  • This study was aimed at analyzing the location and the characteristics of the Urban hanok tissues that were formed in the downtown since 1920s. Focusing on the relationship between roads and lots, the developing process and the typological characteristics are examined. Through dividing the large and medium lots of the aristocratic families and on the hilly area near the Seoul City Wall, various shapes of urban hanok tissue were evolved. The urban hanok tissues developed before 1936 locate on the downtown sites, while those developed after 1936 locate on the hilly sites. The location of the tissues were identified in the upper area of Jong-no street. The former is composed of small size lots divided into average area $104.4m^2$ with the narrow alleys of about 2.0m width, while the latter is composed of medium size lots divided into average area $131.54m^2$ with the alleys of about 4.0m width. Moreover the structures of the tissues were evolved based on the developing period and the site condition. Moreover the structures of the tissues were evolved based on the developing period and the site condition. The typological characteristics were defined as the four patterns categorized with the bilateral concepts of alley's form and of alley's spacial feature.

  • The De-militarized Zone(DMZ) on the Korean Peninsula is ecologically conserved and naturally developed as access to the area has been controlled in the past five decades. As a result, biodiversity and wetlands are developed very well, but they have not been sufficiently surveyed due to land mines and security reasons. Focusing on the Kyongui Line area in Paju DMZ, this study aims at examining the status of forested wetlands in detail through an on-site survey and understanding the features of forested wetlands in DMZ. The forested wetlands of Paju Kyongui Line area are inhabited by naturally grown Salix koreensis Andress. and Acer ginnale Maxim. and affected by Sacheon Basin region extensively. As the topography of this region is created of inundated area and gentle ground, it is easily affected by hydrology and irrigation and has ideal conditions as forested wetlands. In addition, forest wetlands in this area were used as agricultural land in the past but now transformed into palustrine forested wetlands after being deserted for long time. However, as construction of roads and railways increasingly blocks water paths, the coverage of Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Amorpha fruticosa L. is on the rise, which indicates that forestedwetlands are gradually becoming inland over time.

  • Temporal and spatical surface runoff by heavy rainfall during 25~28 July, 2011 causing urban flooding at Seoul were analyzed using Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA). L-THIA was calibrated for 1988~1997 and validated for 1998~2007 using monthly observed data at Hangangseoul watershed which covers 90 % of Seoul city. As a results of calibration and validation of L-THIA at Hangangseoul watershed, Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients were 0.99 for calibration and 0.99 for validation. The simulated values were good agreement with observed data and both calibrated and validated levels were "very good" based on calibration criteria. The calibrated curve number (CN) values of residential and other urban area represented 87 % and 93 % of impervious area, respectively, which were maximum percentage of impervious area. As a result of L-THIA application at Seoul city during 25~28 July, 2011, most of rainfall (54 %, 287.49 mm) and surface runoff (65 %, 247.32) were generated at 27 July, 2011 and a significant amount of rainfall and surface runoff were occurred at southeastern Seoul city. As a result of bi-hourly spatial and temporal analysis during 27 July, 2011, surface runoff during 2:00~4:00 and 8:00~10:00 were much higher than those during other times and surface runoff located at Seocho-gu during 6:00~8:00 represented maximum value with maximum rainfall intensity which caused landslide from Umyun mountain.

  • Carbon nanotube -copper composite structures were fabricated using composite plating method and their field emission characteristics were investigated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes synthesized by chemical vapor deposition were used in the present study. It was revealed that turn-on field of the structures was about 3.0 $V/{\mu}m$ at the current density of 0.1 ${\mu}A/cm^2$. We observed relatively uniform emission characteristics as well as stable emission currents. CNT-Cu composite plating method is efficient and it has no intrinsic limit on the plating area. Moreover, it gives strong adhesion between emitters and an electrode. The refore, we expect that CNT-Cu composite plating method can be applied to fabricate electron field emitters for large area FEDs and large area vacuum lighting sources.

