The gold ore deposits of Nakcheon, Gongyeong and Dongmyeong mine in the Imgye district are E-W trending fissure filling veins emplaced in Precambrian Jungbongsan granite and sedimentary rocks of Cambrian Yangdeog group. The K-Ar age for vein alteration sericite and vein laced muscovite are 73 and 93 Ma, respectively. Vein structure and mineralogy indicate the three distinct depositional stages: I) basemetal sulfides and tin minerals, II) gold-basemeatl sulfides, III) gold-silver-basemetal sulfides. Major gold and silver ore minerals are electrum, native silver, pyrargyrite and argentite. Fluid inclusion data indicate that filling temperatures were from $350^{\circ}C$ to $190^{\circ}C$ through stage I, II and III. Salinities were in the range of 0.0~9.5 NaCl eq.wt.% and do not reveal any systematic trend. Intermittent boiling of ore fluid during stage I is indicated by fluid inclusions in quartz. Fluid pressure during stage I which is estimated from fluid inclusions showing boiling evidence range from 50 to 100 bars. Gold ore deposits of the Imgye district were formed under higher temperatures and lower sulfur fugacities compared with the Eunchi silver ore deposits about 8 Km apart from the Imgye district.
Understanding the frictional properties of rock discontinuities is crucial to ensure the stability of underground structures. In particular, the frictional behavior at depth depends on the complex interaction among mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and chemical characteristics and their coupled effects. In this study, a series of shear tests were carried out in a triaxial compression chamber to investigate the shearing behavior of saw-cut granite surface and rough shear surface of synthetic rocks. The test results were analyzed using Coulomb's shear strength criterion. The frictional behavior of saw-cut granite surface showed little variation at different confining, water pressures and temperature conditions, however in case of synthetic rocks, the frictional behavior showed different trend depending on normal stress level. In addition, the variation of stiffness and dilation at different testing conditions were analyzed, and the stiffness and dilation showed little variation at different water pressures and temperature conditions.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the dispersion pattern of gold during skarnization and genesis of gold mineralization in the Sangdong skarn deposits. The Sangdong scheelite orebodies are embedded in the Cambrian Pungchon Limestone and limestone interbedded in the Myobong Slate of the Cambrian age. The tungsten deposits are classified as the Hangingwall Orebody, the Main Orebody and the Footwall Orebody as their stratigraphic locations. Recently, the Sangdong granite of the Cretaceous age (85 Ma) were found by underground exploratory drillings below the orebodies. In geochemisty, the W, Mo, Bi and F concentrations in the granite are significantly higher than those in the Cretaceous granitoids in southern Korea. Highest gold contents are associated with quartz-hornblende skarn in the Main Orebody and pyroxene-hornblende skarn in the Hangingwall Orebody. Also Au contents are closely related to Bi contents. This could be inferred that Au skarns formed from solutions under reduced environment at a temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. According to the multiple regression analysis, the variation of Au contents in the Main Orebody can be explained (87.5%) by Ag, As, Bi, Sb, Pb, Cu. Judging from the mineralogical, chemical and isotope studies, the genetic model of the deposits can be suggested as follows. The primitive Sangdong magma was enriched in W, Mo, Au, Bi and volatiles (metal-carriers such as $H_2O$, $CO_2$ and F). During the upward movement of hydrothermal ore solution, the temperature was decreased, and W deposits were formed at limestone (in the Myobong Slate and Pungchon Limestone). In addition, meteoric water influx gave rise to the retrogressive alterations and maximum solubility of gold, and consequently higher grade of Au mineralization was deposited.
When rocks are exposed to the near surface environment, they are broken down due to several factors such as physical and chemical weathering during the geologic time. The feldspar and mica, which are the main rock-forming minerals, are easily broken down relative to other minerals. In order to reproduce some weathered minerals similar to the ones exist in natural weathered granite, there was an experimental interaction between fresh minerals and acidic solution. In low pH condition, biotite initially dissolved and its surface structure broke down, whereas plagioclase dissolved and had a needle-shaped dissolved morphology with some precipitates composed of Al element. The minerals were deeply dissolved in a strong acid condition, showing the prominent dissolved structure. Some etch pits and dissolved textures developed on the natural mineral surfaces are similarly found in our experiment, suggesting the development of mineral dissolution and weathering texture by the influence of the mineral's intrinsic nature.
The first step in improving our understanding of uncertainties suclt as rock mass strength parameters and deformation modulus in rock masses around high-level radioactive waste disposal repositories, for improved safety, is to study the process of crack development in intact rock. Therefore, in this study, the fracture process and crack development were examined in samples of KURT granite taken from the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT), based on acoustic emission (AE) and moment tensor analysis. The results show that crack initiation, coalescence, and unstable crack occurred at rock uniaxial compressive strengths of 0.45, 0.73, and 0.84, respectively. In addition, moment tensor analysis indicated that during the early stage of loading, tensile cracks were predominant. With increasing applied stress, the number of shear cracks gradually increased. When the applied stress exceeded the stress level required for crack damage, unstable shear cracks which directly result in failure of the rock were generated along the failure plane.
