The seasonal variation in species composition and abundance distribution of zooplankton was studied in the Seomjin river estuary along the salinity gradients. In this estuary, marine taxa predominated in all seasons and very limited number of freshwater species appeared. The total abundances showed a seasonal fluctuation. The highest total abundance appeared in spring with over 3,000 individuals/m$^3$. In summer, the high abundance was sustained although it decreased a little. The abundance was minimal in fall with about 500 individuals/m$^3$. When the study area was divided into three salinity regimes, oligohaline (salinity less than 5 psu), mesohaline (5${\sim}$18 psu), and polyhaline zone (over 18 psu), the zone of high abundance as well as the composition of zooplankton community in each salinity regime changed seasonally. In fall, marine copepods predominated in oligohaline zone while marine species other than crustaceans dominated in polyhaline zone. However, in winter copepods predominated in all area. In spring and summer, holozoic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans dominated in higher salinity regimes. We listed major copepod species of each salinity regime for each season with the ranges of water temperatures (T) and salinities (S) of their occurrence. T, S's of maximum abundances of those major copepod species were also reported. The observed very wide tolerance ranges of major copepod species for salinity suggested that the concept of 'indicator species' should be used in quantitative context rather than qualitative.
To investigate the changes of dominant species of benthic macroinvertebrates following summer precipitation variance, we surveyed twenty five sites of the main Seomjin River in May and September in 2014 and 2015. The temperature, precipitation, water quality factors and substrate composition, water depth and flow velocity, which are important factors in benthos habitat environment, were collected and measured. There is not much difference of the cumulative precipitation (CP) between 2014 (2,322.1 mm) and 2015 (2,371.0 mm) in May. However CP in september was decreased by more than half in 2015 (3,726.1 mm) than 2014 (7,678.2 mm). Due to washing effect by summer precipitation, total number of species and individuals for benthic macroinvertebrates were higher in May than in September. Chironomidae spp. and Choroterpes altioculus were dominated in May, Ecdyonurus levis, Ecdyonurus kibunensis were dominated in September. As a result of correlation analysis between community indices and environment factors, it was found that there is a significant correlation with flow velocity and substrate compositions. According to the results of cluster analysis and PCA based on environment fators and dominant species of benthic macroinvertebrates in Seomjin River, it was divided into four groups following CP and MT. Ecdyonurus levis and Ecdyonurus kibunensis reflect the effect of the decrease in summer precipitation.

Biomass and species composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton along the salinity gradients in the Seomjin River estuary were investigated in March, July, September and November, 1999. The locations of sampling sites were set based on the surface salinity during each cruise rather than geographic locations. A total of 96 phytoplankton species were identified with 60 diatom species in the study area. The species number of green algae was relatively high in low salinity region while the number of dinoflagellates increased in high salinity areas. Monthly mean of phytoplankton biomass ranged from 183 cells/ml to 833 cells/ml. There was a diatom bloom of Skeletonema costatum in November at the 5-15 psu salinity region and sharp decrease of biomass in very low salinity region occurred in March. During the rainy season in July with the salinity less than 8.1 psu, the green algae dominated in most of the study areas. Chroomonas spp. were highly dominant in March and September and the biomass increased towards the high salinity regions. A total of 83 zooplankton taxa were identified with 72 marine and 11 freshwater taxa. Major group of marine form was copepods with34 taxonomic groups. Most freshwater taxa were aquatic insects. Threshold salinities of freshwater zooplankton appearance were 8.1 psu in July, 4.7 psu in September, and 0.2 psu in November. The number of taxa appeared and abundances of zooplanktons were minimal in the middle of salinity gradients in this estuary.

To improve the practicality of 'Early warning service about agrometeorological weather hazards' and operation efficiency to deliver site-specific about a lot of land unit possibility of weather hazard occurrence with the suitable counterplan to farmer, site-specific early warning service system that was built at the National Academy of Agricultural Science in Korea passed some of the error supplementation and service's stabilization stage during operation period for trial services from October 2014 to March 2015. Field service system covered about 470 volunteered farmer and 950 lots in Seomjin river downstream areas (part of Gwangyang-si, Hadong-gun, Gurye-gun). This system (Two track system) consists of early warning system (a lot of land unit) to inform farmer by individual text message and dispersal prior alert system that can see the jurisdiction's situation of local government. Individual text message about Seomjin river downstream that is our first study area was launched since $2^{nd}$ March 2015, and online site (http://www.agmet.kr) started business since April 2015. Service offers currently information of farm weather, farm weather hazard, nationwide weather risk and special weather alert, also our system will consistently expand the service target area and contents and improve the service quality until 2017 when our study finished. To prevent crops damage that was caused by crisis situation like farm weather and weather damage offer prior alert about agrometeorological weather harzard to volunteered farmer, thereby our study expects to help the reduction of farm's damage caused by weather derivatives.
Population ecology of Cobitis tetralineata was examined at Churyeong Stream, Seomjin River, Korea. C. tetralineata inhabited on the sand bottoms with $10{\sim}20cm/see$ in current velocity, and $30{\sim}150cm$ in water depth. This species was active on the sand during the daylight hours from March to October, but they hibernated in the inside of the sand during the winter season. Sex ratio of female to male was 1:0.57, and female was $20{\sim}30mm$ (TL) larger than male. The age group of C. tetralineata (female) population showed that the $20{\sim}40mm$ group is 0+ years old, the $45{\sim}65mm$ group 1+ years old, the $65{\sim}90mm$ group 2+ years old, and the group longer than 90 mm over 3 years old. Males $13{\sim}14$ months old after hatching had lamina circularis at the base of its pectoral fin as a secondary sexual character. And in its spawning season, lateral color pattern of male was changed as a sexual dimorphism. The spawning season may be from late June to middle July, $22{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ water temperature. The average number of mature eggs in ovary was about $1,288{\pm}583(474{\sim}2,976)$, egg diameter was about $0.98{\pm}0.1mm$. C. tetralineata fed mainly on Chironomidae, Arcellidae, Branchioda and Algae. The feeding rate was the highest in April and September, but they did not fed in the winter.

