositional characteristics of materials presented by volume fraction of FGM beams with simply supported edges on free vibration and some mode shapes are investigated.
This paper deals with the geometrical non-linear analyses of the buckled columns. Differential equations governing elasticas of the buckled columns are derived, in which both effects of taper type and shear deformation are included. Three kinds of taper types such as breadth, depth and square tapers are considered. Differential equations are solved numerically to obtain the elasticas and buckling loads of such columns. End constraint of both clamped ends and both hinged ends are considered. The effects of shear deformation on the elastica of the buckled column and buckling load of column are investigated extensively. Experimental studies are presented that complement theoretical results of non-linear responses of the elasticas.
This paper discusses a new model for investigating the micro-mechanical behavior of beam-like structures composed of various elastic moduli and complex geometries varying through the cross-sectional directions and also periodically-repeated along the axial directions. The original three-dimensional problem is first formulated in an unified and compact intrinsic form using the concept of decomposition of the rotation tensor. Taking advantage of two smallness of the cross-sectional dimension-to-length parameter and the micro-to-macro heterogeneity and performing homogenization along dimensional reduction simultaneously, the variational asymptotic method is used to rigorously construct an effective zeroth-order beam model, which is similar a generalized Timoshenko one (the first-order shear deformation model) capable of capturing the transverse shear deformations, but still carries out the zeroth-order approximation which can maximize simplicity and promote efficiency. Two examples available in literature are used to demonstrate the consistence and efficiency of this new model, especially for the structures, in which the effects of transverse shear deformations are significant.
In this work, a new trigonometry theory of shear deformation is developed for the static analysis of thick isotropic beams. The number of variables used in this theory is identical to that required in the theory of Euler-Bernoulli, sine function is used in the displacement field in terms of the coordinates of the thickness to represent the effects of shear deformation. The advantage of this theory is that shear stresses can be obtained directly from the relationships constitute, while respecting the boundary conditions at the free surface level of the beam. Therefore, this theory avoids the use of shear correction coefficients. The differential equilibrium equations are obtained using the principle of virtual works. A thick isotropic beam is considered, whose numerical study to show the effectiveness of this theory.
In this paper, a free vibration analysis of functionally graded beam made of porous material is presented. The material properties are supposed to vary along the thickness direction of the beam according to the rule of mixture, which is modified to approximate the material properties with the porosity phases. For this purpose, a new displacement field based on refined shear deformation theory is implemented. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. Based on the present refined shear deformation beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. The rule of mixture is modified to describe and approximate material properties of the FG beams with porosity phases. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions. Illustrative examples are given also to show the effects of varying gradients, porosity volume fraction, aspect ratios, and thickness to length ratios on the free vibration of the FG beams.
This paper proposes a new nonlocal higher-order hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory (HSBT) for the static bending and vibration of nanoscale-beams. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is incorporated, in order to capture small size effects. In the present model, the transverse shear stresses account for a hyperbolic distribution and satisfy the free-traction boundary conditions on the upper and bottom surfaces of the nanobeams without using shear correction factor. Employing Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal equations of motion are derived. The governing equations are solved analytically for the edges of the beam are simply supported, and the obtained results are compared, as possible, with the available solutions found in the literature. Furthermore, the influences of nonlocal coefficient, slenderness ratio on the static bending and dynamic responses of the nanobeam are examined.
In this paper, the critical buckling temperature of single-walled Boron Nitride nanotube (SWBNNT) is estimated using a new nonlocal first-order shear deformation beam theory. The present model is capable of capturing both small scale effect and transverse shear deformation effects of SWBNNT and is based on assumption that the inplane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. Results indicate the importance of the small scale effects in the thermal buckling analysis of Boron Nitride nanotube.