  • Dirofilaria immitis parasitizes mainly in the pulmonary arteries and in the heart of dogs and cats. The parasite is also of public health importance, because it often elicits nodules in the pulmonary parenchyma and in the subcutaneous tissues, or sometimes parasitize itself in the eyes of human. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of heartworm infection among 165 dogs on three breeding farms in the vicinity of Seoul, Korea. Of 165 dogs, 83 dogs (50.3%) were infected with the parasite, as revealed by an antigen-detecting test using the peripheral blood. Of these, 23 dogs (20.2%) contained microfilaria using the peripheral blood, which are potential source of transmission to uninfected animals and to humans in the endemic area. None of infected dogs showed any clinical signs associated with the disease. Since the three farms were located in the vicinity of Seoul, the unexpectedly high infection rate could imply that the possibility of exposure of both animals and humans living in the metropolitan Seoul area to the parasite is higher than in the other area of Korea.

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted in an effort to investigate the effect of air pollution on respiratory symptoms. Two groups of female aged more than 20 living in the unpolluted rural area of Taebul (n=159) and urban area of Taegu (n=140) were selected. The ATS-DLD-78 questionnaire was translated into Korean and administered with minor modification. The proportion of smoker was less than 1% in both area. Exposure to smoking and higher educational level were more frequent in Taegu. Age-adjusted prevalence rates of 'chronic cough', 'chronic sputum', 'wheezing', and 'dyspnea' were higher in Taegu than in Taebul. In particular, the prevalence rate of 'chronic sputum' in Taegu was found to be higher, which was statistically significant. Exposure to smoking and education level were not concerned with all respiratory symptom prevalence rates. In conclusion, this study Indicates that an urban factor is related to the rates of respiratory symptoms in Korea.

  • A 66-year-old man visited author's institute complaining of the swelling on the submandibular gland area. Clinically, the exophytic mass penetrated the skin of the submandibular area. On MRI, the lesion occupied the left submandibular space and extended downward, protruding exterior to the subcutaneous fat layer, but the center of the lesion was located on the side of the skin and the growth exterior to the skin was prominent. Demarcation of the lesion and the submandibular gland was unclear. Histopathologically the epithelial nests and keratin production were seen, then the biopsy result was squamous cell carcinoma. The stroma of lesion showed a myxoid characteristic and some ducts showed metaplasia of the ductal cells, which suggested the gland-origin carcinoma. However, lots of keratin production and carcinomatous change of cells continuous to the normal epithelium of the skin, the skin-origin carcinoma invading into the submandibular gland area could not be excluded.

  • On January 1, 2005, the Korean Ministry of Environment put into operation a comprehensive program, so called 'Blue Sky 21' project, for the improvement of air quality in greater Seoul metropolitan area. This program was legally based on the 'Special Act on Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement' for Greater Seoul area, which was established in 2003, and should be updated every 10 years. The principal objective of this program is to improve the air quality in Seoul and surrounding area by 2014 to the levels of air quality in Tokyo and Paris, with particular emphases on reducing the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and $PM_{10}$. Any regulation of the emission of toxic air pollutants in general, and $NO_2$ and $PM_{10}$ in particular, should be based on human exposure levels and consequential health effects. In this article, the contents and feasibility of the special program were critically evaluated with respect to the reduction of health risks. Important issues for improving not only air quality but public health are discussed, and future requirements for the success of the special program are suggested.

  • Wandering behavior is a serious problem among the elderly in nursing homes, yet it has received relatively little study As multi-family houses built before the '80s in South Korea were designed, it did not take account into issues related to parking so that at present parking became a big issue. The Seoul Metropolitan Government tried various ways to sort out the parking problem in multi-family house areas, but inadequate parking and illegal parking are still an ongoing problem. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine current situation on resident parking only and illegal parking centered on a congested area of multi-family houses in Seoul and present the improvement plan of parking problems through case investigation home and abroad. As the result of the survey, it has been identified that the subject area consists of 506 households in total and 186 parking spaces and also, 100 cars in parking space or parking lot in housing space and 143 in illegal parking. Green parking business and open access parking system were suggested as solution plan for parking problem. Thus, it is expected that through green parking business for 6 houses and the parking lot of elementary schools around, the illegal parking problem would be sorted out.
