This study was carried out to investigate the spatial distributions of the macrobenthic communities in the Seomjin River estuary from May, 2015 to May, 2016. The number of species was 163, the mean density was $1,865ind.m^{-2}$, biomass was $204g{\cdot}wet\;m^{-2}$ during this study period. The highest number of species and density appeared among polychaetes whereas the most biomass was contributed by mollusks due to the presence of Corbicula japonica in every season. The study area was divided into 3 regions with similar benthic fauna responding to the gradient of the salinity. Praxillella praetermissa was the dominant species in regions of over 30 psu during all seasons. C. japonica and Hediste diadroma were dominant in the upper regions of the Seomjin River where the salinity was less than 10 psu. Heteromastus filiformis showed the broadest distributional range and dominated in all seasons except for the most upper stream at st. 7. From the result of the Bio-Env analysis, salinity was the most important environmental factor affecting the formation of macrobenthic communities in the study area, and salinity and TOC were the highest contributors to the macrobenthic communities. From the correlation analysis between major dominant species and environmental factors, C. japonica, Prionospio japonica and H. diadroma showed a negative correlation with salinity, while P. praetermissa and Scolectoma longifolia showed a positive correlation. H. filiformis was little affected by salinity but showed a positive correlation with TOC or silt content of sediment.

The distributions of suspended particulate matter (SPM), chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) and particulate biogenic silica (PBSi) along the salinity gradient were investigated in the Seomjin River estuary from March 1999 to April 2001. Sampling sites were set based on the surface salinity during each cruise rather than geographic locations. Concentrations of SPM were less than 20 mg/L, suggesting relatively low input of terrestrial SPM despite large freshwater discharge through Seomiin River, Chlorophyll a peaks occurred at 5$\~$ 15 psu salinity zone (10$\~$20 km from Nan Cho Island) in November 1999, at 15$\~$25 psu (10$\~$20 km) salinity zone in April 2000 and at 1$\~$15 psu salinity zone (15$\~$20 km) in October 2000 (ca. 8$\~$58%\mu$g/L). Concentrations of POC, PON and PBSi were also high at the same zone. Relatively low ratios of POC to chlorophyll a in mid-salinity zone where POM peak occurred suggests high contribution of living phytoplankton to the total POC. On the other hand, relatively high ratios of POC to chlorophyll $\alpha$ in very low salinity zone and the mouth of estuary indicated relatively high portions of detrital POC. Consequently, the low concentrations of SPM in this estuary and the high concentrations of chlorophyll $\alpha$ and the low ratios of POC to chlorophyll $\alpha$ in the mid-salinity zone suggest that production of living phytoplankton is primary factor in controlling distribution of POM along the salinity gradients in the Seomjin River estuary.
The spatial and temporal zooplankton dynamics were examined along ca. 100-km section of the middle to lower Seomjin River (without estuary dam in river mouth) and Youngsan River (with estuary dam in river mouth) systems during study periods (2004. Nov.${\sim}$2006. Aug.) based on a monthly sampling intervals. The spatial variation of zooplankton biomass at both river ecosystems was distinct. There was considerable longitudinal variation in total zooplankton abundance in Youngsan R. stretch. The increase in total zooplankton abundance were observed along the longitudinal stretch toward the estuary dam. In contrast, there were not statistically significant longitudinal differences in total zooplankton abundance in Seomjin R. stretch. In Youngsan R. stretch, average abundance of total zooplankton (average ranges: $199{\sim}817$ Ind. $L^{-1}$ at 3 sampling sites, n=20) were nearly $4{\sim}60$ fold higher than that of Seomjin R. stretch (average ranges: $12{\sim}43$ Ind. $L^{-1}$ at 4 sampling sites, n=20). Relative abundance of rotifers (over 80% of total zooplankton abundance) at the whole sampling sites in Youngsan R. stretch were Much higher than that of the Seomjin R. stretch. The most abundant rotifers were Polyarthra spp., Brachionus spp., Colurella spp., and Keratella spp. at the both river ecosystems. In Seomjin R. stretch, copepods carbon biomass sharply increased toward in river mouth (over 40% of total zooplankton carbon biomass). Average ranges of total zooplankton filtering rates for phytoplankton at both river ecosystems varied from 21.2 to 92.9 mL $L^{-1}\;D^{-1}$ in Youngsan R. stretch and from 2.1 to 2.6 mL $L^{-1}\;D^{-1}$ in Seomjin R. stretch. Considering the zooplankton filtering rates, zooplankton as grazers of phytoplankton in Youngsan R. stretch seemed to play the more important role in planktonic food web than that of the Seomjin R. stretch.
During period of the rainy season of spring tide Aug. 2005, the suspended sediment transport rate from Seomjin River increased ten times as high as neap tide of low river discharge. During ebb tide of high terrestrial input, the grain size of suspended particles of both surface and bottom layer of the water column, showed a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at coarse fraction, which suggests a characteristic development of floc-sized particles of low mean effective density. On the contrary, the particles supplied toward upstream of Seomjin river from Gwangyang Bay during flood tide showed a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at finer fraction, possibly due to the resuspension and the deflocculation associated with the increased shear velocity at near bottom. Break-up of large flocs is also suggested by the increased mean effective density. However, settling velocity was lower during flood tide because of smaller grain size. Thus, net deposition of suspended sediment is expected at within Gwangyang Bay instead of upstream of Seomjin River, even though suspended sediment transport rate at near bottom water was three times higher than that at surface water during flood tide.

