Study on the dynamic bandwidth allocation over Ethernet Passive Optical Network (이더넷 수동형 광가입자망에서의 동적 대역폭 할당에 관한 연구)

  • Ethernet-based passive optical network(EPON) technology is being considered as a promising solution for next-generation broadband access network. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service(QoS). A major feature for this new architecture is the use of a shared transmission media between all connected optical network unit(ONU). Hence, medium access control(MAC) arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPON. In this paper we propose a simple dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA) algorithm that improves the performance of network and supports IP-based multimedia applications with the bursty data traffic. In addition, we introduce analytic models of proposed algorithms and prove the system based on our algorithm to be asymptotically stable. Simulation results show the new DBA algorithm provides high bandwidth efficiency and low queueing delay of ONU in EPON.

  • As a channel is shared in upstream direction, a Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation(DBA) algorithm is necessary for Ethernet Passive Optical Network(EPON) to allocate bandwidths effectively. In this paper, we proposed a algorithm of DBA using a new Proportional Factor and analyzed it.

  • Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has drawn many attention as a promising access network technology for FTTH because it can provide a high bandwidth with a low cost. Since the uplink bandwidth in the EPON system is shared by many users, it is necessary for an EPON system to have an efficient bandwidth allocation mechanism. To support QoS in EPON, the previous bandwidth allocation schemes employ strict priority queueing (SPQ). Since SPQ gives unlimited priority to higher service class, the QoS of lower service classes gets worse. In this paper, we propose Class Gated DBA (Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation) algorithm in which the bandwidth is requested / granted in a service class basis. To avoid the monopoly in bandwidth usage by higher classes the maximum bandwidth that is allocate to each service class is limited (fairness between services classes). In addition, to avoid the monopoly in bandwidth usage by some particular users, each ONU runs fairness bandwidth allocation algorithm within each service classes. Through computer simulations, it is verified that the proposed algorithm achieves a good level of QoS, and at the same time maintains a good level of fairness between both service classes and users.

  • Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has drawn many attention as a promising access network technology because it can provide a high bandwidth with a low cost. Since the uplink in the EPON system is shared by many users, it is necessary for an EPON system to have an efficient bandwidth allocation mechanism. In addition, as the users demand more QoS-oriented applications, it is necessary for an EPON system to have an efficient mechanism supporting QoS. In this paper, we propose a variable window dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm for the EPON system. Unlike the previously proposed DBA algorithms, the variable window algorithm guarantees the QoS for the highest priority class, and at the same time provides more enhanced QoS for the lower priority classes by dynamically allocating bandwidth if necessary. It is verified through the simulations that the variable window algorithm can provide more enhanced QoS performance than other DBA algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a protection architecture of passive optical network (PON) system by using two optical line terminals (OLTs). Using this scheme, the network can sustain services to access area and restores normal operation in faulty conditions. Unlike existing systems, the proposed one increases the efficiency of the system by operating both OLTs using different wavelengths in normal condition. During protection mode, a Shared-bandwidth allocation scheme is employed to maximize the utilization efficiency. Performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme can provide reliability to Ethernet-based PON system very efficiently.

  • Enhanced radio access technologies (RAT) are deployed in Next Generation Convergence Networks by the service providers so as to satisfy the basic requirements of end-users for e.g. QoS. Whenever the available resources are being shared simultaneously and dynamically by multiple users or distribution of allocated channels randomly, the deficiency of spectral resources and dynamic behavior of Network traffic in real time Networking, we may have problem. In order to evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm, computer simulation has been performed on NS-2 simulator and a comparison with the existing algorithms has been made.
