  • Hierarchically controlled sequence stratigraphic analysis shows that the Lower Ordovician mixed carbonate-siliciclastic Mungok Formation, Korea consists of three depositional sequences: T1, T2, and T3. Sequence boundaries are generally marked by abrupt transition from coarse-grained shallow-water carbonates to fine-grained deeper-water carbonates mixed with fine-grained siliciclastics, and show indication of subaerial exposure such as karstification. Within this sequence stratigraphic framework, facies characteristics indicate that the Mungok sequences were mostly deposited in subtidal ramp environments. High-frequency cycles consist of upward-shallowing facies successions. Cycles of shallow-water and basinal deposits are not represented well, probably due to cycle amalgamation. Cycle stacking patterns do not show a consistent thickness change that reflects a large-scale sea-level change due to unfilled accommodation space. The Mungok sequences show that many factors including relative sea-level change and topography are involved in controlling sequence development on carbonate ramps. The depositional setting evolved from the high-energy ramps in the sequences T1 and T2 into the low-energy ramp in the sequence T3. Topography is interpreted to have been responsible for the different energy regimes of the carbonate ramps in the Mungok sequences. The high ramp gradient in the sequences T1 and T2 seems to be caused by space-time-dissociated differential sedimentation resulting in spatially narrow distribution of sediment filling, which in turn may be related to high rate of relative sea-level change. In contrast, low ramp gradient was maintained in the sequence T3 during slow changes of relative sea level resulting in broad distribution of sediment filling.

  • It is interesting to locate homogeneous segments within a DNA sequence. Suppose that the DNA sequence has segments within which the observations follow the same residue frequency distribution, and between which observations have different distributions. In this setting, change points correspond to the end points of these segments. This article explores the use of a binary segmentation procedure in detecting the change points in the DNA sequence. The change points are determined using a sequence of nested hypothesis tests of whether a change point exists. At each test, we compare no change-point model with a single change-point model by using the Bayesian information criterion. Thus, the method circumvents the computational complexity one would normally face in problems with an unknown number of change points. We illustrate the procedure by analyzing the genome of the bacteriophage lambda.

  • The magnitude and phase of the compensating voltage in Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) system depend on the voltage sag in the phases affected by the fault and on the influence of the zero sequence components. If the delta connection of the transformer is used, the zero sequence components do not appear on the load side. But nowadays, Y connected transformers with grounded neutral, that is 3-phase 4-wire system, are usually used. Therefore the zero-sequence components are occurred during faults. The zero-sequence components result in the high insulation costs and the asymmetry of the phase and magnitude of the terminal voltages. In this paper 3 phase 4 wire distribution system and 3 phase 3 wire system are analyzed and characteristics of voltage sag are presented. And this paper proposes the method that can mitigate the zero-sequence under the unbalance faults causing voltage sage and phase angle iumps.

  • For the first-order bilinear time series model $X_t = aX_{t-1} + e_i + be_{t-1}X_{t-1}$ where ${e_i}$ is a sequence of independent normal random variables with mean 0 and variance $\sigma^2$, the asymptotic distribution of sample autocarrelation function is obtained and shown to follow a normal distribution. The variance of the asymptotic distribution is of a complicated form and hence a bootstrap estimate of the variance is proposed for large sample inference. This result can be used to distinguish between different bilinear models.

  • In Shewhart control chart, the average run length(ARL) is calculated using the mean of a conventional geometric distribution(CGD) assuming a sequence of identical and independent Bernoulli trials. In this, the success probability of CGB is the probability that any point exceeds the control limits. When the process is in-control state, there is no problem in the above assumption since the probability that any point exceeds the control limits does not change if the in-control state continues. However, if the out-of-control state begins and continues during the process, the probability of exceeding the control limits may take two forms. First, once the out-of-control state begins with exceeding probability p, it continues with the same exceeding probability p. Second, after the out-of-control state begins, the exceeding probabilities may very according to some pattern. In the first case, ARL is the mean of CGD with success probability p as usual. But in the second case, the assumption of a sequence of identical and independent Bernoulli trials is invalid and we can not use the mean of CGD as ARL. This paper concentrate on that point. By adopting one generalized binomial distribution(GBD) model that allows correlated Bernoulli trials, generalized geometric distribution(GGD) is defined and its mean is derived to find an alternative ARL when the process is in out-of-control state and the exceeding probabilities take the second form mentioned in the above. Small-scale simulation is performed to show how an alternative ARL works.

  • This paper presents a fault location algorithm based on the adaptively estimated value of the local sequence source impedance for faults on a parallel transmission line. This algorithm uses only the local voltage and current signals of a faulted circuit. The remote current signals and the zero-sequence current of the healthy adjacent circuit are calculated by using the current distribution factors together with the local terminal currents of the faulted circuit. The current distribution factors consist of local equivalent source impedance and the others such as fault distance, line impedance and remote equivalent source impedance. It means that the values of the current distribution factors can change according to the operation condition of a power system. Consequently, the accuracy of the fault location algorithm is affected by the two values of equivalent source impedances, one is local source impedance and the other is remote source impedance. Nevertheless, only the local equivalent impedance can be estimated in this paper. A series of test results using EMTP simulation data show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is valid for a double-circuit transmission line system where the equivalent source impedance changes continuously.

  • In this paper, an integrated fault section detection and isolation strategy is proposed based on the application of the Distribution Automation System(DAS) utilizing advanced IT and communication technologies. The Feeder Remote Terminal Unit(FRTU) has been widely used to collect data in the Korean distribution system. The achieved data is adopted in this method for detecting multiple fault types. Especially in the case of single phase-to-ground fault, the fault section is detected by comparison of the zero-sequence current phase angle. The test results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method in a radial distribution system through extensive simulations in Matlab/Simulink. Furthermore, a communication-based demo system identical to the simulation model has been developed, and it can be applied as an online monitoring and control program for fault section detection and isolation.

  • Let X$_1$, X$_2$,... be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with continuous cumulative distribution function F(x). X$_j$ is an upper record value of this sequence if X$_j$ > max {X$_1$,X$_2$,...,X$_{j-1}$}. We define u(n)=min{j$\mid$j> u(n-1), X$_j$ > X$_{u(n-1)}$, n $\geq$ 2} with u(1)=1. Then F(x) = 1-x$^{\theta}$, x > 1, ${\theta}$ < -1 if and only if (${\theta}$+1)E[X$_{u(n+1)}$$\mid$X$_{u(m)}$=y] = ${\theta}E[X_{u(n)}$\mid$X_{u(m)}=y], (\theta+1)^2E[X_{u(n+2)}$\mid$X_{u(m)}=y] = \theta^2E[X_{u(n)}$\mid$X_{u(m)}=y], or (\theta+1)^3E[X_{u(n+3)}$\mid$X_{u(m)}=y] = \theta^3E[X_{u(n)}$\mid$X_{u(m)}=y], n $\geq$ M+1$.
