  • With a development of nanotechonlogy, the concept of environmental technology has been changed from end-of-pipe to green or clean technology. Nanoscience or nanotechnology involves studying and working with matter on a nano-scale. In this article, we introduced the necessity for the development of environmental sensing/monitoring technologies with nanotechnologies for the clean technology.

  • Lane departure avoidance system is one of the key technologies for the future active-safety passenger cars. The lane departure avoidance system is composed of two subsystems; lane sensing algorithm and active-steering controller. In this paper, the road image is obtained by vision sensor and the lane parameters are estimated using image processing and Kalman Filter technique. The active-steering controller is designed to prevent the lane departure. The developed active-steering controller can be realized by steer-by-wire actuator. The lane-sensing algorithm and active-steering controller are implemented into the steering HILS(Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) and their performance is evaluated with a human driver in the loop.

  • Although sustainable development of a city should in theory be based on updated spatial information like land cover/use changes, in practice there are no effective tools to get such information. However the development of satellite and sensor technologies has increased the supply of high resolution satellite data, allowing cost-effective, multi-temporal monitoring. Especially KOMPSAT-1(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) acquired a large number of images of the whole Korean peninsula and covering some large cities a number of times. In this study land-use patterns and trends of Daejeon from the year 2000 to the year 2003 will be considered using land use maps which are generated by manual interpretation of multi-temporal KOMPSAT EOC imagery and to show the possibility of using high resolution satellite remote sensing data for urban analysis.

  • One of the main cases of the desertification impact is the negative contribution of human activities that worsen environment. There are historical facts of inability and excessive activities which destroyed the civilizations. The basic difference is only in the tempo and scales of civilization collapse. Human pressure was accumulated within the centuries and millennia due to the extremely active economic activities. But today it covers only the decades. Presently the process of desertification has a global scale. There are huge factors of Earth aridization as an increase of the quantity of C02 and atmospheric dust and bloom. This process related not only to the arid areas. Obviously a comprehensive approach of development of territories, particularly arid areas is very important. The use of the satellite information and technologies of remote sensing data processing can take a significant place for decision-makers for calculation and estimation of the environment impacts.

Extraction of Some Transportation Reference Planning Indices using High-Resolution Remotely Sensed Imagery

  • Recently, spatial information technologies using remotely sensed imagery and functionality of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) have been widely utilized to various types of transportation-related applications. In this study, extraction programs of some practical indices, to be effectively used in transportation reference planning problem, were designed and implemented as prototyped extensions in GIS development environment: traffic flow estimation (TFL/TFB), urban rural index (URI), and accessibility index (AI). In TFL/TFB, user can obtain quantitative results on traffic flow estimation at link/block using high-resolution satellite imagery. Whereas, URI extension provides urban-rural characteristics related to road system, being considered one of important factors in transportation planning. Lastly, AI extension helps to obtain accessibility index between nodes of road segments and surrounding district areas touched or intersected with the road network system, and it also provides useful information for transportation planning problems. This approach is regarded as one of RS-T (Remote Sensing in Transportation), and it is expected to expand as new application of remotely sensed imagery.

  • With the recent development of intelligence and automation technologies for construction machinery, the demand for safety and efficiency of road-cutting operations has continued to increase. In response to this, a double-blade road cutter has been developed that can automatically cut roads. However, a double-blade road cutter has a load difference between the two blades due to the ground and wear conditions of the cutting blades. The difference in load between the two blades distorts the direction of travel of the cutter. In this study, a vision sensor-based driving guide technology was developed to correct the driving path of road cutters. In addition, we developed a load-sensing technology that detects blade loads in real-time and controls driving speed in the event of overload.

  • Wireless communication, including mobile networks and local area networks, has become an essential service in the society. Wireless communication is evolving to include sensing services, as demonstrated by the increasing attention in organizations and standards such as 3GPP and IEEE 802.11. This survey presents technology trends in the integration of sensing and communication. The standardization status along with use cases provided by standards are explained. In addition, core and supporting technologies such as channel modeling, waveform design, and artificial intelligence are analyzed.

  • Recently, deep learning has become more important in remote sensing data processing. Huge amounts of data for artificial intelligence (AI) has been designed and built to develop new technologies for remote sensing, and AI models have been learned by the AI training dataset. Artificial intelligence models have developed rapidly, and model accuracy is increasing accordingly. However, there are variations in the model accuracy depending on the person who trains the AI model. Eventually, experts who can train AI models well are required more and more. Moreover, the deep learning technique enables us to automate methods for remote sensing applications. Methods having the performance of less than about 60% in the past are now over 90% and entering about 100%. In this special issue, thirteen papers on how deep learning techniques are used for remote sensing applications will be introduced.

  • Microprecision agriculture for a fully controlled plant factory is proposed in this paper. Microprecision agriculture can be attained by using plant factories to realize profitable alternative agriculture. A closed, fully controlled, plant-growing factory is far better in terms of minimizing all sorts of waste. The limit and optimum design concept has to be applied to establish an economically feasible, fully controlled, plant-growing factory. To achieve this objective, microprecision technologies have to be developed. Microprecision technologies should be involved in sensing, modeling, controlling, and collecting information for the mechatronics for plant production. Basic technologies for microprecision are already available; they are SPA (speaking plant approach to environmental control), AI (artificial intelligence: expert systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, photosynthetic algorithms etc.), bioinstrumentation, non-invasive measurement, biomechatronics, and biorobotics. A microprecision irrigation system for plug production is an example of a microprecision technology that has actually been implemented in a plug seedling production factory.

GML-Style Traffic And Tracking Services Based On Web GIS System

  • According as IT environment changes from client/server system to the open system based on web service technologies, the exchange of data and services between independent applications and service servers in web environment is observed Recently. In this points, it is necessary that Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Imagery Information Systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems based on the location and geometry information are inter-related each other. But, the inter-relation of these systems is very difficult because of the closed system architecture, different information format, and the absence of interoperability technologies. In this Paper, we describe 4S integration system based web service technologies that accept the international standard as WFS, WCS, WRS of OGC (OpenGIS Consortium) and UDDI, SOAP, WSDL of W3C. In detail, we study the system architecture design and implementation of traffic information service, routing service, and tracing service. These services are consisting of the data schema based on XML and GML, various functions of each layered service, each server platform, and web server. Specially, we represent that GML is being applied to a wide range of location-based services, telematics, and intelligent transportation
