Safety and security are the topmost priority in every environment. With the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI), many objects are becoming more intelligent, conscious, and curious of their surroundings. The recent scientific breakthroughs in autonomous vehicular designs and development; powered by AI, network of sensors and the rapid increase of Internet of Things (IoTs) could be utilized in maintaining safety and security in our environments. AI based on deep learning architectures and models, such as Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), is being applied worldwide in the automotive design fields like computer vision, natural language processing, sensor fusion, object recognition and autonomous driving projects. These features are well known for their identification, detective and tracking abilities. With the embedment of sensors, cameras, GPS, RADAR, LIDAR, and on-board computers in many of these autonomous vehicles being developed, these vehicles can properly map their positions and proximity to everything around them. In this paper, we explored in detail several ways in which these enormous features embedded in these autonomous vehicles, such as the network of sensors fusion, computer vision and natural image processing, natural language processing, and activity aware capabilities of these automobiles, could be tapped and utilized in safeguarding our lives and environment.
This paper implements a simultaneous solar and thermal energy harvesting system, as a hybrid energy harvesting (HEH) system, to convert ambient light into electrical energy through photovoltaic (PV) cells and heat absorbed in the body of PV cells. Indeed, a solar panel equipped with serially connected thermoelectric generators not only converts the incoming light into electricity but also takes advantage of heat emanating from the light. In a conventional HEH system, the diode block is used to provide the path for the input source with the highest value. In this scheme, at each time, only one source can be handled to generate its output, while other sources are blocked. To handle this challenge of combining resources in HEH systems, this paper proposes a method for collecting all incoming energies and conveying its summation to the load via the current mirror cells in an approach similar to the maximum power point tracking. This technique is implemented using off-the-shelf components. The measurement results show that the proposed method is a realistic approach for supplying electrical energy to wireless sensor nodes and low-power electronics.
The integration of bioelectronic devices with the skin is a promising strategy for personalized healthcare monitoring and diagnostics. On-skin bioelectrodes hold great potential for the real-time tracking of physiological parameters. However, persistent challenges of stability and reliability have instigated exploration beyond conventional noble metals. This study focuses on the ionic passivation and oxidation dynamics of copper-based on-skin thin-film bioelectrodes. Through parylene chemical vapor deposition, we harness a controlled thin film of parylene insulation to counter the intrinsic susceptibility of copper to oxidation in the ionic environment. The results represent the relationship among the parylene insulation thickness, copper oxidation, and electrode impedance over temporal intervals. Comparative analyses indicate that the short-term stability of the copper electrode is comparable to that of the gold electrode. Therefore, we propose a cost-effective strategy for fabricating copper-based on-skin bioelectrodes by introducing enhanced ionic stability within a discernible operational timeframe. This study enriches our understanding of on-skin bioelectronics and affordable material choices for practical use in wearable healthcare devices.
The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) has developed a test module that can vertically ascend and descend with a buoyancy engine to verify the performance of the developed buoyancy engine. The independent test module has been tested in the Ocean Engineering Basin(C.M.Lee et al., 2023). After that, more tests were performed in the Deep Ocean Engineering Basin and at sea. In the 50-meter depth pit test of the Deep Ocean Engineering Basin, there were no problems with the ascent and descent operations, but the buoyancy engine was not properly maintained due to various problems in the independent test module, resulting in a difference between the calculated results using the solution of the equations of motion and the actual measurement results. The East Sea test was conducted at a depth of approximately 110 meters north-east of Pohang, with a dive to 100 meters. The difference between the pressure sensor value and the calculated value was observed, but after checking the results of the underwater position tracking device(USBL, Ultra Short Base Line system), it was estimated that the difference was caused by the influence of the current.
