The characteristics of the single mode fiber hydrogen sensor have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Palladium is adopted as a material for the transducer and a thin Ni film is used for the adhesion between the fiber end and the Pd film. It is shown that sensitivity and response time strongly depend on the thickness of Pd film. The single mode fiber sensor coated with 5 nm thick Ni adhesion layer and 10 nm thick Pd transducer layer showed 0.6 dB change of reflectivity and $3{\sim}5$ sec of response time as it absorbed 4% hydrogen gas.

In order to detect damage in early stages and properly maintaining structures, the structural health monitoring technology is employed. In most cases, active-sensing SHM needs many piezoelectric (PZT) sensors and actuators. Thus, if there is a defect on PZT used for active-sensing SHM, the structural status could be misclassified. This study, for reliable SHM performance, investigated to detect defects of sensors by using the admittance-based sensor diagnostics. This study also introduced an algorithm that can diagnose sensor defects based only on data measured from the sensors in case that information about the changes in adhesive and environmental investigation, this study confirms that the proposed algorithm could be efficiently applied to real-world structures in which a significant temperature variation could take place.

An insole type local shear force measurement system was developed and local shear stresses in the foot were measured during level walking. The shear force transducer based on the magneto-resistive principle, was a rigid 3-layer circular disc. Sensor calibrations with a specially designed calibration device showed that it provided relatively linear sensor outputs. Shear transducers were mounted on the locations of four metatarsal heads and heel in the insole. Sensor outputs were amplified, decorded in the bluetooth transmission part and then transferred to PC. In order to evaluate the developed system, both shear and plantar pressure measurements, synchronized with the three-dimensional motion analysis system, were performed on twelve young healthy male subjects, walking at their comfortable speeds. The maximum peak pressure during gait was 5.00kPa/B.W at the heel. The time when large local shear stresses were acted correlated well with the time of fast COP movements. The anteroposterior shear was dominant near the COP trajectory, but the mediolateral shear was noted away from the COP trajectory. The vector sum of shear stresses revealed a strong correlation with COP movement velocity. The present study will be helpful to select the material and to design of foot orthoses and orthopedic shoes for diabetic neuropathy or Hansen disease.

This paper describes a tomographic imaging technique for evaluating the thickness reduction of a plate-like structure using a noncontact sensor network based on an electromagnetic acoustic transducer that generates shear horizontal plate waves. Because this technique is based on the effect of mode cutoff and time of flight of guided waves caused by a change in thickness, the tomographic image provides information on the presence of defects in the structure. To verify the performance of the method, artificial defects with various thickness reduction ratios were machined in an aluminum plate, and the tomographic imaging results are reported. The results show that the generated tomographic image displays the thickness reductions and can identify their locations. Therefore, the proposed technique has good potential as a tool for health monitoring of the integrity of plate-like structures.
This paper describes a design of transducer for non-invasively detecting pressure radial pulse wave in aterial system and a recording system that for the studing the aterial pulse diagnosis of korean traditional medicine. The mechanism of transducer is composed of sensing mechanism, pressure sensor, conditioning amplifier. The variation of radial pulse pressure in the sensing mechanism is converted to the electric signal by piezo-resistive pressure sensor and it converted to the digital signal after preprocessing via A/D converter. The converted signals inputed to the computer as data files and then it display to the monitor for waveform watching and this datas can be used as the aterial pulse diagnosis data. This system effectively detect non-differential radial pulse wave and we conside that if analizing the recorded radial pulse wave, compared each other, it can be helpful in quantify radial pulse wave diagonosis of the Korean traditional medicine.
Bonded tendons have been used in reactor buildings at some operating nuclear power plants in Korea. Assessing prestress force on these bonded tendons has become an important pending problem in efforts to assure continued operation beyond their design life. The System Identification (SI) technique was thus developed to improve upon the existing indirect assessment technique for bonded tendons. As a first step, this study analyzed the sensitivity of the key parameters to prestress force, and then determined the optimal parameters for the SI technique. A total of six scaled post-tensioned concrete beams with bonded tendons were manufactured. In order to investigate the correlation of the natural frequency and the displacement to prestress force, an impact test, a Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) sine sweep test, and a bending test using an optical fiber sensor and compact displacement transducer were carried out. These tests found that both the natural frequency and the displacement show a good correlation with prestress force and that both parameters are available for the SI technique to predict prestress force. However, displacements by the optical fiber sensor and compact displacement transducer were shown to be more sensitive than the natural frequency to prestress force. Such displacements are more useful than the natural frequency as an input parameter for the SI technique.
An interferometric fiber-optic magnetic field sensor is constructed by bonding a Co-Fe-B metallic glass transducer developed here by the melt-spun method to a single mode fiber arm in the fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer and is tested. The bias field for the peak ac-sensitivity was observed near 0.97 Oe and the minimum detectable magnetic field was 3.9${\times}10^{-5}$ Oe(rms)/${\sqrt{Hz}}$ a 3 kHz. The output of the ac field sensor becomes saturated near the input signal level of 1 Oe(rms). The Co- Fe-B transducer exhibits peak response near 500 Hz.

A piezo-buzzer being used for the purpose of generation of audible frequency, which is a electric-acoustic transducer utilizing the inverse piezoelectric effect. Also it can be used for a pressure sensor according to the piezoelectric effect. But the output of a piezo-buzzer is a differential signal. In this study, we've made a system that can measure a real pressure by integration of output signal. According to our results, it could be found a possibility of application for pressure sensor by measurement of output characteristics when a piezo-buzzer was pressurized and depressurized, and by measuring of an error by means of the drift current of OP-Amp, etc..

Based on the cable-extension transducers, a new technique for two dimensional position measurement is developed in this paper. This new technique includes the use of two such transducers and the planar position is determined through triangulation. This paper also presents uncertainty analysis results for establishing sensor design specifications. An actual prototyped sensor system is built and its accuracy is verified through h\both experiments with coordinate measurement machines and its application to the real-time control of a high load wheeled mobile robot. This new type of position sensor can be easily used in a wide variety of automation applications in industry for two dimensional position measurements with high accuracy over a relatively large range, and it is both cast effective and robust against hostile environments.

For measuring the error motion of ultra-precision spindle, eliminating the geometric errors is a must. Unless it is achieved, geometric errors will be dominant in data. Here, the roundness error and alignment error between spindle and sensor are to be removed. That's because typical error range of such spindle is muchless than geometric one. A capacitive transducer of cylidricalshape was developed, which takes full advantage of the spatial-averaging effect by using large area compared tpo the geometric error. This idea was first proposed by Chapman and here it is modified for better performance with nomical gap of 50 .mu. m and with newly designed guards which encompass the respective sensor to rectify the electrical field distribution in good shape. The measurement system is made to get the orbit of Ultra-Precision Air Spindle which is supposed to have its runout under 1 .mu. m. The Calibration data of this sensor is presented and the spindle orbit from 2000rpm to 5500rpm is showed. It is quite reasonable to use this sensor in the range of 60 .mu. m with an accuracy of several tens of nm.