The present study was carried out to clarify the distribution of rotifera with salinity variation during the period from February 1998 to July 1999. Rotifera consists of 27 genera and 88 species, from the maximum occurrence of 39 species in November, 1998 to the minimum of 21 species March, 1998. With 32 dominant species, Keratella cochlearis cochlearis, K. cochlearis f. tecta, Ascomorpha saltans saltans and Asplanchna (s. str.) priodonta priodonta occurred predominantly. Distribution of Rotifera related to salinity showed that 36 species occurred in the freshwater zone, 3 species in the mixo-oligohaline zone ($0.5{\sim}5.0%_o$) and mixo-mesohaline zone ($5.1{\sim}28.0%_o$) respectively, on the other hand 2 species (Asplanhna (s. str.) priodonta priodonta, Synchaeta oblonga) in all zones. Average abundance by salinity ranged from $1,273\;ind./m^3$ ($25.0{\sim}28.0%_o$ to $16,259\;ind./m^3$ ($15.1{\sim}20.0%_o$. The percentage composition calculated effect by stepwise multiple regression of the pearson correlation coefficient value of environmental factors and Rotifera abundance (station $1{\sim}4$) revealed that it was 74.32% in BOD, 72.15% in COD, 69.77% in conductivity, 65.87% in $Cl^-$ and 58.27% in chlorophyll a. Also, (Station $5{\sim}12$) revealed 9.11% in $Cl^-$, 7.67% in TP and 6.20% in chlorophyll a.

Ultrstructural studies of germ cell differentiation and vitellogenesis in the oocytes of the female Rapana venosa in the brackish water area of Seomjin River were investigated by transmission electron microscope observations. In the early vitellogenic oocytes, the Golgi complex and mitochondria were involved in the formation of glycogen particle, lipid droplets, and yolk granules. In the late vitellogenic oocytes, the rough endoplasmic reticulum and multivesicular bodies were involved in the formation of proteid yolk granules in the cytoplasm. However, heterosynthetic vitellogenesis in this species were not observed in vitellogenic oocytes during oogenesis. A mature yolk granule was composed of three components: crystalline core, electron lucent cortex and the limiting membrane. As shown in some large gastropods, vitellogenesis in R. venosa occurred by way of endogenous autosynthesis without heterosythetic vitellogenesis (exogeneous endocytosis), which are found in the oocytes in bivalves. The mating period and spawning activity were related with the increases of seawater temperatures and salinities.
In order to get geologic information necessary for underground installation of water pipe, seismic refraction profiling was applied to the southwest side of the Seomjin River which flows between Namwon-gun, Cholabuk-do and Gokseong-gun, Cholanam-do. Before obtaining the in-line refraction data, walkaway data were recorded with 1 m geophone interval and -36∼+36 m offset range. From the walkaway data, it is interpreted that a dry soil layer with the average velocity of 585 m/s covers wet sediments with the average velocity of 1,326 m/s. The second layer overlies basements nearly horizontally with the average velocity of 4,218 m/s. Refraction profiling of 220 m long with the geophone interval of 2 m is interpreted with the Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM). Three layers are identified with average velocities of 688 m/s, 1,473 m/s, and 3,776 m/s, respectively. The depth to the bedrock impossible for ripping ranges between two extremes, 1.51∼2.43 m and 2.25∼3.54 m, depending upon thickness of the hidden layer. A typical shortcoming of refraction method, the hidden layer problem, prevents accurate estimation in depth of the second layer.
The 2020 summer extreme flood severely disturbed the riparian ecosystem of the Seomjin River. Some trees were killed by the flood impact, whereas others have recovered through epicormic regeneration after the disturbance. At the same time, several tree individuals newly germinated. This research aimed to explain the recovery of the riparian ecosystem by spatial proximity between each tree individual of different characteristics, such as "dead", "recovered", and "newly germinated". A spatial point pattern analysis based on K and g-functions revealed that the newly germinated trees and the existing trees were distributed in the spatially clumping patterns. However, further detailed analysis revealed that the new trees were statistically less attracted to the recovered trees than the dead trees, implying competitive interactions hidden in the facilitative interactions. Habitat amelioration by the existing trees positively affected the growth of the new trees, while "living" existing trees were competing with the new trees for resources. This research is expected to provide new knowledge in this era of rapid climate change, which likely induces stronger and more frequent natural disturbance than before. Environmental factors have been widely used for ecosystem modeling, but species interactions, represented by the relative spatial distribution of plant individuals, are also valuable factors explaining ecosystem dynamics.
Flood damage is becoming more serious due to the heavy rainfall caused by climate change. Physically based hydrological models have been utilized to predict stream water level variability and provide flood forecasting. Recently, hydrological simulations using machine learning and deep learning algorithms based on nonlinear relationships between hydrological data have been getting attention. In this study, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm is used to predict the water level of the Seomjin River watershed. In addition, Climate Prediction Center morphing method (CMORPH)-based gridded precipitation data is applied as input data for the algorithm to overcome for the limitations of ground data. The water level prediction results of the LSTM algorithm coupling with the CMORPH data showed that the mean CC was 0.98, RMSE was 0.07 m, and NSE was 0.97. It is expected that deep learning and remote data can be used together to overcome for the shortcomings of ground observation data and to obtain reliable prediction results.
