  • Heat transfer and flow characteristics in a pipe in which the rotating cutting tool for boring a underground pipe without digging were considered in this study. The amount of heat generation due to the friction between the rotating cutter and pipe wall, mixing (low of air and water injected to cool down are the two important factors to design the boring machine Computational fluid dynamics analysis using the Eulerian mixture model and the standard $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was used to analyze the complex phenomena in a pipe during the process. Results show that pipe wall temperature decreased with increasing the cooling water inlet velocity. it is also shown that pipe wail temperature was lowered when the cutter rotation speed was increased until 600 rpm. There was no further cooling effect over 600 rpm.

  • The quality of the supply water which is supplied to consumer is not the thing of water after filtrating but the thing of water from faucet through pipe. As a result, heavy metals and microorganism, that is the major materials, which cause the distrust of the supply water is generated by supply process. Especially, the heavy metal is generated by the corrosion of waterworks. Besides, rupture by corrosion of pipe becomes the factor of supply water's pollution in waterworks and the factor of pollution of the soil and environment in drain pipe. Therefore, this research examined the weight reduction electric potential measure to measure the corrosion degree of piping materials after testing the corrosion of piping materials(Copper Pipe, Galvanized Steel Pipe, Stainless Steel Pipe) which is generally used at the moment in various corrosion environments(subterranean water, supply water, 3.5% NaCl, 3.5% $HNO_3$). And let me show basic design data about problem occurrence such as leakage water, rust water, inside and outside corrosion from this.

  • The deposition of solids in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and proper pipe management, estimations of solid loads on land surface in a drainage basin and solid deposition in sewer system due to rainfall are needed but these tasks are very difficult and very expensive. In this study, procedures for estimating solid loads on surface in a drainage basin were applied and analyzed in Gunja drainage basin in Korea. Also, this paper presents the development and application of estimation equation for solid deposition in sewer system due to rainfall based on the solid deposition estimated using MOUSE model. As results, the comparison between estimated and measured solid deposition is difficult due to the absent of measured data, but the estimated values using developed equations show applicability compared with the results of MOUSE model and the application of the other basin. The developed estimation equations can be used usefully for the management of combined sewer system.

  • In this study, we conducted water-quality analysis of wastewater and in-situ flow measurement using automatic flow rate measuring instrument to identify characteristics of wastewater in urban areas, and collected samples in gutter fur storm water drain, rainfall bucket, and aqueduct of pipe from roof, and outfalls of basins to examine the contribution by pollution origins such as base wastewater, atmospheric washing, runoff by roof surface, runoff by road surface, erosion of sewer sediment. In the result, the concentration of pollutants reached peak in the beginning of rainfall due to first flush, was 3 to 10 times higher than average concentration of dry period, and was lower than that of dry period due to dilution of storm water. In the analysis of the contribution by pollution origins, the ratio of load by sewer sediment resuspension to the total pollution load was 54.6% fer COD, and 73.3% fur SS. Accordingly, we can reduce the total pollutant load by periodical dredging and washing of sewer sediment, and control the loadings by overflow of combined sewer overflows.

  • In this study, the optimum design technology is suggested by using reliability analysis method. Nowadays, urban flood inundation is easily occurred because of local heavy rain. Traditional deterministic design method for storm sewer may underestimate the size of pipe. Therefore, stochastic method for the storm sewer design is necessary to solve this problem. In the present study, reliability model using FORM (First Order Reliability Method) was developed for the storm sewer. Developed model was applied to the real storm sewers of 5 different areas. Probability of exceeding capacity has been calculated and construction costs according to diameter have been compared. Probability of exceeding capacity of storm sewers of 5 areas have been calculated after estimating the return period of rainfall intensity.

  • Ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey is a geophysical method that utilizes electromagnetic waves reflecting from a boundary where the electromagnetic property changes. As the frequency of the antenna is about 25 MHz ~ 1 GHz, it is effective to acquire high resolution images of underground pipe, artificial structure, underground cavity, and underground structure. In this study, we analyzed the change of signals reflected from the same underground objects according to the arrangement of transceiver antennas used in ground penetrating radar survey. The antenna used in the experiment was 200 MHz, and the survey was performed in the vertical direction across the sewer and the parallel direction along the sewer to the sewer buried under the road, respectively. A total of five antenna array methods were applied to the survey. The most used arrangement is when the transmitting and receiving antennas are all perpendicular to the survey line (PR-BD). The PR-BD arrangement is effective when the object underground is a horizontal reflector with an angle of less than 30°, such as the sewer under investigation. In this case study, it was confirmed that the transmitter and receiver antennas perpendicular to the survey line (PR-BD) are the most effective way to show the underground structure. In addition, in the case where the transmitting and receiving antennas are orthogonal to each other (XPOL), no specific reflected wave was observed in both experiments measured across or parallel to the sewer. Therefore, in the case of detecting undiscovered objects in the underground, the PR-BD array method in which the transmitting and receiving antennas are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the survey line taken as a reference and the XPOL method in which the transmitting and receiving antennas are orthogonal to each other are all used, it can be effective to apply both of the above arrangements after setting the direction to 45° and 135°.

