Multi-type, multi-sensor placement optimization for structural health monitoring of long span bridges

  • The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement.

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance sensor network system is an application system based on ubiquitous sensor network technology. This technique is to avoid accidental close combat, to minimize the consumption of limited military resources and personnel, and to provide battlefield situational awareness information for the unit's future combat missions. In this paper, we have proposed a echelons scale identification scheme based on information obtained from surveillance and reconnaissance sensor network system.

  • As the application fields of sensor nodes are getting diverse these days, it is required to have a way of collecting various data that is suitable for these application fields. In the case that the real-time surveillance over the data is unnecessary, present data collecting methods, which collect and transfer the data directly, can cause a waste of energy and data loss, A new method that store the collected data in a local storage and acquire them by query later on is required for nonreal-time applications. NAND flash has energy efficiency and large capacity so it is suitable for sensor nodes, Sensor nodes support 4-10 KBytes small sized memory and it is hard to build an effective file system since NAND Flash doesn't support overwriting NAND flash. This paper discusses an implementation of NAND Flash file system in sensor node environments. The file system makes long-term data collecting possible by reducing transmission cost. It is expected that this file system will play a central role in sensor network environments as it can be applied to various fields which call for long term data collecting.

  • 1) A method to realize active vibration control using SAC and acceleration type sensor is proposed from the viewpoint of practical application. 2) The use of acceleration type sensor makes it easy to satisfy ASPR condition in applying SAC system and to implement sensor in practical mechanical system. 3) Results were confirmed through numerical simulation of 1 DOF vibration system.

  • This paper deals with monitoring sensor robot control system for the application of wireless sensor network. In order to control the direction and speed of robot via remote sensing environment, low power, low weight sensors with ad-hoc networking between robots' sensors have been used. These wireless sensor network based robot monitoring system can be used for remote observation and detection of robots in the areas such as factories, power plants and other dangerous areas which are difficult for human access.

  • Teach pendant is the most widely used means of robot teaching at present. Despite the difficulties of using the motion command buttons on the teach pendant, it is an economical, robust, and effective device for robot teaching task. This paper presents the development of a force/moment direction sensor named COSMO that can improve the teach pendant based robot teaching. Robot teaching experiment of a six axis commercial robot using the sensor is described where operator holds the sensor with a hand, and move the robot by pushing, pulling, and twisting the sensor in the direction of the desired motion. No prior knowledge of the coordinate system is required. The function of the COSMO sensor is to detect the presence f force and moment along the principal axes of the sensor coordinate system. The transducer used in the sensor is micro-switch, and this intuitive robot teaching can be implemented at a very low cost.

A Coordinated Ciphertext Policy Attribute-based PHR Access Control with User Accountability

  • The personal health record (PHR) system is a promising application that provides precise information and customized services for health care. To flexibly protect sensitive data, attribute-based encryption has been widely applied for PHR access control. However, escrow, exposure and abuse of private keys still hinder its practical application in the PHR system. In this paper, we propose a coordinated ciphertext policy attribute-based access control with user accountability (CCP-ABAC-UA) for the PHR system. Its coordinated mechanism not only effectively prevents the escrow and exposure of private keys but also accurately detects whether key abuse is taking place and identifies the traitor. We claim that CCP-ABAC-UA is a user-side lightweight scheme. Especially for PHR receivers, no bilinear pairing computation is needed to access health records, so the practical mobile PHR system can be realized. By introducing a novel provably secure construction, we prove that it is secure against selectively chosen plaintext attacks. The analysis indicates that CCP-ABAC-UA achieves better performance in terms of security and user-side computational efficiency for a PHR system.

On-the-go Nitrogen Sensing and Fertilizer Control for Site-specific Crop Management

  • In-field site-specific nitrogen (N) management increases crop yield, reduces N application to minimize the risk of nitrate contamination of ground water, and thus reduces farming cost. Real-time N sensing and fertilization is required for efficient N management. An 'on-the-go' site-specific N management system was developed and evaluated for the supplemental N application to com (Zea mays L.). This real-time N sensing and fertilization system monitored and assessed N fertilization needs using a vision-based spectral sensor and controlled the appropriate variable N rate according to N deficiency level estimated from spectral signature of crop canopies. Sensor inputs included ambient illumination, camera parameters, and image histogram of three spectral regions (red, green, and near-infrared). The real-time sensor-based supplemental N treatment improved crop N status and increased yield over most plots. The largest yield increase was achieved in plots with low initial N treatment combined with supplemental variable-rate application. Yield data for plots where N was applied the latest in the season resulted in a reduced impact on supplemental N. For plots with no supplemental N application, yield increased gradually with initial N treatment, but any N application more than 101 kg/ha had minimal impact on yield.

  • NLPCA(Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis) is a novel technique for multivariate data analysis, similar to the well-known method of principal component analysis. NLPCA operates by a feedforward neural network called AANN(Auto Associative Neural Network) which performs the identity mapping. In this work, a sensor fault detection system based on NLPCA is presented. To verify its applicability, simulation study on the data supplied from sensor network is executed.

USN metadata management agent using IoT-based EMRA

  • In this paper, we define EMRA-based USN metadata to describe sensor device, sensor node, and sensor network information at the application level. And the proposed method for effectively storing and retrieving USN metadata based on EMRA uses agent technology. As the sensor metadata proposed in this paper is based on SensorML, interoperability can be maintained in the USN environment, and the metadata management system can be directly utilized for metadata management in USN middleware or applications.
