  • Fungi that infect mushrooms and cause diseases are called mycoparasitic fungi. Understanding the diversity of mycoparasitic fungi in wild mushrooms is important for the mushroom industry, as they can parasitize cultivated mushrooms. However, few studies have been conducted on the diversity of mycoparasitic fungi in wild mushrooms in South Korea. Upon surveying mushroom flora, we found a mycoparasitic fungus and analyzed its strain using molecular phylogeny and morphological examination. The strain was identified as Sepedonium laevigatum, which is an unrecorded species in South Korea. In this study, we described the cultural and microscopic characteristics of this strain of fungus.

  • The mycelial growth of Pleurotus ostreatus in compost is strongly stimulated by solid-state fermentation with thermophilic fungi which were isolated from oyster mushroom compost. The biochemical characteristics of these thermophilic fungi were investigated. Cellulase and ligninase activities were not detected by clear zone effect on CMC and lignin media. All of thermophilic fungi grew well with high mycelial density on xylan media and the growing rate of Sepedonium sp. S-2 observed very high. In results of MUF-test, extracellular enzyme activity of Sepedonium sp. S-2, and S-5 measured very high. On the compost after high temperature fermentation with Sepedonium sp. S-2 and S-5, the mycelial growing rate of Pleurotus ostreatus was increased about 50% and it also showed the inhibiting effect on mycelial growth of Trichoderma sp. SJG-51. Isolated thermophilic fungi, Sepedonium sp. S-2 and S-5 were expected as very useful organism for making oyster mushroom compost.

  • Taxonomical studies of soil-borne fungi were performed. Soil samples were collected from greenhouses located in Jinju-City, Korea. Soil dilution plating method was adopted for the pure isolation. Seven ascomycetous fungi were isolated from the soil samples, and subsequently identified. Among them, five isolates, Chaetomium brasiliense, C. indicum, Corynascus sepedonium, Petriella sordida, and Thielavia fragilis have never been reported in Korea. Both teleomorphic and anamorphic states were observed in the two species, Corynascus sepedonium and Petriella sordida, and only teleomorphic state was observed in Thielavia fragilis, Chaetomium indicum, and Chaetomium brasiliense. Illustrated descriptions are presented for the isolates examined in the present study.

  • Some of thermophilic fungi which has growth-promoting effect on Pleurotus ostreatus were isolated from compost during high temperature fermentation process. The temperature optima of 7 isolated thermophilic fungi were $50^{\circ}C$ on PDA media. Isolated strains S-1 and S-2 have the best mycelial growing rate, so these isolates were expected as excellent thermophilic fungi for high temperature composting and mycelial growing of oyster mushroom. In liquid culture, the optimal pH of thermophilic fungi observed variously, pH 7.0-10.0 but most of thermophilic fungi grow well in pH 8.0-pH 9.0 and the final pH of media after cultured was done pH 5.5-6.0. In liquid culture of thermophilic fungi on the optimal condition, S-2 have the best mycelial growing rate. The growing rate of thermophilic fungi S-1, S-2, S-5, and S-10 on lignocellulosic substrates was good but Humicola grisea var. thermoidea, well know thermophilic fungi which has growth-promoting effect on Agaricus bisporus, was poor and which was well grown on PDA at $50^{\circ}C$, pH 7.0. Isolated strain S-1 was identified as Trichophyton sp. and other 6 strains were identified as Sepedonium sp. by morphological characteristics.
