For the purpose of developing capacitive humidity sensor having interdigital electrodes, interdigital electrode was modeled and simulated to obtain capacitance and sensitivity as a function of geometric parameters like the structural gap and thickness. For the development of ASIC, switched capacitor signal processing circuits for capacitive humidity sensor were designed and simulated by Cadence using $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS process parameters. The signal processing circuits are composed of amplifier for voltage gain control, and clock generator for sensor driving and switch control. The characteristics of the fabricated sensors are; 1) sensitivity is 9fF/%R.H., 2) temperature coefficient of offset(TCO) is $0.4%R.H./^{\circ}C$, 3) nonlinearity is 1.2%FS, 4) hysteresis is 1.5%FS in humidity range of $3%R.H.{\sim}98%R.H.$. The response time is 50 seconds in adsorption and 70 seconds in desorption. Fabricated process used in this capacitive humidity sensor having interdigital electrode are just as similar as conventional IC process technology. Therefore this can be easily mass produced with low cost, simple circuit and utilized in many applications for both industrial and environmental measurement and control system, such as monitoring system of environment, automobile, displayer, IC process room, and laboratory etc.
The analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is an important component in various fields of sensor signal processing. This paper presents an expandable flash analog-to-digital converter (E-flash ADC) for sensor signal processing using a comparator, a subtractor, and a multiplexer (MUX). The E-flash ADC was simulated and designed in $0.35-{\mu}m$ standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. For operating the E-flash ADC, input voltage is supplied to the inputs of the comparator and subtractor. When the input voltage is lower than the reference voltage, it is outputted through the MUX in its original form. When it is higher than the reference voltage, the reference voltage is subtracted from the input value and the resulting voltage is outputted through the MUX. Operation of the MUX is determined by the output of the comparator. Further, the output of the comparator is a digital code. The E-flash ADC can be expanded easily.
Flexible tactile sensors can provide valuable feedback to intelligent robots about the environment. This is especially important when the robots, e.g., service robots, are sharing the workspace with human. This paper presents a flexible tactile sensor that was manufactured by direct writing technique, which is one of 3D printing method with multi-walled carbon nano-tubes. The signal processing system consists of two parts: analog circuits to amplify and filter the sensor output and digital signal processing algorithms to reduce undesired noise. Finally, experimental setup is implemented and evaluated to identify the characteristics of the flexible tactile sensor system. This paper showed that this type of sensors can detect the initiation and termination of contacts with appropriate signal processing.
To realize a robot hand interacting like a human hand, there are many tactile sensors sensing normal force, shear force, torque, shape, roughness and temperature. This sensing signal is essential to manipulate object accurately with robot hand. In particular, slip sensors make manipulation more accurate and breakless to object. Up to now several slip sensors were developed and applied to robot hand. Many of them used complicate algorithm and signal processing with vibration data. In this paper, we developed novel principle slip sensor using separation layer. These two layers are moved from each other when slip occur. Developed sensor can sense slip signal by measuring this relative displacement between two layers. Also our principle makes slip signal decoupled from normal force and shear force without other sensors. The sensor was fabricated using the NBR(acrylo-nitrile butadiene rubber) and the Ecoflex as substrate and a paper as dielectric. To verify our sensor, slip experiment and normal force decoupling test were conducted.
The collective of highly reliable traffic data is necessary for traffic signal control. This study is to test application of RTMS sensor to traffic signal control. In order to find out the possibility of its application th traffic signal control, 5 types of experiments were performed. The major findings are as follows ; -The detection are a has been changing according to degree and gain. -At the results of experiments for interference are a measure, Degree 60 is stable condition. -At the results of reliability test for volume and speed. the error rate decreases as speed increases and that of Zone 1 is lower than that of Zone 3. -Two modes are set up for reliability test of traffic volume. It founds that the detection reliability of the stopped vehicles are higher than that of the passing vehicles at sidefire-intersection mode. It founds that the results are vice-versa at sidefire-highway mode. Conclusively, this sensor cannot directly apply to colection of traffic data for traffic signal control. However, this sensor can be substituted for a loop detector which is used popularly for signal control, and freeway traffic control if above faults are made up.
The Air Quality Sensor(AQS), located near the fresh air inlet, serves to reduce the amount of pollution entering the vehicle cabin through the HVAC(heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system by sending a signal to close the fresh air inlet door/ventilation flap when the vehicle enters a high pollution area. One chip sensor module which include above two sensing elements, humidity sensor and bad odor sensor was developed for AQS (air quality sensor) in automobile. With this sensor module, PIC microcontroller was designed with back propagation neural network to reduce detecting error when the motor vehicles pass through the dense fog area. The signal from neural network was modified to control the inlet of automobile and display the result or alarm the situation. One chip microcontroller, Atmega128L (ATmega Ltd., USA) was used. For the control and display. And our developed system can intelligently detect the bad odor when the motor vehicles pass through the polluted air zone such as cattle farm.

The photoplethysmography (PPG) signal measured from a mobile healthcare device contains various motion artifacts occurring from a patient’s movements. Recently, to reject the motion artifacts, the method of using an acceleration sensor was suggested, but such sensors are very expensive. Therefore, this study deals with a novel sensor device to replace the acceleration sensor, and evaluated the performance of the proposed sensor experimentally. In the results of the experiments, it is shown that the proposed sensor device can reconstruct the PPG signal despite the occurrence of motion artifacts, and also that the variation rate in heart rate analysis was 1.22%. According to the experimental results, the proposed method can be applied to design a low-cost device.
This paper presents a new methodology for on-line tool breakage detection by sensor fusion concept of an acoustic-emission (AE) sensor. A built-in piezoelectric force sensor was used to measure cutting force instead of a tool dynamometer to preserve the machine tool dynamics. he sensor was inserted in the tool turret housing of an NC lathe. FEM analysis was carried out to locate the most sensitive position for the sensor. When a tool is broken, the explicit changes of signals' pattern take place. A burst-type AE signal increases abruptly. Followingly, a cutting force drops significantly. Therefore a burst of AE signal is used as a triggering signal to inspect the following cutting force. Significant drop of cutting force is utilized to detect tool breakage. The algorithm was implemented in a DSP board for in-process tool breakage detection. The proposed monitoring system was capable of a good applicable tool breakage detection.
