The spatial and temporal zooplankton dynamics were examined along ca. 100-km section of the middle to lower Seomjin River (without estuary dam in river mouth) and Youngsan River (with estuary dam in river mouth) systems during study periods (2004. Nov.${\sim}$2006. Aug.) based on a monthly sampling intervals. The spatial variation of zooplankton biomass at both river ecosystems was distinct. There was considerable longitudinal variation in total zooplankton abundance in Youngsan R. stretch. The increase in total zooplankton abundance were observed along the longitudinal stretch toward the estuary dam. In contrast, there were not statistically significant longitudinal differences in total zooplankton abundance in Seomjin R. stretch. In Youngsan R. stretch, average abundance of total zooplankton (average ranges: $199{\sim}817$ Ind. $L^{-1}$ at 3 sampling sites, n=20) were nearly $4{\sim}60$ fold higher than that of Seomjin R. stretch (average ranges: $12{\sim}43$ Ind. $L^{-1}$ at 4 sampling sites, n=20). Relative abundance of rotifers (over 80% of total zooplankton abundance) at the whole sampling sites in Youngsan R. stretch were Much higher than that of the Seomjin R. stretch. The most abundant rotifers were Polyarthra spp., Brachionus spp., Colurella spp., and Keratella spp. at the both river ecosystems. In Seomjin R. stretch, copepods carbon biomass sharply increased toward in river mouth (over 40% of total zooplankton carbon biomass). Average ranges of total zooplankton filtering rates for phytoplankton at both river ecosystems varied from 21.2 to 92.9 mL $L^{-1}\;D^{-1}$ in Youngsan R. stretch and from 2.1 to 2.6 mL $L^{-1}\;D^{-1}$ in Seomjin R. stretch. Considering the zooplankton filtering rates, zooplankton as grazers of phytoplankton in Youngsan R. stretch seemed to play the more important role in planktonic food web than that of the Seomjin R. stretch.

This study analyzed the management plan of Seomjin River Chimsil Wetland by identifying landscape changes through aerial photographs analysis and concentrations of sedimentation. Geophysical Landscape Change Analysis showed that vegetation accounts for more than half of the total area. The Barren land and water body was somewhere repeatedly increased and decreased and made an irregular form in the study area. The soil was acidic, and no eurtophication was shown, but it was potential to form wetland. In addition, the research area has been terrestrification of sand bar for a long period of time, forming a soil layer. Although the characteristics of river deposits were shown in the study area, the grain size was a particulate matter, and the sorting was 'very poorly sorted'. In some areas of Seomjin River Chimsil Wetland, sand bars were formed, but most areas were undergoing to terrestrification. Therefore, in order to preserve the riverine area and to serve by a bridge between the land ecosystem and the underwater ecosystem, it is very necessary to remove some vegetation, create a proper waterway, and restore the wetland.

This study is aimed to examine the variability of consecutive dry days in South Korea. The country is divided into six basins including Han river, Nakdong river, Geum river. Seomjin Yeongsan river, Eastern Coast area and Island area, and three extreme precipitation indices-related to dry days are analyzed at sixty weather stations. Trends of max number of consecutive dry days were unstable during 1973~2010. Variability range of max number of consecutive dry days trends in Nakdong and Seomjin Yeongsan river was larger than that in Han and Geum river. Recently, the range in Nakdong and Seomjin Yeongsan river was bigger and bigger. Maximum dry spell was observed in autumn and winter in most of riverbasins. Especially, Maximum dry spell in winter was more frequent than in other seasons in Nakdong river. Variability range of persistence dry spells was smaller than that of max number of consecutive dry days. However, the increasing trends of the Geum river and the Seomjin Yeongsan river are statistically significant in recent. In Nakdong river, difference between persistence dry spell average and persistence dry spell median was larger than any other riverbasin. It means that there is strong possibility of occurrence of long term consecutive dry days in Nakdong river.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flow duration characteristics of Nakdong, Seomjin and Geum river due to environmental change. The water level gauging stations of Nakdong, Seomjin and Geum river were selected to analyze the change of flow duration. The construction period of multipurpose dam was considered to analyze flow duration characteristics. As the result of this study, it show that ninety-five day flow, normal flow, low flow and drought flow were increased by multipurpose dam construction at all stations except a Jukpo gauging station. Especially, improved effect of flow duration in downstream part was bigger than that in upstream and midstream part. The coefficients of river regime of Nakdong, Seomjin and Geum river were decreased and also coefficients of flow duration were decreased after the multipurpose dam construction. However decline of coefficient of flow duration was smaller than coefficient of river regime because coefficient of flow duration is less affected by maximum discharge and minimum discharge than coefficient of river regime, It was confirmed that multipurpose dam on upstream and midstream has a useful effect for improving the flow duration characteristics.
