  • This paper proposes a new part family classification system (IPFACS: Image Processing and Fuzzy ART based Clustering System), which incorporates image processing techniques and a modified fuzzy ART neural network algorithm. IPFACS can classify parts based on geometrical shape and manufacturing attributes, simultaneously. With a proper reduction and normalization of an image data through the image processing methods and adding method in the modified Fuzzy ART, different types of geometrical shape data and manufacturing attribute data can be simultaneously classified in the same system. IPFACS has been tested for an example set of hypothetical parts. The results show that IPFACS provides a good feasible approach to form families based on both geometrical shape and manufacturing attributes.

  • Morphology of contemporary city streets is composed of overlapping infrastructures corresponding to the new street within the established organization, contemporary system, future circumstance, and population. As well, two overlaid organizations and morphological, historical, social and physical development lead to sharp acute algle(triangular) site, and the architecture in this site has a restriction on the availability of the internal space and the external design due to outside shape sharpness. We want to have a positive effect on the internal and external design of the architecture in the future by categorization of the shape and processing characteristics of the acute angle corner of the trilateral site. The characteristics and design categorization shown in this case study are as follows. Constitution a unique and independent form, lead streets and shape a exclusive image of the landscape, alleviate sharpness by configuring a acute angle point as a plane, use void to give reserve character, replace roundness for companionability to induce ambience in the road, embrace the characteristics of the site and create internal spaces and functions, emphasize the characteristics of each stairs, retain of uniqueness and highlight the characteristics of a vertical elements.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify foot shapes of elderly women by classifying their foot types according to the shapes of sole (plantar view) of foot and analyzing the characteristics of each type. The subjects were 321 elderly women over 60 years of age. Their right feet were measured indirectly by using .scanner. The anthropometric measurements consist of 32 items. They were measured during the months of July and August in 2001. The results and discussions of this study are as follows. First, in analyzing sole of the foot of elderly women, the shapes of sole were classified as W-type (wider width for its length and severe alteration), A-type (similar to W-type but with narrower width), D-type (protruded outside) and H-type (even foot width). Second, the most characteristic sole type in elderly women was W-type. In this type, the width was wider for its length, the first metatarsophalangeal protrusion was severe and the toes were gathered at the center. Hopefully, understanding the shapes of sole and characteristics of each sole type will help to develop suitable shoes for elderly women.

  • The differential white blood cell count plays an important role in the diagnosis of different diseases. It is a tedious task to count these classes of cell manually. An automatic counter using computer vision helps to perform this medical test rapidly and accurately. Most commercial-available automatic white blood cell analysis composed mainly 3 steps including segmentation, feature extraction and classification. In this paper we concentrate on the first step in automatic white-blood-cell analysis by proposing a segmentation scheme that utilizes a benefit of active contour. Specifically, the binary image is obtained by thresolding of the input blood smear image. The initial shape of active is then placed roughly inside the white blood cell and allowed to grow to fit the shape of individual white blood cell. The white blood cell is then separated using the extracted contour. The force that drives the active contour is the combination of gradient vector flow force and balloon force. Our purposed technique can handle very promising to separate the remaining red blood cells.

  • Somatotypes in the lower torso and legs of adult females were classified and discriminated. Then their distribution according to the age groups was studied. The subjects were 343 females of 18 to 49 year-old. 36 anthropometric and 21 photographic measurements were taken to each subject. The results were as follows: 1. The somatotypes in the lower torso and legs were classified into 4 types and their differences were shown by analysing factor scores and anthropometric values according to each somatotype. 2. The shape characteristic of tile classified somatotypes was represented by the rating scale of Heath-Carter. 3. The lateral silhouettes of 4 types were compared with balanced type which is type 3 in this study. 4. Individual somatotype in the lower torso and legs could be discriminated from the measured anthropometric data without modifying the data. Anthropometric data, which are needed for discriminating individual somatotype, are waist circumference, posterior waist height, and hip circumference. 5. The distribution of the somatotypes in each age group showed that the dominant somatotype of each age group was different and any somatotype was shown in a specified age group but rarely in other age group.

  • This study aims at establishing a sizing system required for producing ready-made clothes which can fit the body shape of disabled men using wheelchair. It measured the bodies of 178 adult men using wheelchair and compared the sizing system of German adult men using wheelchair (1984) with KS system(KS K0050, 2004) in order to establish standards of the sizing system. AS a result, in terms of classification of body shapes, KS system cover more types of disabled men's body shapes and especially, A types (Drop 15.6) showed the widest coverage with 32%. In classification of heights, the widest range of height was 170 cm, and Korean men's four sizes between 158 cm and 176 cm covers 88.2% of disabled men's body shape. For chest size, 91.1% of disabled men's chest sizes were included in seven sizes, which are 4 cm intervals between 88 cm and 112 cm with 100 cm standard. In consideration of the ranges of height and chest, the general sizes (A types; 11 sizes, B types; 3 sizes, Y types; 5 sizes) are selected to present the standardized measurements. Basic parts of the upper garment sizing system for disabled men using wheelchair were height-chest-waist size.

  • It is very often necessary to search for similar parts during designing a new product because its parts are often easily designed by modifying existing similar parts. In this way, the design time and cost can be reduced. Thus it would be nice to have an efficient similarity comparison algorithm that can be used anytime in the design process. There have been many approaches to compare shape similarity between two solids. In this paper, two parts represented in B-Rep is compared in two steps: one for overall appearances and the other for detail features. In the first step, geometric information is used in low level of detail for easy and fast pre-classification by the overall appearance. In the second step, feature information is used to compare the detail shape in high level of detail to find more similar design. To realize the idea above, a multi resolution algorithm is proposed so that a given solid is described by an overall appearance in a low resolution and by detail features in high resolution. Using this multi-resolution representation, parts can be compared based on the overall appearance first so that the number of parts to be compared in high resolution is reduced, and then detail features are investigated to retrieve the most similar part. In this way, computational time can be reduced by the fast classification in the first step while reliability can be preserved by detail comparison in the second step.

  • With the recent surge in YouTube usage, there has been a proliferation of user-generated videos where individuals evaluate cosmetics. Consequently, many companies are increasingly utilizing evaluation videos for their product marketing and market research. However, a notable drawback is the manual classification of these product review videos incurring significant costs and time. Therefore, this paper proposes a deep learning-based cosmetics search algorithm to automate this task. The algorithm consists of two networks: One for detecting candidates in images using shape features such as circles, rectangles, etc and Another for filtering and categorizing these candidates. The reason for choosing a Two-Stage architecture over One-Stage is that, in videos containing background scenes, it is more robust to first detect cosmetic candidates before classifying them as specific objects. Although Two-Stage structures are generally known to outperform One-Stage structures in terms of model architecture, this study opts for Two-Stage to address issues related to the acquisition of training and validation data that arise when using One-Stage. Acquiring data for the algorithm that detects cosmetic candidates based on shape and the algorithm that classifies candidates into specific objects is cost-effective, ensuring the overall robustness of the algorithm.
