To elucidate the effects of an obesity control program on body composition and serum lipid levels, 31 obese elementary students (male: 25, female: 6) residing in the Gyeonggi area were evaluated and their body composition, serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG (triglyceride) were analyzed. The average age, height, weight and BMI (body mass index) were $11.52{\pm}1.00\;yrs$, $151.96{\pm}8.04\;cm$, $68.21{\pm}9.03\;kg$ and $29.40{\pm}1.79\;kg/m^2$ for the males, respectively, and $11.17{\pm}1.17\;yrs$, $147.83{\pm}5.15\;cm$, $65.05{\pm}10.86\;kg$ and $29.62{\pm}3.24\;kg/m^2$ for the females, respectively. There was a significant decrease in BMI for males (p<0.001) and females (p<0.05). There were also significant changes in all of the biochemical levels evaluated before and after the study. Specifically, the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG level decreased after the obesity control program, while the HDL-cholesterol level increased after the program. These results indicate that obesity control programs do change the BMI, serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG levels in obese elementary students. Thus, obesity control programs are urgently needed to prevent degenerative disease and decrease obesity among children in elementary school.
The lowering effect of cholesterol in Sprague Dawley rats was investigated with panaxydol which was purified from the petroleum ether soluble fraction(PESF) of Korean red ginseng. The level of total cholesterol(TC), Triglyceride(TG) and low density lipoprotein(LOL)-cholesterol in serum was reduced by $48\%,\;47\%\;and\;41\%,$ respectively while high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol was in creased up to $29\%$ as compared with their control values when the panaxydol(20 umoles. 5 mq/kq/day) was adminstered by intraperitoneal rout for 3 consecutive days along with a $1\%$ cholesterol diet. The hepatic ester cholesterol content which was increased in proportion to the cholesterol content of the diet in the control, clearly decreased with panaxydol administration to about $40\%$ regardless of the two diet cholesterol content. $1\%\;or\;2\%.$ A threshold of supression on the serum lipid levels in both administration routes was observed: the maximium suppression in i.p. and p.o. administration was observed to be at 5mq/kq b.w. and in the range of 50 - 100 mg/kg b.w., respectively. Panaxydol may reduce serum lipid and cholesterol levels by inhibiting cholesterol absorption and/or by modulating the cholesterol metabolism. at least in part.
The purpose of this was to analyse zinc intakes and effect of Zn(30mgZnSO4/day) supplementation on plasma zinc level, serum HDL-cholesterol and serum Alkaline Phosphatase (AP) activity of Korean adults. The men consumed 8.52($\pm$2.08)mg of zinc, and the women consumed 6.4($\pm$2.62)mg of zinc. Although protein intakes of subjects were lower than normal values. The first source of zinc was cereal and grain group, the second was meat, fish, egg and soybean group. Two food groups supplied about 80% of zinc. After two weeks of zinc supplementation, the zinc concentration in plasma was significantly increased. The highest plasma zinc level was 78.80ug/dl(men), 76.04ug/dl(women) at 2 weeks after zinc supplementation(p<0.05). Serum DHL-cholesterol was significantly decreased by zinc supplementation. The lowest serum HDL-cholesterol level was 39.29mg/dl(men), 44.84mg/dl(women) at 4 weeks after zinc supplementation(p<0.01). Serum AP activity was significantly increased by zinc supplementation. The highest AP activity was 86.40units/L(man), 67.93units/L(women) at 2 weeks after zinc supplementation(p<0.05). It seems that the supplementation of 30mg ZnSO4/day can be beneficial for improving zinc nutriture. However it can be negative factor on coronary heart disease because serum HDL-cholesterol was significantly decreased(p<0.01)
The purpose of this study was to find an effect of honey on the lipid metabolism of Sprague Dawley rats. All experimental rats were fed ad libitum, for seven weeks, 68% saccharide diet and 10% or 20% honey from acacia, sumac and miscelllaneous flower honey, respectively, and sucrose. The food efficiency ratio of rat taken diet with honey and high fructose of control group was increased in comparison with the control group. The concentration of cholesterol in serum of rats take총 diet with and high fructose of control group was more increased in comparison with the control and normal group. The concentration of H DL-cholesterol in serum of rats taken sumac honey was increased 57.0% in comparison with the control group, but the concentration of VLDL, LDL-cholesterol in serum of rats taken diet 10PA sumac honey was decreased 48.36% in comparison with the control group. The concentration of phospholipid in serum of rats taken diet with 20% acacia or 10% miscellaneous honey was increased 24.7, 16.25%, respectively, in comparison with the control group. The concentration of free fatty acid in serum of rats taken Inlet with sumac or miscellaneous honey and high fructose was increased in comparison with the comparison with the control group. The concentration supplemented diet with acasia honey was increase in comparison with the control group. The concentration of triglyceride in serum of rat was increased by feeding of honey. The concentration of triglyceride in liver was increased, but the level of phospholipid was decreased by feeding of honey.