The fish fauna was investigated from 2010 and 2013 at main stream and tributaries in the Seomjin River which has no estuary dike. The collected fishes were identified into 37,751 individuals of 107 species of 81 genera belonging to 41 families. Among the collected fishes the primary freshwater fishes were 57 species (Relative Abundance: 53.3%), the secondary fishes were 10 species (RA: 9.3%) and the marine fishes were 40 species (RA: 37.4%). The dominant species was Zacco platypus (RA: 28.7%), and the subdominant species was Zacco koreanus (RA: 15.0%). The endemic species were 21 species (RA: 31.3%). The endangered fishes were Acheilognathus somjinensis (Level I), Lampetra reissneri (Level II) and Microphysogobio koreensis (Level II). The exotic species were Carassius cuvieri, Lepomis macrochirus and Micropterus salmoides. We supposed that Odontobutis interrupta in the Seomjin River is translocated species.
This study was carried out to investigate the spatial distributions of the macrobenthic communities in the Seomjin River estuary from May, 2015 to May, 2016. The number of species was 163, the mean density was $1,865ind.m^{-2}$, biomass was $204g{\cdot}wet\;m^{-2}$ during this study period. The highest number of species and density appeared among polychaetes whereas the most biomass was contributed by mollusks due to the presence of Corbicula japonica in every season. The study area was divided into 3 regions with similar benthic fauna responding to the gradient of the salinity. Praxillella praetermissa was the dominant species in regions of over 30 psu during all seasons. C. japonica and Hediste diadroma were dominant in the upper regions of the Seomjin River where the salinity was less than 10 psu. Heteromastus filiformis showed the broadest distributional range and dominated in all seasons except for the most upper stream at st. 7. From the result of the Bio-Env analysis, salinity was the most important environmental factor affecting the formation of macrobenthic communities in the study area, and salinity and TOC were the highest contributors to the macrobenthic communities. From the correlation analysis between major dominant species and environmental factors, C. japonica, Prionospio japonica and H. diadroma showed a negative correlation with salinity, while P. praetermissa and Scolectoma longifolia showed a positive correlation. H. filiformis was little affected by salinity but showed a positive correlation with TOC or silt content of sediment.
The prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae (CsMc) was examined in freshwater fish from the water systems of Seomjin-gang (River), the Republic of Korea. Total 1,604 fish from 7 local sites of Seomjin-gang were examined by artificial digestion methods. The metacercariae of C. sinensis were detected in 102 (39.8%) out of 256 fish (14 species) from the upper reaches of Seomjin-gang, i.e., Osucheon (22.3% in 6 fish species) in Imsil-gun, and Seomjin-gang (63.9% in 9 fish species) in Sunchang-gun, Jeollabuk-do. Their average density was 9.0 per infected fish. They were also found in 132 (48.0%) out of 275 fish (12 spp.) from the middle reaches of Seomjin-gang, i.e., Songdaecheon (58.9% in 4 fish species) in Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do, and Seomjin-gang (45.2% in 10 fish species) in Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do. Their average density was 21.0 per infected fish. CsMc were detected in 77 (56.6%) out of 136 fish (11 species) from the lower reaches of Seomjin-gang, i.e., Seomjin-gang (73.3% in 11 fish species) in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Namsancheon (8.6% in 1 fish species) in Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. Their average density was 64.9 per infected fish. The metacercariae of Metorchis orientalis were also detected in 6 fish species from 4 sites of Seomjin-gang. Conclusively, it has been confirmed that CsMc are more or less prevalent in fish from some water systems of Seomjin-gang in Korea.
The purpose of the present study is to estimate the ecological instream flow for conservation and restoration of fish habitat in running water ecosystem which has very important status for stream environment. Estimation of the ecological instream flow in the present study was carried out by application of a two-dimensional depth averaged model of river hydrodynamics, River2D model. It can model fish habitat in natural streams and rivers and assess the quality of physical habitat accoriding to the species preferences for habitat suitability. Zacco platypus and Zacco temmincki were selected as target fish species in the study area of the Seomjin river. The Habitat Suitability Criteria (HSC) developed by Sung et al. (2005) were used for target fish species, life stages and habitat conditions in the study. Weighted usable area (WUA) was computed by the River2D model considering preferences of target fish species for velocity, depth, and channel substrate. The result revealed that the ecological instream flow of $10.0m^3/s$ is needed to maintain the target fish habitat at each life stage in the river.
Among the phthalic esters, di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), which are categorized endocrine disrupting chemicals, account toy up to 80% of the world production. Nine phthalic esters were quantitatively determined in water and in sediment samples from Gawngyang Bay and Seomjin River estuary. This might be the first report in contamination of phthalates in the marine environment of Korea. DBP and DEHP were detected with the high concentration and high frequency, while the other phthnlic compounds were below the detection limits. The aveyage concentyations of DBP and DEBP in sediment from Gawngyang Bay were 33.8 ng g$\^$-1/ and 67.4 ng g$\^$-1/ on a dry weight basis, respectively. The concentrations in surface watey from Seomjin River estuary were in the range of 62.7∼333.8 ng L$\^$-1/ for DBP and 25.6 ng L$\^$-/∼116.1 ng L$\^$-1/ for DBHP. In sediments from Seomjin River estuary, DBP ranged 9.1∼149.3 ng g$\^$-1/, and DEHP 46.3∼156.3 ng g$\^$-1/. Phthalic esters concentrations found in Seomjin River estuary were much less than those in other rivers in Korea. Distribution pattern of DBP and DEHP concentrations in Seonliin River estuary indicates that both compounds aye introduced to Gwangyang Bay through run-off.