The distribution patterns of estuarine copepods were investigated in the Seomjin River estuary of southern Korea after heavy rains in August 2006. Tidal influence extended 16 km from the estuary mouth. Each estuary zone (Oligohaline salinity <5, mesohaline salinity 5~18, polyhaline salinity >18) changed within a range of about 5~6 km between low and high tides. A total of ten species were recorded, of which Pseudodiaptomus koreanus, Sinocalanus tenellus, and Tortanus dextrilobatus were predominant in the oligohaline zone; Acartia ohtsukai and Acartia forticrusa in the mesohaline zone; and A. erythraea, Calanus sinicus, Centropages dorsispinatus, Labidocera rotunda and Paracalanus parvus s. l. in the polyhaline zone. Their density was fastly reduced in the other zones. In particular, the oligohaline species migrated and aggregated into deeper water during ebb tides in order to retain their populations, while the same tendency was weaker for polyhaline species, suggesting that evolutionary traits primarily control population retention behaviors in estuarine environments.

In order to elucidate temporal variations of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended particulate matter (SPM), dissolved inorganic nutrients, and chlorophyll a, we performed 25-hour continuous monitoring in the Seomjin River Estuary in March (dry season) and July (rainy season) 2006. We also investigated spatial variations of marine environmental parameters across a saline gradient. In the Seomjin River Estuary, continuous monitoring results revealed that salinity variations were mainly affected by tidal cycle in the dry season and by river discharge in the rainy season. In the dry season, the spatio-temporal distribution of dissolved inorganic nutrient (nitrate, nitrite, and silicate) concentrations showed a good correlation with tidal cycle. While nutrient concentrations in rainy season showed not much variance in time. There were 6 and 4 times higher dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the rainy season than those in the dry season, respectively. Silicate concentration was 43 times higher in the rainy season than that in the dry season. Chlorophyll a concentration was higher in the dry season than that in the rainy season showing high nutrient concentrations. The results of this study, spatio-temporal variations of marine environmental factors are determined by both tidal cycle and river discharge. It seems that chlorophyll a concentration is related to the river discharge than dissolved inorganic nutrient distribution.

