The hard disk is one of the most frequently used storage in IPTV sep-top box. It has large storage capacity and provides fast I/O speed compared to its price whereas it causes high power consumption due to mechanical characteristics of spindle motor. In order to play streaming data in the set-top box, spindle motor of hard disk keeps active mode and it causes high power consumption. In this paper, We propose an offset-buffering and multi-mode spin-down method to reduce power consumption for streaming data playback. The offset-buffering inspects the user's viewing pattern and performs buffering based on the analysis of viewing pattern. So, it can maintain the status of spindle motor as idle mode for long time. Besides, it can reduce power consumption by spinning down according to offset-buffer size. The experimental result shows that proposed offset-buffering and multi mode spin-down method is about 28.3% and 12.5% lower than the full-Buffering method in terms of the power consumption and spin-down frequency, respectively.

기존의 셋탑박스는 단순히 디지털 방송물 수신하는 기능에 머물렀다. 그러나 지금은 PVR, 데이터 방송을 지원하는 인터렉티브 어플리케이션, 홈네트워킹 하에서 컨텐츠를 다양하게 처리하는 복합적인 멀티미디어 어플리케이션 등이 탑재된 다기능화된 제품들이 출시되고 있다. 본 시스템은 아날로그 TV와 디지털 TV의 기능을 하나로 합친 유럽향 멀티미디어 셋탑박스를 개발하기 위해 함께 구현되어진 Multimedia Contents Application의 구현에 대해 서술하고 있다. 메모리 스틱을 이용하여 데이터 전달을 수행하는 File Explorer와 함께 멀티미디어 기능을 수행하는 Photo 시bum, Media Player, Juke Box 등을 함께 구현하였다. 오디오, 비디오, 이미지를 디코딩 하기 위한 갖가지 코덱들을 자체적으로 개발하여 최적화시켰다. 또한 좀더 사용자가 친숙한 UI를 위하여 다양한 테스트를 거쳐 사용자 편의적인 UI를 구현하였다.

The lowest power mode (passive-standby mode) was proposed for reducing the power consumption of set-top boxes in a standby state when not receiving content. However, low-power set-top boxes equipped with the lowest power mode have been rarely commercialized because of their low-quality user experience. In the lowest power mode, they deactivates almost all of operational modules and processes, and thus require dozens of seconds for activation latency (that is, the latency for activating all modules of the set-top boxes in a standby state). They are not even updated in a standby state because they deactivate their network interfaces in a standby state. This paper proposes an adaptive standby mode scheduling method for improving the user experience of such boxes. Set-top boxes using the proposed method can analyze the activation pattern and find the frequently used time period (that is, when the set-top boxes are frequently activated). They prepare for their activation during this frequently used time period, thereby reducing the activation latency and enabling their update in a standby state.

An IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) technology is the new convergence technology of the telecommunication and broadcasting which provides various bidirectional TV services. To provide these services only to legal subscribers, mutual authentication between set-top box connected with TV set and the smart card owned by a subscriber is needed. In this paper, we propose an attribute-based mutual authentication scheme that only someone who is satisfied with some attributes, such as titles or departments, can access the contents provided by the IPTV service in an organization. We also show that the proposed scheme is secure. Our proposed scheme has a virtue that user can access various services, provided by an organization where he/she belongs to, according to their attributes with only one time registration. As far as we know, this is the first attribute-based authentication scheme which can be applied to any organizations in IPTV environments.

본 논문에서는 PSNR 이 다른 어떤 척도보다도 화질의 평가에 있어서 중요하다는 전제하에 비쥬얼리듬 (VR) 정보를 이용하여 원본영상이 가용하지 않은 일반 시청자들의 STB 재생영상으로부터 PSNR 을 추정하는 방법을 제안하였다. VR 로부터 추정한 PSNR 값이 매 프레임 별로 2 차원 재생영상으로부터 구한 PSNR 과 같지는 않으나 시청자들이 평균적으로 어느 정도의 화질로 시청하고 있는지 비교적 정확하게 모니터링이 가능하다. 제안된 방법은 감소기준법(RR) 영상품질 측정방법으로 사용될 수 있다. STB 은 단순히 재생영상으로부터 VR 정보만 추출해서 서버로 전송하는 역할만 수행하면 되고, 나머지 연산은 품질관리 서버에서 수행하므로 자원이 부족한 STB 의 부담을 경감하면서도 효율적으로 품질을 모니터링할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

The storage manager provides reliability and flexibility for digital broadcast in set-top box.

우리나라는 점차 강화되고 있는 세계적인 연간 소비전력 제한 규제 및 정책에 발맞추어 Standby Korea 2010 정책으로 주요 전자기기의 대기전력을 1W미만으로 낮추는 전략을 추진하고 있다. 최근 아날로그 방송에서 디지털 방송으로 전환되고, IPTV 등이 빠르게 보급됨에 따라 향후 디지털 STB의 수요 및 시장이 크게 성장할 전망이다. 이에 본 논문은 Set-Top Box(STB) 소비전력 저감 효과를 높이기 위해 TV와 STB간 외부기기 연결 시 기존 Auto Power Down(APD)기법 대비 High Definition Multimedia Interface(HDMI) 포트 제어를 통한 제안 기법을 적용하여 연평균 전력 4~12% 저감 할 수 있다.

디지털 방송은 위성 뿐 아니라 케이블을 거쳐 지상파 방송에까지 도입되었다. 디지털 방송 수신에 필요한 필수 장비 중 하나로 STB(Set-top Box)를 들 수 있는데, 현재 상용화 된 STB들은 전 세계의 각 지역마다 다른 방송 표준을 지키기 위해, 또 방송 사업자의 편의와 방송되는 지역의 지형적 특성을 고려하기 위해 저마다 다른 미들웨어를 사용하고 있다. 그러나 이렇게 서로 다른 미들웨어를 사용하면 몇몇 불이익과 비효율성을 가지게 된다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 이를 보다 편리하고 효율적이게 만드는 미들웨어 구조를 제안하고 이를 통해 얻을 수 있는 장/단점에 대해 설명한다. 또한 추후에 후속 연구로 얻어질 수 있는 이점에 대해서도 간단히 생각해 본다.
