  • CT images are sequential images that provide medical doctors helpful information for treatment and surgical operation. It is also widely used for the 3D reconstruction of human bone and organs. In the 3D reconstruction, the quality of the reconstructed 3D model heavily depends on the segmentation results. In this paper, we propose an algorithm suitable for the segmentation of teeth and the maxilofacial bone.

  • We present a sequential factorization method using singular value decomposition (SVD) for recovering both the three-dimensional shape of an object and the motion of camera from a sequence of images. We employ paraperpective projection [6] for camera model to handle significant translational motion toward the camera or across the image. The proposed mthod not only quickly gives robust and accurate results, but also provides results at each frame becauseit is a sequential method. These properties make our method practically applicable to real time applications. Considerable research has been devoted to the problem of recovering motion and shape of object from image [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]. Among many different approaches, we adopt a factorization method using SVD because of its robustness and computational efficiency. The factorization method based on batch-type computation, originally proposed by Tomasi and Kanade [1] proposed the feature trajectory information using singular value decomposition (SVD). Morita and Kanade [10] have extenened [1] to asequential type solution. However, Both methods used an orthographic projection and they cannot be applied to image sequences containing significant translational motion toward the camera or across the image. Poleman and Kanade [11] have developed a batch-type factorization method using paraperspective camera model is a sueful technique, the method cannot be employed for real-time applications because it is based on batch-type computation. This work presents a sequential factorization methodusing SVD for paraperspective projection. Initial experimental results show that the performance of our method is almost equivalent to that of [11] although it is sequential.

  • Defect region segmentation of TFT-LCD images is performed by combining defect pixels detected by a defect detection method into defect region, or by using morphological operations to segment defect region. Therefore, the result of segmentation of the defect region is highly dependent on the defect detection result. In this paper, we propose a method which segments defect regions sequentially according to the possibility of being included in defect regions in TFT-LCD images. The proposed method repeats the process of detecting a seed using the median value and the median absolute deviation of the image, and segments the defect region using the seeded region growing method. We confirmed the superiority of the proposed method to segment defect regions using pseudo-images and real TFT-LCD images.

  • This study investigates how affects elicited by visual images in print ads are integrated to form a liking for the ads. Assuming a sequential rather than simultaneous processing of still-cut images, we adopt the 'think-aloud' method to capture consumers' spontaneous responses to visual images. We hypothesize that not only would consumers show mixed affects toward a still-cut visual image but that they would also integrate their serial affects heuristically rather than simply averaging the affects as suggested by the compensatory hypothesis. By comparing the effects of two contradictory affect integration hypotheses (i.e., peak-affect and mood-maintenance) with compensatory integration, using a single regression model, we found that peak-negative along with mood maintenance integration of serial affects for a print ad works best in the formation of ad liking. The results also support our initial premise that people can have mixed valence even toward a still-cut ad.

  • One of the most difficult parameters to measure in the sea is current speed and direction. Recently, efforts are being made to estimate the ocean current vectors by utilizing sequential satellite imageries. In this study, we attempted to estimated sea surface current vector (sscv) by using satellite ocean color imageries of SeaWifs around the Korean Peninsula. This ocean color image data has 1-day sampling interval and spatial resolution of 1x1 km. Maximum cross-correlation method is employed which is aimed to detect similar patterns between sequential images. The estimated current vectors are compared to the surface geostrophic current vectors obtained from altimeter of sea level height data. In utilizing the color imagery data, some limitations and drawbacks exist so that in warm water region where phytoplankton concentration is relatively lower than in cold water region, estimation of sscv is poor and unreliable. On the other hand, two current vector fields agree reasonably well in the Korean South Sea region where high concentration of chlorophyll-a and weak tide is observed. In the future, with ocean color images of shorter sampling interval by COMS satellite, the algorithm and methodology developed in the study would be useful in providing the information for the ocean current around Korean Peninsula.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast small target detection method using multiple filters, and describe system implementation using IPP libraries. To detect small targets in Infra-Red images, it is mandatory that you should apply a filter to eliminate a background and identify the target information. Moreover, by using a suitable algorithm for the environments and characteristics of the target, the filter must remove the background information while maintaining the target information as possible. For this reason, in the proposed method we have detected small targets by applying multi area(spatial) filters in a low luminous environment. In order to apply the multi spatial filters, the computation time can be increased exponentially in case of the sequential operation. To build this algorithm in real-time systems, we have applied IPP library to secure a software optimization and reduce the computation time. As a result of applying real environments, we have confirmed a detection rate more than 90%, also the computation time of the proposed algorithm have been improved about 90% than a typical sequential computation time.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the radial displacement of clinical target volume in the patients with node negative head and neck (H&N) cancer and to quantify the relative positional changes compared to that of normal healthy volunteers. Materials and Methods: Three node-negative H&N cancer patients and five healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. For setup accuracy, neck thermoplastic masks and laser alignment were used in each of the acquired computed tomography (CT) images. Both groups had total three sequential CT images in every two weeks. The lymph node (LN) level of the neck was delineated based on the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) consensus guideline by one physician. We use the second cervical vertebra body as a reference point to match each CT image set. Each of the sequential CT images and delineated neck LN levels were fused with the primary image, then maximal radial displacement was measured at 1.5 cm intervals from skull base (SB) to caudal margin of LN level V, and the volume differences at each node level were quantified. Results: The mean radial displacements were 2.26 (${\pm}1.03$) mm in the control group and 3.05 (${\pm}1.97$) in the H&N cancer patients. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the mean radial displacement (p = 0.03). In addition, the mean radial displacement increased with the distance from SB. As for the mean volume differences, there was no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusion: This study suggests that a more generous radial margin should be applied to the lower part of the neck LN for better clinical target coverage and dose delivery.

  • Conventional methods for measuring winds provide wind velocity observations over limited area and time period. The use of satellite imagery for measuring wind velocity overcomes some of these limitations by providing wide area and near condinuous coverage. And its accurate depiction is essential for operational weather forecasting and for initialization of NWP models. GMS-5 provides full disk images at hourly intervals. At four times each day - 0500, 1100, 1700, 2300 hours UTC-a series of three images is received, separated by thirty minutes, centered at the four times. The current wind system generates winds from sets of 3 infrared(IR) images, separated by an hour, four times a day. It also produces visible(VIS) and water vapor(WV) image-based winds from half-hourly imagery four times a day. The derivation of wind from satellite imagery involves the identification of suitable cloud targets. tracking the targets on sequential images, associating a pressure height with the derived wind vector, and quality control. The aim of this research is to incorporate imagery from other available spectral channels and examine the error characteristics of winds derived from these images.