This study proposes a Web GUI system using MGIS-based three-dimensional data models and hydrodynamic model. The study of Web GUI (Graphic User Information) system based on the MGIS (Marine Geographic Information System) is mainly performed on effective methodologies which transform real world data to computing world data. Finally, we design a Seomjin River Estuary Web GUI system integrating above data models. It must adds more ecological information and the various service item for approach more easily in order to user.
An estuary is a water ecosystem with a high abundance of the species diversity, due to a variety of complex physicochemical factors of the area where freshwater and ocean mixed. The identification of Corbicula species in the estuary environments is difficult because of various morphological characteristics. In this study, we provide taxonomic information on Corbicula species with taxonomic difficulties using morphological and genetic analysis. This study was conducted on clams from the Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay, one of the major production area of marsh clam in Korea. As a result, we characterized Cytocrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of the Corbicula. The 636 bp nucleotide sequences of COI have 98% homology among Corbicula species collected from 2 sites of Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay. The phylogenetic analysis with 17 species of Corbicula indicated that most of the species collected from Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay were brackish water clam (Corbicula japonica), and only one Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea). The evolutionary distance between C. japonica and C. fluminea was less than 0.003. Therefore, it was confirmed that C. japonica is phylogenetically closely related to C. fluminea. In 9 species of Cyrenidae, phylogenetic tree was classified into three lineages. These results will be used as an important data for an identification of clam species by providing genetic information for Corbicula species with a morphological diversity.

This study considered a seagrass habitat in order to analyze the characteristics of a marine environment of seagrass located in the Seomjin river estuary, through an analysis of the distribution of the water depth, field observation, and three-dimensional numerical experiments using an EFDC model. The seagrass habitat was usually distributed at D.L(-) 0.5~0.0 m, and was hardly seen in the intertidal zone higher than that range. The distribution of the water temperature was within the range of $7.0{\sim}23.2^{\circ}C$, and the seagrass was demonstrated to have a strong tolerance to changes in the water temperature. In addition, the salinity distribution was found to be 27.2~31.0 psu, with suspended solids of 32.1 mg/L, which were higher than the previous research results (Huh et al., 1998), implying that there may be a reduction in the amount of deposits caused by the suspended solids. As for the sedimentary facies, they were comprised of 62.7% sand, 19.1% silt, and 18.2% clay, indicating that the arenaceous was superior and the sedimentary facies were similar to that of Dadae Bay. According to a numerical experiment, the maximum tidal current was 75 cm/s, while the tidal residual current was 10 cm/s, confirming that it sufficiently adapted to strong tidal currents. The erosion and deposition are predicted to be less than 1.0 cm/year. Thus, it is judged that the resuspension of sediments due to tidal currents and the changes in sedimentary facies are insignificant.
This study conducted to investigate the temporal and spatial variations in the fish community structure in the Seomjin River estuary (ES1~ES3) and Gwangyang Bay (ES4~ES8). Surveys were conducted at eight points between May and September from 2020 to 2021. A total of 5,111 fish were collected, representing 42 families, 68 genera, and 78 species. The dominant species collected during the survey period were Pennahia argentata, with 2,370 individuals and a relative abundance of 46.4%. Also, as a subdominant species, Nuchequula nuchalis, 1643 individuals were caught, accounting for 32.1% relative abundance. According to Bray-Curtis similarities, observations were divided into three groups based on the fish community composition, and they were further categorized into brackish water areas, coastal areas, inner areas, and outer areas. Group 1 mainly consisted of fish inhabiting freshwater and brackish water areas, while group 3 exclusively contained fish living in marine waters. ANOSIM (Analysis of Similarity) analysis revealed a significant difference (ANOSIM R=0.783, p=0.001) between Group 2 and Group 3, and the species contributing to these clusters were P. argentata and Muraenesox cinereus. The study demonstrated spatial changes in the fish community structure from the Seomjin River estuary to the outer coast. The findings highlight the importance of long-term monitoring of major species that exhibit spatial variations, serving as essential foundational data for the conservation and management of economically significant fish species.
