  • Increasing demand for realistic media and improvement of transmission and device techniques accelerate ultra-high definition(UHD) service realization. In Korea, the cable TV broadcasting companies are planning to commercialize in Apr. 2014. For the terrestrial TV broadcasting service, technical issues are considered for the specification of UHD broadcasting system. However, the frequency bands and the system bandwidth for the terrestrial UHD broadcasting system have not been decided. In this paper, we propose required spectrum bandwidth for the next-generation terrestrial broadcasting service considering source coding, error correcting codes and modulation techniques. Also, we propose frequency management plan for terrestrial UHD broadcasting system in which we divide all parts of the country into 9 frequency zones and allocate 4 frequency band to each frequency zone considering single frequency network (SFN).

  • The differential global positioning system (DGPS) transmits a GPS enhancement signal using a top-loaded monopole antenna in the medium frequency range. The top-loaded antenna in the medium frequency band can attain a radiation efficiency on the order of 10%. The antenna ground plane characteristics affect the antenna radiation efficiency. To improve the radiation efficiency, it is necessary to install the antenna on a ground plane with large enough physical dimensions and good conductivity. The antenna radiation efficiency is a primary factor in determining the DGPS service area. The service area of the DGPS using a medium frequency band is dominantly affected by the antenna radiation efficiency. To determine antenna radiation efficiencies accurately, the antenna radiation efficiencies of DGPS are deduced from the propagation power in this paper. Based on the deduced antenna radiation efficiencies, the service area for the Korean nationwide-DGPS is analyzed and evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure consumers' recognition of service quality in Korean restaurants, and to compare the differences in perceived service quality according to consumers' general characteristics. Self-administrated questionnaires were completed by 1,494 subjects and data were analysed by frequency, factor, reliability, and subjected to t-test and one-way ANOVA. The major results of this study can be outlined as follows: Factor analysis on perceived service quality resulted in 4 factors: staff service (5 variables), menu quality (4 variables), price and value (4 variables) and atmosphere and convenience (5 variables). Cronbach's alpha values for the reliability were over 0.8 for all the factors. The mean value in the elicited factors was indicated to be in order of menu quality ($4.73{\pm}1.19$), atmosphere and convenience ($4.57{\pm}1.09$), price and value ($4.55{\pm}1.15$), and staff service ($4.46{\pm}1.12$). Also, a significant difference was shown in service quality, which was perceived according to consumers' general characteristics. A higher mean value in perceived service quality was shown in women than in men, in the older than in the younger, in people with a high frequency of visiting Korean restaurants than those who do so with low frequency, and in people with high cost expenditure when visiting than those with low cost expenditure. In terms of region, the mean value in perceived service quality was significantly lower for consumers in the Gwangju region than in other regions.

  • In this paper, we investigate the co-movements of the real GDP cycle and the telecommunications service expenditure cycle over 1980 through 2000 in Korea. We used several appropriate statistical tools to characterize and to compare the co-movements between the two aforementioned variables. The statistics presented in this paper are common, easy to Interpret and capture important visual, descriptive information and the dynamics of data that would be lost if one focused only on the unconditional correlation coefficients of de-trended data. This paper examines four possible characteristics for the co-movements of real GDP and telecommunications service expenditure in Korea. The first is that in low frequency, the cyclical movements in telecommunications service expenditure are very similar to the cyclical movements in real GDP, The second is that in the high frequency, the estimated stationary cyclical telecommunications service expenditure is not closely related to the estimated stationary cyclical real GDP. Third, according to co-spectra analysis, the strong relationships between the variables are found in the mid-term frequency and as such this empirical finding has important implications for telecommunications policy and telecommunications service implementation strategies. Finally, in the short-term period, our empirical results support telecommunications network theories such as path dependence properties, lock-in, positive feedback externality, and network externality.

  • When we assign frequency resources to a new radio service, the existing services need not to be interfered with by the new service. Therefore, when we make a frequency assignment, a guard band is necessary to separate adjacent frequency bands so that both can transmit simultaneously without interfering with each other. In this paper, we propose an efficient frequency guard band decision rule for avoiding interference between radio services. The guard band is established based on the probability of interference in the previously arranged scenario. The interference probability is calculated using the spectrum engineering advanced Monte Carlo(MC) analysis tool(SEAMCAT). After applying the proposed algorithm to set up the frequency guard band, we can decide on the guard band appropriately because the result satisfies the predefined criterion.
