  • The unsteady flow characteristics and the related noise of separated incompressible laminar boundary layer flows (Re$\sub$$\delta$/* = 614, 868, and 1,063) are numerically investigated. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to identify the primary noise source, related with the unsteady motion of the vortex at the reattachment point of the separation bubble. The generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated laminar boundary layer are computed by the method of Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and adverse pressure gradient strength are examined.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics analysis of a high-speed motor-separated spindle system consisted of angular contact ball bearings and built-in motor with oil-jet lubrication. The spindle system is composed of the main spindle and sub-spindle which are mechanically connected by a flexible coupling. The spindles are supported by two front and rear bearings, and the built-in motor is located between the front and rear bearings of the sub-spindle. The thermal analysis model of spindle system is constructed by the finite element method, and the thermal characteristics in the design stage are estimated based on temperature distribution and heat flow under the various testing conditions related to material of bearing ball, spindle speed and coolant temperature.

  • For the analysis of lifting surface at high angle of attack, a Nonlinear Vortex Lattice Method(NLVLM) was used. The NLVLM is intented to compute the interactions between lifting surfaces and separated vertical flow. The lifting surfaces are represented by a lattice of discrete vortex rings. And wakes are represented by families of non-lintersecting, semi-infinite vortex line segments. The image method also used to analyze the ground effect. It is found that vortex lines separated from lifting surfaces represent the separated flows successfully. Although the present method is applied for the rectangular wing and delta wing, extensions can be possible for the arbitrary lifting surfaces. The Present results show good agreement with experimental data.

  • Currently, the only established criteria is on the location of bus stops on principal roads where uninterrupted flow mainly occurs. There are no clear guidelines on any method to locating bus stops considering the characteristics of bus operation and pedestrians. If the location or exterior of a bus stop is inappropriate, road users including bus drivers and pedestrians will be caused serious dangerous and inconvenience. In this study, the research below was performed in order to propose rational criteria for the location of bus stops integrated with or separated from speed-change lanes at signalized intersections considering smooth traffic flow and the characteristics of bus operation and pedestrians as well as traffic safety : First, the appropriate length of each of the near-side and far-side bus stops was calculated by categorizing bus stops to be constructed into those integrated with speed-change lanes and those separated from speed-change lanes. Secondly, the appropriate length of each of the bus stops divided into near-side bus stops and far-side bus stops and integrated with or separated from speed-change lanes was selected by considering the characteristics of pedestrians. Thirdly, whether the construction locations of bus stops were appropriate or not was determined based on the appropriate length of bus stops integrated with or separated from speed-change lanes, which was calculated and selected by considering traffic flow and the characteristics of pedestrians and considering traffic safety. The method for locating bus stops considering traffic flow, the characteristics of pedestrians, and traffic safety will be able to help suggestion criteria of bus stop and the location of safe and pleasant bus stops.

  • A theoretical and numerical investigation on the boundary-layer flow over a two- or three-dimensional hill is presented. The numerical model is based on the finite volume method with boundary-fitted coordinates. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with modified wall function and the low-Reynolds-number model are employed. The hypothesis of Reynolds number independency for the atmospheric boundary-layer flow over aerodynamically rough terrain is confirmed by the numerical simulation. Comparisons of the mean velocity profiles and surface pressure distributions between the numerical predictions and the wind-tunnel experiments on the flow over a hill show good agreement. The linear theory provides generally good prediction of speed-up characteristics for the gentle-sloped hills. The flow separation occurs in the hill slope of 0.5 and the measured reattachment points are compared with the numerical prediction. It is found that the k- $\varepsilon$ turbulence model is reasonably accurate in predicting the attached flow, while the low- Reynolds-number model is more suitable to simulate the separated flows.ows.

  • Many turbulence models have been developed in order to analyze the flow characteristics in an engine cylinder. Watkins introduced k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for in-cylinder flow, and Reynolds modified turbulence dissipation rate by applying rapid transformation theory, Wu suggested k-${\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model in which length scale and time scale are separated to introduce turbulence time scale, and Orszag proposed k-${\varepsilon}$ RNG model. This study applied the models to in-cylinder flow induced by intake valve and piston moving. All models showed similar flow fields during early stage of intake stroke. At the end of compression stroke, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ Watkins, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ Reynolds and ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ RNG predicted well second and third vortex, especially ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ RNG produced new forth vortex near central axis at the lower part of cylinder which was not predicted by the other models.

  • The effect of periodic blowing and suction of upstream flow on the separated shear flow behind the vertical fence was experimentally investigated. The fence was submerged in the turbulent shear flow and DPIV method was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. Periodic blowing and suction flow was precisely generated by the syringe pump. Spanwise nozzle made 2D planar periodic jet flow in front of the fence and the effect of frequency and maximum jet velocity was studied. From the results, the reattachment length can be reduced by 60% of uncontrolled fence case under the control.

The new CW Doppler system usee quadrature detection and phase rotation to Produce simultaneous independent audio and velocity signals for forward and reverse blood flow direction, is fabricated. Specially, this system shows that phase rotation method for flow direction separation provides easy and satisfactory feature. From in vivo blood flow measurement, can easily differentiate typical artery flow from vein flow. and measure both velocity characteristics qualitatively.

  • Decades of studies of geophysical flow have unveiled that the flow downstream of obstacles in stratified flow consists of attached wake and strong internal waves, or separated, fluctuating wake and persistent late wakes. Among unique and interesting characteristics of the stratified flow past obstacles is the generation of coherent vortex the late wake far downstream of the object. Unlike in homogeneous fluid, the flow field downstream self-develops coherent vortex even after diminishing of the near wake, no matter how small the stratification is. This paper present a computational approach to simulate the generation of the coherent vortex structure in late wake of a moving sphere submerged in weakly stratified fluid. The results are in consistent with several experimental observations and the vortex stretching mechanism is employed to explain the process of coherence.

  • One of the devices to prevent separated flow over a wing or a flap at high angle of attack is a vortex generator. In the present work, we numerically study the flow around a low-profile or micro vortex generator whose height is less than local boundary layer thickness which can delay separation with a minimum drag penalty owing to its very small wetted surface area. As a first step toward a parametric study to efficiently design this MVG flow control system, we simulate the flow around a single MVG on a flat plate. For the simulation, we employ OpenFOAM with Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}$-epsilon model. The analysis results are validated by comparing with experimental results of a rectangular MVG at an angle of attack of 10 degrees whose height is 20% of local boundary layer. Important results and aspects of this numerical study are discussed. We also simulate the flow around rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal MVGs and the results are compared