  • Most sewer lines buried in the city are likely to be collapsed due to serious aging. Also, due to the high concentration of development and high population density and traffic, the collapse of the sewer will cause enormous social and economic damage. Therefore, proactive maintenance is required to prevent accidents caused by deteriorated sewer pipe. In order to utilize limited budget effectively, risk-based prioritization methods should be proposed that simultaneously consider the consequence of failure and the probability of failure. In this study, the method of risk-based prioritization of sewer was examined by reviewing various cases of overseas studies and applied to the urban sub-catchment. First, the impact factors that can be secured through the sewer GIS DB in Seoul were derived, and the weight, sub-criteria, and impact score of each impact factor were determined and the consequence of failure was calculated by weight sum method. In addition, the probability of failure was calculated by dividing the service life by the estimated useful life, and the consequence of failure and the probability of failure were classified into five grades by the Jenks natural breaks classification method. The prioritization method was applied to sub-catchment in the Seoul to derive a risk matrix and a risk grade. As a result, 26% of all subjects were selected as the inspection priority subjects with 4-5 risk grade. Therefore, using the risk-based CCTV prioritization methodology, it will be possible to systematically determine the objects that need investigation first.

  • Sewer deterioration models can offer important information on prediction of future condition of the asset to decision makers in their implementing sewer pipe networks management program. In this study, Markov chain model was used to estimate sewer deterioration trend based on the historical structural condition assessment data obtained by CCTV inspection. The data used in this study were limited to Hume pipe with diameter of 450 mm and 600 mm in three sub-catchment areas in city A, which were collected by CCTV inspection projects performed in 1998-1999 and 2010-2011. As a result, it was found that sewers in sub-catchment area EM have deteriorated faster than those in other two sub-catchments. Various main defects were to generate in 29% of 450 mm sewers and 38% of 600 mm in 35 years after the installation, while serious failure in 62% of 450 mm sewers and 74% of 600 mm in 100 years after the installation in sub-catchment area EM. In sub-catchment area SN, main defects were to generate in 26% of 450 mm sewers and 35% of 600 mm in 35 years after the installation, while in sub-catchment area HK main defects were to generate in 27% of 450 mm sewers and 37% of 600 mm in 35 years after the installation. Larger sewer pipes of 600 mm were found to deteriorate faster than smaller sewer pipes of 450 mm by about 12 years. Assuming that the percentage of main defects generation could be set as 40% to estimate the life expectancy of the sewers, it was estimated as 60 years in sub-catchment area SN, 42 years in sub-catchment area EM, 59 years in sub-catchment area HK for 450 mm sewer pipes, respectively. For 600 mm sewer pipes, on the other hand, it was estimated as 43 years, 34 years, 39 years in sub-catchment areas SN, EM, and HK, respectively.

  • Accumulation of sediment within pipelines, manholes, and other components of urban sewer systems can have a bad influence on sewerage arrangements, such as the resistance of the passage of flows, the cause of urban flooding and the premature operation of combined sewer overflows, and the inevitable pollution of watercourses. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the movements and sedimentation of sediment loads in combining junction manholes by experiments. In this study, hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the manhole shapes (square, circle) were installed to measure deposited sedimentation quantity. The quantity of deposited sediment loads was measured by different conditions, for instance, the inflow conditions of sediment (continuous and certain period), the amount of inflow sediment, and the variation of inflow pipe of sediment. The combining junction manhole that was set up a inclined benching have the considerable effect of reduction of sedimentation in manholes without apropos of the change of manhole shapes. Therefore, the improved manhole could be increased the drainage capacity of sewerage arrangements in urban sewer systems.

  • The objective of sewer rehabilitation is to improve its function while eliminating inflow/infiltration (I/I) and insufficient carrying capacity (ICC). Such rehabilitation efforts, however, have not been particularly successful due to a lack of sewer data and unsystematic field practices. The present study aimed to solve these problems by developing a decision making model consisting of two models: the rehabilitation weighting model (RWM) and the rehabilitation priority model (RPM). In RWM, the I/I of each pipe in a drainage district is estimated according to various defects, with each defect given an individual weighting factor using an analytic hierarchy process (AHP). RPM determines the optimal rehabilitation priority (ORP) using a genetic algorithm (GA). The developed models can be used to overcome the problems associated with unsystematic practices and, in practice, as a decision making tool for urban sewer system rehabilitation.