This study was designed to investigate the optimum recommendation level on Gatrodia rhizoma and the effects on the improvement of the lipids in the dietary hypercholesterterolemic rats. Experimental diets mixed with 5% Dioscorea batatas(Group 2), 10% Dioscorea batatas(Group 3), 15% Dioscorea batatas (Group 4) 5% Gastrodia rhizoma (Group 5), 10% Gastrodia rhizoma (Group 6), and 15% Gastrodia rhizoma (Group 7), were administered to the male rats of the Sprague Dawley for 3 weeks. Concentration of total cholesterol in serum was lower in the Gastrodia rhizoma groups than in the other groups, especially total cholesterol concentration of 10% Gastrodia rhizoma(Group 6) was the lowest in the Gastrodia rhizoma groups. Concentration of HDL-cholesterol in serum was higher in the 10% Gastrodia rhizoma and 15% Gastrodia rhizoma than in the other groups. Concentrations of cholesteryl ester, LDL, LDL-cholesterol in serum were the lowest in the 10% Gastrodia rhizoma. Concentration of glucose and activity of GPT in serum were the lowest in the 10% Gastrodia rhizoma group. The activity of GOT in serum was lower in the 10% Gastrodia rhizoma group and 15% Gastrodia rhizoma group than in the other groups. Therefore, we consider that there are effects on the improvement of the lipids in the Gastrodia rhizoma and the optimum recommendation quantity of Gastrodia rhizoma is 10% to quantity of food composition.
The aim of this study was to analyze an association between milk consumption and serum lipid profiles in postmenopausal women in Korea. The dietary data by the Food Frequency Questionnaire were evaluated among 208 postmenopausal women who did not receive hormone therapy and their serum concentrations of triglyceride (TG), total, HDL-, and LDL-cholesterol, and alkaline phosphatase were analyzed. When the relationship between milk consumption and serum lipid profiles were analysed by linear regression, we found a negative relationship of milk consumption with ALP and a positive relationship with HDL-cholesterol. Animal calcium intake was significantly correlated with ALP and HDL-cholesterol. In addition, the serum level of HDL-cholesterol of the upper quartile (UQ) subjects who took animal calcium over 313 mg/day was significantly higher than the lower quartile (LQ) subjects who consumed milk below 101 mg/day when we compared the UQ and LQ subjects. The HDL-cholesterol level of the UQ subjects who consumed 235 ml of milk tended to be higher than the that of the LQ who consumed 53 ml. As for serum concentrations of TG, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol, there was no significant difference between the UQ and LQ groups of milk consumption. Based on our study, we concluded that continual consumption of approximately one cup of milk per day was associated with low cardiovascular risks with favorable lipid profiles and ALP in postmenopausal women. This study aims to investigate the changes in the lipid composition and angiotensin-converting enzyme activity in serum of rats exposed to microwave radiation, and to examine improving effects of green tea catechin to the lipid composition. The microwave-exposed rats received the normal and one of 3 diets: catechin free (MW-0C), 0.25% catechin (MW-0.25C) or 0.5% catechin (MW-0.5C). Rats were sacrificed 6th day after microwave radiation (2.45 ㎓, 15 min). The concentration of serum triglyceridein MW-0C group was increased by 85%, compared with the normal group, but that of MW-0.25C group with 0.25% catechin supplementation was to 17% lower, compared with the MW-0C group. There was no significant difference between normal group and MW-0.5C group. Total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were increased by 21.4% and 38.6%, respectively, by microwave irradiation. The concentration of HDL-cholesterol in MW-0C group was lower to 29.3%, but it was maintained at the normal level by catechin supplementation. There was no significant difference among four groups in HLD-cholesterol/LDL-cholesterol. Atherogenic index in MW-0C group was increased by 56%, compared with the normal group. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity in lung tissue of MW-0C group was increased by 59 %, while that of MW -0.25C and MW -0.5C group were maintained at the normal level. ACE activity of MW-0C group in serum was increased by 122.8%, compared with the normal group. Catechin supplementation group was significantly reduced, compared with the MW-0C group ACE activity. In conclusion, microwave irradiation increased the serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations and ACE activity which are considered as the blood pressure increasing agents. However, catechin supplementation decreased the level of triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and ACE activity, which maybe consider catechin as being agent of lowering effect for blood lipid profile for athero-genesis.