The Stone Monument of Taejong King in Heonreung Royal Tomb, Seoul was originally erected in 1424 to pay a tribute to Bang Won Lee's achievement who was named Taejong, the Third King of Joseon Dynasty. The monument has been damaged by Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 so that another monument was newly made and erected together with the original monument in 1695. The original monument was made of medium-grained biotite granite for the turtle base and medium-grained milky white crystalline limestone for the stele body and the top stone. The turtle base of the original monument is destroyed beyond the original shape and inscription due to irregular shaped breaking and a set of longitudinal crack. Analyzing the deterioration degree by using nondestructive methods, the 88 percentage of the front area and 38 percentage of the back area of the monument are damaged, and the lower part of the stele body is dominantly deteriorated especially due to the combination of discoloration and physical deterioration. The new monument in 1695 is also made of granite and limestone. The weathering indices of the turtle base and stele body stones by the calculation from ultrasonic velocity are 0.10 and 0.74, respectively. This is because the original monument is presumed to be degraded by heat shock and physical attack during the Japanese war, and the long-term outdoor exposure accelerated the weathering of the monument afterward without protective shelter.
The Imgye hornblendites occur as intrusive sills or dykes within the mylonite zone developed along the contact boundary between Precambrian Jungbongsan granite and Cambrian Jangsan quartzite or Myobong slate formations. The hornlendites belong to the subalkaline and tholeiitic series. In tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams such as $TiO_2-K_2O-P_2O_5$, 2Nb-Zr/4-Y and $TiO_2-10MnO-10P_2O_5$, the hornblendites are classified into continental- and island-arc tholeiites. The hornblendites show fractionated REE patterns with $(La/Yb)_{CN}$ ranging from 3.73-4.56. In incompatible element abundance variations, the hornblendites show distinctive positive and negative anomalies for Rb and Nb, respectively, and unfractionated patterns of immobile incompatible elements such as Y and Yb. The REE patterns of the hornblendites are also similar to those of typical continental back-arc tholeiites and those of the Precambrian Okbang amphibolites in the Socheon-meon, Bonghwa-gun. Accoiding to geochemical characteristics above-mentioned, the hornblendites seem to have been formed from tholeiitic magmas of depleted upper mantle source, contaminated by crustal material en route to continental back-arc basin.
Determination of the chemical properties in some forest soils and the naked soil developed on granite in the mountains of the vicinity of Seoul, Korea are presented in this study. The soil under the broad leaved forests has a higher nutrient indicated by available nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and phosphorus contents, compared with that under the needle leved forests. On the contrary the content of organic matter and base exchange capacity in the needle forest soils is higher than in the broad leaved forest soils. The significant difference between two horizons of each soil appeared only to be in the content of the available phosphorus, and that of the needle and the broad leaved forest soils, and the naked soils was the nitrate nitrogen and organic matter content among the several chemical properties.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of shading degree and rooting media on the growth of Caragana sinica and Sedum middendorffianum after cutting. In C. sinica, the highest rooting rate was obtained in cuttings planted in horticultural soil (Sunshine Mix #1) and peat moss mixture (peat moss : perlite = 1 : 1, v/v) under one layer of 35% shading and in cuttings planted in kanumatsuchi soil mixture (kanumatsuchi soil : decomposition of granite = 1 : 1, v/v) under non-shading. Whereas, regardless of shading degree, most cuttings of S. middendorffianum rooted in both horticultural soil and peat moss mixture. Cuttings of C. sinica showed the highest root length, 10.4cm in kanumatsuchi soil mixture under one layer of 35% shading but the highest fresh and dry weight of roots in kanumatsuchi soil mixture under non-shading. In S. middendorffianum, the highest root length, fresh and dry weight of root were obtained in cuttings planted in horticultural soil under non-shading. With these results, we recommended that cuttings of C. sinica should be propagated in kanumatsuchi soil mixture under non-shading and cuttings of S. middendorffianum in horticultural soil under non-shading.

The vibration-proof material normally used in structural components of precision machinery or measuring instruments requires higher damping in vibration and better characteristics in dimensional stability and rigidity to accomplish the quality assurance of the products. In this study the ferrite-resin material, which is the mixture of epoxy resin and the oxidized steel (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$: ferrite) in consideration of characteristics of aggregator and binder, is developed and investigated as one of vibration-proof materials. Four kinds of composite plates for experiments are made by adding another filler materials such as steel powder, granite powder and carbon-fiber sheet to the basic ferrite-resin matrix. Their characteristics are compared with a cast iron specimen which has the same bending rigidity as other specimens. The ferrite-resin material gives the best damping effect in the motor-induced vibration test. Therefore, the material can be applied to the manufacturing industry for vibration damping of machine elements.
