  • The SIMP (solid isotropic material with penalization) approach is perhaps the most popular density variable relaxation method in topology optimization. This method has been very successful in many applications, but the optimization solution convergence can be improved when new variables, not the direct density variables, are used as the design variables. In this work, we newly propose S-shape functions mapping the original density variables nonlinearly to new design variables. The main role of S-shape function is to push intermediate densities to either lower or upper bounds. In particular, this method works well with nonlinear mathematical programming methods. A method of feasible directions is chosen as a nonlinear mathematical programming method in order to show the effects of the S-shape scaling function on the solution convergence.

  • 'There are a lot of process variables, exerted influence on the formability of products, in deep drawing process. Particularly, it is important that the punch and die shape radius of the process variables. Though researches have been performed on the deep drawing of sheet metal forming, like this study, but it is insufficient the actual circumstances that researches for process variables of the non-axisymmetric deep drawing products. In this study, An effect on thickness distribution is grasped as alteration of the punch and die shape radius in the process of non-axisyrnmetric deep drawing products, and then the optimal punch and die shape radius were presented, they were verified by the numerical analysis method (FEM).

  • In the multi-pass shape drawing process, the appropriate process design is very important to produce sound products. The reduction ratio, die angle, and the intermediate die shape are very important process variable of the multi-pass shape drawing. The aim of this study is the determination of the reduction ratio, die angle, and the intermediate die shape of the 2 pass shape drawing process for producing steering spline shaft. In this study, FE analysis, Taguchi method, and ANN(artificial neural network) were applied to determine the appropriate reduction ratio, die angle, and intermediate die shape. After the determination of the process variables, FE analysis and drawing experiment were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the determined process variables. The dimensional accuracy of the final drawn spline shaft was evaluated by using 3D surface profiler and 3D laser digitizing system.

  • This paper presents a technique to optimize the shape of waveguide components in H-plane. The technique utilizes the numerical optimization process which employs the vector finite element method. In the optimization process, the sensitivity of an objective function with respect to design variables is computed by introducting adjoint variables, which makes the computation easy. The steepest descent method is then employed to update design variables. As a numerical example, an H-plane waveguide teejunction was considered to obtain optimized shape. Comparison between the initial and optimized shape was made.

  • A flexible stretch forming process is useful for small quantity batch production because various shape changes of the flexible die can be achieved conveniently. In this study, the design variables, namely, the punch size, curvature radius and elastic pad thickness, were quantitatively evaluated to understand their influence on sheet formability using statistical methods such as the correlation and regression analyses. Forming simulations were designed and conducted by a three-way factorial design to obtain numerical values of a shape error. Linear relationships between the design variables and the shape error resulted from the Pearson correlation analysis. Subsequently, a regression analysis was also conducted between the design variables and the shape error. A regression equation was derived and used in the flexible die design stage to estimate the shape error.

  • In order to improve the fatigue lift of a lower control arm in the vehicle suspension, a new shape optimization procedure is presented. In this approach, the shape control point concept is introduced to reduce the numbers of shape design variables. Also, the two-level orthogonal way is employed to evaluate the design sensitivity of fatigue life with respect to those shape design variables, because the analytical design sensitivity information is not directly supplied from the commercial CAE softwares. In this approach, only the six design variables are used to approximate the shape of lower control arm. Then, performed are only 10 fatigue life analyses including the baseline design, 8 DOE models and the final design. The final design, the best combination obtained from the sensitivity information, can maximize the fatigue lift nearly two times as that of the baseline design, while reducing the 12 percentage of weight than it.

  • In this study, the peak stress of a fuillet in elastic structure was optimized to have minimum value by using quadratic isoparametric element. The method of auomatic gridding was also developed along with shape algorithm and design element technique was adopted in selecting design variables. The computer program developed was combined with the Hooke-Jeeves direct algorithm of optimization techniques in order to minimize the peak stress of the fillet. The imployment of design element technique significantly cut down computer time by the reduction in design variables, and the opitmum fillet shape with uniform minimum stress was obtained by varying design variables along x and y directions in improving the shape compared to other results. By using automatic gridding, in which Bezier surfaces and Coons surfaces of cubic interpolation were employed, the irregular boundary was removed resulting in smoother anbd more accurate fillet shape possessing uniform minimum stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental data of characterizing for age group of obese women's body shape. The subjects were 132 obese women, age of 20~59. The criteria of obestity based on Vervaeck index ($\geq$92.3), Rohrer index ($\geq$ 1.6), and bust girth ($\geq$90 cm). Thirty eight measurement items were used for F-test. Forty two transformed variables (including 4 additional variables) were used for cluster analysis The results were as follows: 1. Characteristics for age group were described that 20's was narrow shoulder, flesh contoured shape in upper body. 30's was rounded upper back, 40's was the slightest fatty shape, and 50's was the fattest round shape among four age groups. 2. Four types of obese women's body shape were classified by cluster analysis. Body shape of type 1 was fatty abdomen, and rounded upper back in 50's mainly. Body shape of type 2 was slightly fatty. Body shape of type 3 was round shape. Body shape of type 4 was the smallest girth in the obese women in 40's mainly.

  • Shape parameters and design variables for a centrifugal compressor impeller were investigated for optimizing a centrifugal compressor. In order to compare the performance of an optimized impeller with the performance of the original impeller, an already tested impeller was chosen and design variables for optimization were selected. The meridional shapes at the shroud and at the hub were re-designed using the Bezier curve. The camber-lines of the impeller blade at the hub and at the tip were also expressed by the Bezier curve. The shape curves for impeller could be expressed using 6-8 control points. Among them, eight control points which have strong effect to the shape can be selected as design variables for optimization. Therefore, any impeller which is expressed by data points for its shape can be optimized using few design variables.