This study investigated the effect of porphyran drink extracted from Porphyra yezoensis on serum and liver cholesterol contents in hypercholesterolemic rats. We divided rats into 5 diet groups; normal diet, control diet fed high cholesterol diet, $1\%$ porphyran drink diet with control diet $(1\%\;PD),\;2\%$ porphyran drink diet with control diet $(2\%\;PD),\;3\%$ porphyran drink diet with control diet ($3\%$ PD). Food intake was not significantly different among groups, but weight gain was significantly lower in porphyran drink group $(1\%,\;3\%)$ than control group. Liter weight was significantly lower in $3\%$ porphyran drink group than control group. Serum triglyceride and total cholesterol contents were significantly lower in porphyran drink group than control group. Serum HDL-cholesterol contents was elevated as porphyran drink intake level increased. Hepatic triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations were significantly decreased in porphyran drink group compared to control diet. These results suggested that addition of porphyran drink in hypercholesterolemic rats has an effect on the improvement of serum and liver cholesterol.
The effects of soybean extracts on serum lipid contents were evaluated in rats. Ninety-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $100{\pm}10g$ were divided into fourteen groups and fed different fat diets for four weeks. The experimental groups were divided into; control, saturated fat diet, unsaturated fat diet and high fat diet respectively were fed 1% cholesterol group. The serum total lipid were higher in saturated fat diet group than in control group. The contents of total-cholesterol in serum of the saturated fat diet group was significantly higher than other groups. The contents of HDL-cholesterol in serum of the soybean extract group were higher than those other fat diet group. The contents of LDL-cholesterol in serum of the soybean extract group were lower than other fat diet groups. The soybean extract group of lipid was significantly lower in other groups.

This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of Cassia tora ethanol extract on the lipid levels in serum and liver of rats fed high cholesterol diet. Experimental rats were divided into the following 4 groups: normal diet group, high cholesterol diet group, high choleslerol-0.25% C. tora ethanol extract group and high cholesterol-0.5% C. tora ethanol extract group. After 4 weeks, rats were sacrificed and analyzed the serum lipid profiles, activities of serum alanine aminotransferase (AST), aspartate aminotransferase (ALT), hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and malic enzyme (ME). It was also determined the contents of total cholesterol, triglyceride and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in liver. There was no difference in weight gains between experimental groups. The concentrations of serum total cholesterol, free cholesterol, triglyceride and free fatty acid were tended to be decreased in C. tora groups compared with control group. HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly decreased in high cholesterol diet group and slightly increased by C. tora ethanol extract feeding. The contents of liver cholesterol and triglyceride were higher in high cholesterol diet group than normal group, but significantly decreased by feeding of C. tora ethanol extract. Supplementation of 0.5% C. tora extract decreased significantly the activities of hepatic G6PDH and ME. Activities of serum AST, ALT and contents of liver TBARS were tended to be increased with high cholesterol diet and reduced by C. tora ethanol extract supplementation but had not significance. These results suggest that C. tora ethanol extract may exert a lipid lowering effect in serum and liver of rats.
