This paper proposes an X-MAC/BEB protocol that runs a binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm on top of an X-MAC protocol to save more energy by reducing collision, especially in densely populated wireless sensor networks (WSNs). X-MAC, a lightweight asynchronous duty cycle medium access control (MAC) protocol, was introduced for spending less energy than its predecessor, B-MAC. One of X-MAC 's conspicuous technique is a mechanism to allow senders to promptly send their data when their receivers wake up. X-MAC, however, has no mechanism to deal with sudden traffic fluctuations that often occur whenever closely located nodes simultaneously diffuse their sense data. To precisely evaluate the impact of the BEB algorithm on X-MAC, this paper builds an analytical model of X-MAC/BEB that integrates the BEB model with the X-MAC model. The analytical and simulation results confirmed that X-MAC/BEB outperformed X-MAC in terms of throughput, delay, and energy consumption, especially in congested WSNs.

A sensor networkis composed of a large number of sensor nodes, which are densely deployed either inside the phenomenon or very close to it. One of the most important constraints on sensor nodes is the low power consumption requirement. Sensor nodes carry limited, generally irreplaceable, power sources. Therefore, while traditional networks aim to achieve high quality of service (QoS) provisions, sensor network protocols must focus primarily on power conservation. This paper presents the characteristics of energy consuming, average delay in 802.11 MAC, S-MAC that is specifically designed for wireless sensor networks. We analyze the energy consuming state in the 802.11 MAC in the simulation topology nodes, and measure average delay in 802.11 and S-MAC. Energy efficiency is the primary goal in this protocol design. 802.11 MAC is more efficient than S-MAC in the average delay, throughput. However S-MAC is an energy efficient protocol, a tradeoff between energy efficiency and delay.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive time division multiple access based medium access control (MAC) protocol, called bitmap-assisted shortest job first based MAC (BS-MAC), for hierarchical wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The main contribution of BS-MAC is that: (a) It uses small size time slots. (b) The number of those time slots is more than the number of member nodes. (c) Shortest job first (SJF) algorithm to schedule time slots. (d) Short node address (1 byte) to identify members nodes. First two contributions of BS-MAC handle adaptive traffic loads of all members in an efficient manner. The SJF algorithm reduces node's job completion time and to minimize the average packet delay of nodes. The short node address reduces the control overhead and makes the proposed scheme an energy efficient. The simulation results verify that the proposed BS-MAC transmits more data with less delay and energy consumption compared to the existing MAC protocols.

In this paper, we proposed an efficient TDMA scheduling algorithm for a clustered Wireless Sensor Network. Since some previous algorithms used unnecessary idle period and schedule period in each frame. It became an overhead that might consume unexpected energy and delay data transmission. To solve this problem, a dynamic scheduling algorithm according to the number of member nodes and node traffic load within a cluster was suggested. Our proposed DS-MAC(Dynamic Scheduling MAC) could save energy and reduce transmission delay Then DS-MAC was analyzed mathematically to compare with the previous algorithms.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), both efficient energy management and Quality of Service (QoS) are important issues for some applications. For creating robust networks, real-time services are usually employed to satisfy the QoS requirements. In this paper, we proposed a hierarchical real-time MAC (medium access control) protocol for (m,k)-firm constraint in wireless sensor networks shortly called HRTS-MAC. The proposed HRTS-MAC protocol is based on a dynamic priority assignment by (m,k)-firm constraint. In a tree structure topology, the scheduling algorithm assigns uniform transmitting opportunities to each node. The paper also provides experimental results and comparison of the proposed protocol with E_DBP scheduling algorithm.

This paper presents an energy efficient MAC protocol for delay-sensitive data transmission over wireless sensor network. In general, energy consumption and delay depend on Channel Monitoring Interval and data sensing period at each sensor node. Based on this fact, we propose a new preamble structure to effectively advertise Channel Monitoring Interval and avoid the overhearing problem. In order to pursue an effective tradeoff between energy consumption and delay, we also develop a Channel Monitoring Interval determining algorithm that searches for a sub-optimal solution with a low computational complexity. Finally, experimental results are provided to compare the proposed MAC protocol with existing sensor MAC protocols.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) often employ asynchronous MAC scheduling, which allows each sensor node to wake up independently without synchronizing with its neighbor nodes. However, this asynchronous scheduling may not deal with collisions due to hidden terminals effectively. Although most of the existing asynchronous protocols exploit a random back-off technique to resolve collisions, the random back-off cannot secure a receiver from potentially repetitive collisions and may lead to a substantial increase in the packet latency. In this paper, we propose a new collision resolution algorithm called Transient Coordinator (TC) for asynchronous WSN MAC protocols. TC resolves a collision on demand by ordering senders' transmissions when a receiver detects a collision. To coordinate the transmission sequence both the receiver and the collided senders perform handshaking to collect the information and to derive a collision-free transmission sequence, which enables each sender to exclusively access the channel. According to the simulation results, our scheme can improve the average per-node throughput by up to 19.4% while it also reduces unnecessary energy consumption due to repetitive collisions by as much as 91.1% compared to the conventional asynchronous MAC protocols. This demonstrates that TC is more efficient in terms of performance, resource utilization, and energy compared to the random back-off scheme in dealing with collisions for asynchronous WSN MAC scheduling.

In this paper, we present a QoS-aware MAC protocol (QA-MAC) for cluster based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). QA-MAC is a TDMA-based scheduling protocol that minimizes the energy consumption in multi-hop WSNs and provides Quality of Service (QoS). A dynamic scheduling algorithm according to the number of member nodes, node traffics, and traffic priorities is suggested. The selected cluster head allocates time slots for all member nodes in the first TDMA schedule period of each round. During the second schedule period in each round, the cluster head makes a schedule for all data transmission. The proposed QA-MAC (QoS-Aware MAC) could save energy, reduce transmission delay, and support QoS.

Wireless Sensor Networks are widely applied for organizing real-time monitoring systems. Unlike general kinds of sensor networks, it is important to preferential send emergency data to the control server when urgent events are occurred. But IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol which is generally deployed for wireless sensor network does not support algorithm for urgency data handling. Therefore, we proposed a MAC protocol which consider the priority for the urgency data handling.

In this paper we suggest a scheduling algorithm that transmits periodic traffics efficiently in tree-structured wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The related research[l] showed the problems such as increasing the energy consumption and decreasing the data throughput as the depth of tree increases. To solve these problems. we use idle time slots and avoid the redundancy at data transmission. Also we suggest the algorithm that transmits the control packet when it is similar to a previously measured data. And if emergency data is occurred, our proposed algorithm transits that data in EDP(Emergency Data Period) for reducing the wait time. The proposed algorithm shows more data throughput and less energy consumption than that of the related research.
